I've posted pics of the gearbox on rc10talk, and this is what I've gotten so far: Q A few of us on another forum have been trying to id this kyosho gearbox. I thought the answer might be found here. One theory is it's an incorrectly assembled Ultima gearbox... Any ideas? A1 I'm guessing incorrectly assembled. Although I'm only using an Optima gearbox as comparison (and going from memory), it looks like some screws would not be going into the proper screw-holes. It looks like the large motor side-plate is on the wrong side. I'd venture that the gearbox should be bolted onto the other side of that side-plate. Don't quote me on that, though. A2 it looks to me like someone tried to assemble the gearbox in a mirror fashion, either to run it in a 'front drive' scenario, or with a mid motor configuration. the motor plate looks reversible, and those standoffs look like they might be hand made.

I tried to edit my post before you posted about that... i just noticed that too. You`re way too fast! I am very curious now!

Good eye. I think that's the case. Here's some pics I took for my blog during a tear down of my Turbo Optima. Notice the access hole on top of the gear box... on my gear box, the flat part of the hole is on the motor mount side. On your gearbox, the flat pat is away from the mount. Unless another car used this gearbox in a mid motor configuration(?), I think it's an Optima gearbox. Good find either way. (CLICKY)
  4. I've got 2.2 Proline Gladiators on mine. Traction is awesome on pretty much any surface. Plus they are very durable. I have had little-to-no wear on mine so far, and that's with motors like 5.5t, and 6900kv.
  5. Sorry, I forgot about this too. I've just now realized you mentioned that the shims are an aftermarket thing. I very much doubt the one I have sitting at home has the ball bearings added to it. I'll try and take a peek tonight.
  6. Which shims? The 6mm shims? I bought a very abused Gallop a few months ago. (you can check it out here, and here) I can see if it has any shims on it when I get home tonight, but I wouldn't be surprised if they are missing. I'll measure 'em if it has 'em. BTW, I'd love to see some pics of your Gallop!
  7. Looks like KYOSHO. Looks a lot like the RB5's diff gear.
  8. My first RC car around 26 years ago was the Academy Galaxy Buggy. It was a direct Grasshopper clone. You can see one in this showroom here: Right now, I have a couple of Academy SBV2's at home:
  9. Very nice Ultima. That one's next on my vintage list.
  10. I've got one of these in a beat up Kyosho Gallop. Not sure how many winds it is though.
  11. Here are 2 of my racers... M04 on the left, M05 on the right: Although I usually run an Alfa body on my M05 when I race it. (that's why the Abarth is in such good shape )
  12. It's definitely a tough little car. I picked one up (Rising Storm) a year and a half ago for very cheap. ($40 I think) Drove it only a few times outside with a 19 turn motor, and once even raced it indoors at 'FastCats' carpet offroad track. It's great for bashing, (maybe even casual use at the track) but the lack of a slipper and poor selection of gear ratios makes it a less than ideal candidate for racing. Having said that, I have recently been thinking of rebuilding it, getting it up and running again. Just need some shocks, and a new body set and wing mount.
