  1. I've had 2 bargain Clod buster purchases, and 3 TXT-1s, but this was quite a number of years ago now and I paid 'market' rate for the TXT-1's. If I was looking to buy something to restore now it would probably be a Hotshot II with a tidy bodyshell, as the mechanics can mostly be covered with re-re parts from re-re Hotshot.

  3. Never had any issues with mine running on the standard torque tuned motor (Even on 3S LiPo). The first 3 things that occur to me as possibilities are : 1. Eating through the stock pinion (Aluminium ?) has damaged the spur gear teeth 2. Incorrect pinion mesh has caused damage to the pinion and the spur gear. 3. Are you running the gearbox with roller bearings or the stock bushes. If you've been using 'hot' motors without replacing the stock bushes, it's possible you've worn down the bushes and that's causing slop / friction in the spur gear. For what it's worth, I would take it apart and inspect carefully before buying anything. If there's been metal paste or bits of plastic gear teeth flying around inside there might all sorts of damage.
  4. I had no problems with the second method. Never tried the first. In my Tiger I and Jagdpanther, all the control was using a 4 channel system through the MFU. Can't remember exactly how, but no more than 4 channels were needed for the whole thing.
  5. I used 180 M3x8 socket cap screws just to hold on the wheels on the War Rig.............
  6. I generally always tap holes when the instructions indicate putting machine screws into plastic (Such as the screws holding in the hotshot mechanism box). Cutting threads makes it a doddle putting the screws in (I remember struggling not to round off the heads on the machine bolts on my OG hotshot when putting the mechanism box retaining screws in) and you can easily feel when they go tight. Another reason to reduce pressure on the plastic part you're threading into. Putting a machine screw into a non threaded hole puts a lot of outward pressure on the plastic. Hence why most second hand OG hotshot series cars have splits around the ball joints on the front steering uprights. Cutting a thread in the holes relieves the pressure on the plastic. That's my 2 cents

After putting a 1/8 brushless system in my TXT-1, I tried it on 4 cell LiPo once and it was way too much power, it drives 'grandad style' on 2S, and is lively but controllable on 3S I have to confess I'm one of the 'more power' brigade, I've left my hi lift stock as I didn't want to damage the shell, but otherwise I find tamiyas a bit underwhelming stock from the box. I am considering taking the 4000KV brushless system out of my Hotshot and putting a stock motor in it, just for nostalgia's sake, as that was what I had in the Hotshot I had back in '86 when I was a kid.

I'm in the process of building a cab for it, but my cancer has got bad now and it's impeding my capability to use my metalworking machines, so progress is grindingly slow on it, but I do hope to get it finished. A friend is going to help with 3D printing some components for it so that I can fit a bonnet on it as well.

  12. This is not an opinion, it's a fact. We're going the same way that model engineering did as a hobby. Give it another ten years and the hearing aid stands will be appearing next to the Tamiya stand at the Nuremburg toy fair....
  13. You could perhaps think about using pieces of polycarbonate to make dust covers to keep debris out of the battery compartment.

I've just taken the wheels off a lot of mine, or if there's a lot of wheels or bolts to remove (The War Rig wheels are connected to the hubs with 10 bolts each, so 60 bolts to remove the wheels) I've got the vehicle sat on things to raise the wheels off the ground. I've had a set of lunch box tires fail in the exactly the same way as yours have, I think it might be an age thing as mine were over 10 years old.
  15. The few 550s I've had are industrial motors rather than 'RC' motors, and the only noticeable difference was that they had an internal fan to help with cooling so that you could run them on 12V rather than 6V (As a silver can is basically a 6V motor)
  16. Good point, well made, but, I did once melt down some chinese tubs in a baked bean tin to make some round bar I could use in the lathe, but it turned out to be quite crumbly and had a lot of voids in it, so I had to abandon it.
  17. OK, I've dug my virtual foxhole so here's mine I never liked the Sand Scorcher or the Ford Ranger. I've just never had an affinity for anything with a beetle shell, and the Ford Ranger seems pointless without a 4wd drive train. But on the positive I do like the rough rider, just never enough to actually buy one. It's sometimes a bit annoying listening to opinions about RTR vehicles, and 'What's the point if you don't build it yourself' etc. My first RC was effectively a RTR, a Sand Rover my Dad built for me. That got me into the hobby and now years later I have built several scratch built models from scrap metal ranging from a tank with scale thickness armour, a 4x4x4 lunch box with leaf springs and solid axles, a 4x4 'County' style tractor, a forestry Skidder with power steering powered by a 540 motor (That's just the steering, the main drivetrain has a massive low KV brushless), a half track, a 6x6 with a 3 speed gearbox and walking beams, and lastly a War Rig. I got to the point that I can do this because I started off with what was effectively an RTR Tamiya. I've got Tamiya to thank for that. I'm sure kit builders wouldn't like it if I voiced the opinion of 'But you've just assembled that from a load of pre-made parts. You've not actually made anything, you've just assembled it, come back when you've actually manufactured at least half of it yourself'. You never know when that 6 year with an RTR might be inspired to go on to start his own RC manufacturing company later in life. Wouldn't it be ironic if Elon Musk's first electric car had been a Nikko RTR........ Disclaimer: The above gripe is made tongue in cheek. I genuinely don't want to put anyone's back up, just trying to point out that there's usually a different perspective the conversation can be looked at from, and I'm certainly not trying to say I'm a better model builder / assembler just because I make scratch built vehicles. I've seen cars on here built and finished to a standard that I couldn't achieve. Yes, I'm ok at building drive trains, but my painting of bodyshells sucks. If a professional engineer took any of my builds apart and scrutinised them, there would a lot of comments along the lines of 'You call this manufacturing, most of your tolerances are only within +-0.04mm, there's plenty that are out by +-0.1mm, and don't get me started on the number of holes drilled in the wrong place or the lines that should be parallel but aren't.'
  18. Closest think to those tires I can think of in the tamiya stable is the fast attack vehicle front tires, but they are smaller than 70mm diameter. Only other option that is relatively thin are the 1/14 truck tires with off road tread that come from the newer trucks
  19. Dusted off the War Rig for the first time since before Covid. Just running it up and down the drive for 10 mins so my son could film it. Had forgotten how overpowered and heavy it is. Actually managed to make the tires squeal on the tractor unit when I braked hard. I did remember how scary it is to drive at speed. It has 4 throttle settings, 'All ahead slow' (Tickle the throttle), 'All ahead 1/3' (Little bit more throttle but easily driveable), All ahead standard (About 50% throttle, still driveable but getting plenty fast enough (About10mph)), and 'Self destruct'. Once I get to 50% throttle, I seem unable to resist the urge to go straight to full throttle.............. So after 10 mins of mostly careful driving, my lad turns off the camera and about 20 seconds later, you've guessed it, I rolled it and crashed into my driveway wall. Actually managed to bend the 25mm square steel box section holding the front plough/blade on and took a lump about 3/4inch in diameter out of the concrete block it hit. Broke off 2 skulls attached to the blade. Broke off two of the oval ribs running round the outside of the main trailer and loosened one side of the top walkway. Fuel pod got the worst of it with the whole flame thrower mounting broken off along with 3 of the supporting braces, and I managed bend to the the steel tow hook. Think I'm going to repair and retire it now, before I really smash it up.
  20. My thought process goes along like this 1. Have I owned a kit before. If yes and I sold it, why did I sell it. Did I regret selling it. If I didn't then I'm not buying another one. 2. Do I really want it. It normally takes months for me to make a purchasing decision weighing up whether or not I will get value for money from it. For instance, I really liked the Optima Turbo, never owned a belt drive car before and I really liked the Ultima's I had back in the day, but in the end I didn't buy one as I knew I would just build it and hardly ever run it. 3. Can I buy it in the UK ? I'm done with the stress of wondering if something I've ordered from half way around the world from EBay is going to turn up, and if it does are customs are going to gouge me on the import duty. If I buy in the UK (Usually from Modelsport or Fusion Hobbies) I get the model in a couple of days and I'm supporting UK model shops to stay afloat so they'll be there in the future.
  21. Go to the main tamiyaclub site page. Login using your email and password (The login / register button at the top right) At the top right of the window will be your ID with a click down arrow Click on the down arrow A drop down menu will appear. Select Add Model. Add some pictures of a model Once that process is completed, go back to your ID in the top right and click on it again Select 'Showroom'. It should have one model in it with the previously added pictures. You can then repeat the process to add as many models as you like.

  23. No, lathe is in the garage, I was referring to the lathe bed.....
  24. I've quite often lost small parts when parting them off on the lathe. They ping off and disappear under the bed, then when I check the drip tray - nothing. Sometimes it's faster to just make another rather than spend time looking for it.
  25. Check out the huge CRTs and 5.25inch floppy drives in the computers. How technology has moved on..............
