I can forsee the TXT-1 vs Clodbuster debate already, but to prevent the usual banter..
I'm thinking about a Dual Hunter - can still be bought in UK new for under £150 with the 540 motors and esc.
I'd hope this is a good partner to my three 4WD buggies (Manta Ray, Hotshot and Rising Storm) and my 2WD Blitzer Beetle; none of which have much in the way of ground clearance !
I've no intention of rock crawling anytime soon , so can rule a crawler out straight away (although i love the looks of the green CC-01 Unimog)
Will the Dual Hunter be sufficiently different to the buggies ?? - i'd like something a bit more 'unstable' with more ground clearance, but nothing as unstable as a Pumpkin or LB.
Are there many aftermarket hop-ups for a bit of bling later if I/son want to mod it a touch - dampers, suspension arms, alternative bodies ?
And here's the crunch question...
.. a Clodbuster is £50 more, and i'm not sure i want something of the bulk of the Clod, but is it worth it for general bashing ??
I'm looking for a new build, i've done enough resto's recently.

that being said i think it's a better option then a holiday buggy for a beginner.
not sure what US pricing is like but int he UK its the same price as the Durga.
-
good call, didn't know you would buy direct, handy to know.
after Doug asked about the colour scheme of that boomer yesterday i predicted the next question might be the wheels lol!
Must admit i quite like those but i've bought the seben racing star spoke chrome wheels recently and they look OK on my Hotshot rebuild, good enough until i chrome the yellowed original rims anyway..

Probably just mould release agents, which will wear off in time, or if its shelf queen will just evaporate off without whitening.
You could wash the tyres in a mild detergent to remove the residues.

Made by 3racing in hong kong
maybe cheaper (after shipping) to get them from 3racing http://os.3racing.hk/products_list.php?sty...y=44&page=3

Had a pop with a few trial strips last night in near boiling water - 1mm sheet softened up within 5 seconds, bent it round a metal rod and 5 seconds later is set solid.
I tried this with 1mm clear high impact styrene sheet - now there must be something different about this to the other plastruct white sheet i have cos my plastic magic glue wont stick it together. I'm wondering whether its actually polycarb, despite the labelling on the bag i took it from in the shop, and the shop's price labels. Think i'll stick to the white stuff for now - i know thats bonds very quickly and well with plastic magic.
Good to hear it is mouldable too - i wondered how it would perform stretched in multiple directions.

Resurrecting this thread from last week to ask what's peoples experience with the Dual Hunter, twin detonator, wild dagger series.
I've three 4wd buggies in the stable, plus a 2WD Blitzer Beetle, so am thinking a twin motor truggy might be suffiicently different ?
I know the Clod is only £50-60 more, and its indestructible, but its a bit too much 'truck' for me.
-
I hope UK pricing is the same as the far east, but i know thats a dream.
On a serious note i hope they concentrate more on new kits than re-res this year.

Make sure when you install it you space the pinion correctly on the motor shaft - outside face of opinion should be 15mm from the fabric/cardboard motor plate, and you need to use the most clockwise set of holes for the motor mounting screws for the 17T pinion for the correct gear meshing.
-
Just a quick note, I have just ordered 12 of these pinions from modelsport, and the teeth are not as wide as tamiya pinions, so do not use the full width of the teeth on the spur gear to transmit the power. If you're planning on putting silly power through it you might end up chewing slots in your spur gear.
thanks for the heads up - will make sure i get what coverage i can.

I too bought a rising storm for my boy for Xmas. It's quite a good low cost 4wd but has it's limitations, the main one being ground clearance. It's also not the best design for keeping dirt out, I spent half as long cleaning it after a run on a damp football field as I did building it, debris gets in under the shell and through the base of the chassis.
With 8" potholes in the lane youre going to have to be very careful with any buggy, hit those at speed and something is likely to break, go through or probably more likely IN one full of water a few times and you endanger the electrics.
You can still buy the Dark Impact Buggy on the DF03 chassis, £130 + ESC at Wonderland, or the Keen Hawk (£144 +ESC) but to be honest if you are keeping it standard then other than a metal propshaft, and ball diffs, there isn't that much difference to the Rising Storm, and the slightly wider track of the DF03 just loads up the wishbones etc more on impacts. Perhaps a few bags of gravel would be a cheaper investment than a load of Tamiya spares !
I don't know how they compare in action but a truggy design, such as the 2WD Stadium Blitzer http://www.fusionhobbies.com/Tamiya-Stadiu...r-p/ta58482.htm , where the body shell looks more encapsulating and the wheels are well clear of the body may fair better in terms of dirt ingress, but any hit on a pothole edge will break, bend or snap wishbones, steering arms. The dual Hunter (4wd, twin motor) truggy style could also be worth a look, bigger tyres, more ground clearance http://www.wonderlandmodels.com/products/t...110-dualhunter/ . Perhaps not quite as darty in the handling responses as a buggy but on a country lane should be quite capable.
Good luck.

another thread asking a question i was going to ask - glad i'm not the only one!
i'm going to be making a rear wing for my porsche and i haven't used styrene before - i want to make something half decent on a budget too. Where did you get the sheeting from?
Both my local model shops had it although today's was a lot more bewildering visit as they had almost all the plastruct products; sheets, rods, tubes, square channel section, box sections etc. I'm starting with 1mm sheet and I found a nice square channel section which I'll use at the edge to increase the contact area to the end plates of the wing

Better get off to ebay then stokie1

I've used schumacher silicon damper oil in all my Tamiya buggy rebuilds - its rated 55 or 60 spec (can't remeber exactly and it seems to suit my recreational ground bashing just fine. Its difficult to compare spec on damper oil, but theSchumacher stuff is £3 a bottle and a bottle should do 3 sets of shocks.
Be careful with ebay - somethimes its more expensive than Tamiya suppliers like modelsport or tamiyaparts !
-
Ill let you know how it goes.
Dan
I hope you do, i'm watching your trials with much interest.
BTW - i just bought an EZRun brushless ESC, 4300kV motror and program card for £41 delivered, or less than a Tamiya dirt tuned and new ESC was going to cost me !
-
As per my other 'HELP!' thread, i'm going to try to fabricate a wing for my Hotshot. I have a new uncut bodyset so i can easily (LOL!) recreate a Hotshot wing for the second body, but fancy something a bit different, or even totally custom !
Just wondering if there is any resource, anywhere , which shows general diemsions for rear wings of other buggy models ?
Thanks
-
Inspired by Skottoman's 911 work, i thought i'd have a bash with styrene, since i need a rear wing for a second Hotshot body
At the weekend i bought quite thick sheet on the basis it would be easier to join, but in hindsight its too heavy, and so i picked up a couple of 1mm sheets today which seem far better to cut etc.
What i really need to know is the best way to curve the sheet ?
- i've read online to clamp the sheet to a dowel or other cylindrical object of the correct curvature, immerse in near boiling water and then remove, allow to cool, and then unclamp.
- i've seen mention of hot air to soften the sheet but is a hairdrier hot enough or do i need something like a paint stripper gun ?
Any general help much appreciated.

Just to clear that up, it is supplied by ANSMANN racing (Anderson is something else), and it is not a buy-out or anything like that, Ansmann simply repackage RW pinions to sell through the model trade (much as Schumacher do).
RW may be able to supply direct, no harm in contacting them.
Thanks - i editted my post before i saw your correction - my bad !
No luck in the LHS, so have ordered the 'Ansmann' branded one from Modelsport , didn't exactly break the bank at £2.98 !
-
Assuming its Tamiya paint , land it ooks about right but you can never tell with digital cameras and PC screens, then it should be paint code PS-23 Tamiya Gun Metal Polycarbonate Spray... http://www.modelsport.co.uk/index.php?product_id=1940
Be careful because Tamiya also do an acrylic TS spray in Light Gun Metal, paint code TS-42
-
I use these pinions in my M03 and after 3 years, (2years running brushless) , show no wear.
http://www.rwracing.co.uk/rw/rwracing.html
I got mine from Modelsport.co.uk, but they only appear to have the gear you want in a 5mm shaft.
Maybe you can find another stockist or contact them direct.
Many Thanks
I just found a blitzer beetle thread with the same discussion - appears i need the RW3200-13 pinion, but Modelsport no longer supply this in the UK, although they do list a ARW3200-13 against Ansmann Racing, so maybe there's been some merger/buy-out/distribution talks ?!
TA-Mark also suggested the Traxxas TRX-3943 Part, which looks to be the same spec and is available from wheelspinmodels in the UK (fits E Revo, E MAXX and Sash 4x4 models)
I'll check my LHS at lunchtime as they do a fait bit of Traxxas stuff - failing that i'll order either the Anderson or Traxxas item online.
Cheers.

Having decided to go brushless for the Hotshot rebuild (EZRun 4300kV) I now need a 13T pinion to adjust gearing accrodingly.
I was about to press the buy button on the Tamiya Hop-UP 5315001, only to realise it was an aluminium pinion.
Could someone point me in the right direction for a steel pinion, maker and part number if possible.
I think it needs to be 0.8 Module or 32dp (although don't know what these really are to be honest), and 1/8" (3.17mm) shaft diameter.
Thanks

Whether £450 - 500 is value for money all depends on your own perspective, but given we are now at 29 pages on this thread, you can bet Tamiya won;t have too much difficulty selling whatever number they want to sell (controlling supply to demand no doubt).
Like any hobby you can spend a little or a lot - i baulked at spending £800 on a camera lens, but plenty of people will happily spend £5000 or more on one. Photography is maybe a little different, as plenty of people sell ont heir images to fund their habit.

Just look at the members rides section on the main tamiyaclub site
Re-re Hotshot gallery http://www.tamiyaclub.com/userridescat.asp?id=796&cat=2
Boomerang gallery http://www.tamiyaclub.com/userrides.asp?id=966 The yellow on in the newly built section looks nice, complements the damper cases well.
-
Had the same dilemna with my Hotshot, which isn't all that different in body style.
Suggest you have a look through the gallery shots for the boomerang and hotshot 58047 / 58391, and see what you like and dislike - i liked gunmetal, and this would have worked OK with the Hotshot (red dampers etc), but in the end i thought it might be a bit dark with all the black plastic and opted for boxart red for one mould and i'll be doing another racing green with union jack flag decals.
I'm not a huge fan of white TBH, but if you wanted to stay near boxart then perhaps a pearlescent white might be subtley different ?

Fascinating read, and an excellent insight for those contemplating a bit of club action. Battery issues aside at least you're in one piece !
Vapextech stick packs are quite good value, and go up to 5000mAh - i get 30 minutes run time on grass in a 4wd buggy with 540 motor, and not much less in one with a Ansmann clash 23T
