Lunchbox is still pretty cheap and will give you sufficient speed for it's higher chassis, or a midnight pumpkin. Rather unstable compared to a buggy but that's half the fun !

hi mate
pm sent,i also need your address again fella.sorry for the delay in posting the shell,i have been on nights all week but i have finished them now so will get into the post sat or monday, hope this is ok
No problem, I've sent you pm with my address for the shell again.
-
Ok Mike, having spent probably £170 on my hotshot I shouldn't ask , but ifyou want to sell PM me a price and I'll consider taking it off you!
-
I mainly drive lean, 2WD buggies. What's your experience?[/i]
Bashing on a damp football pitch and neighbouring tarmac/gravel area i get over 30 minutes from a fully ball raced 4WD Manta Ray which has smaller wheels than the hotshot and is only equipped with a 23T Clash motor - thats from the Vapextech 5000mAh battery pack.
I'd hope the increased efficeincy of the brushless syetm will cancel out the wheel size effect, but then the motor takes more power. 20 minute run time , requiring extra concentration !, will be more than enough for me.
I'll go armed with a few extra packs - trouble is my son will not be impressed by his new Rising Storm being trounced lol!!. He's none too happy about the Manta Ray, with its £7 motor , leaving him behind !!

I have - woohoo !!!
ebay Item number: 290487264128
Lets hope postal service is quick, albeit doubt they'll process my order til Monday now. I ordered 2 bearings from dinball around Xmas time and they came through in under 3 weeks, so i have my fingers crossed for this combo !
48.96 Euros , somewhere around £41 so can't complain (cheaper than the LRP V10 17x2 motor and mtroniks RV-12 ESC i was tempted by !)
-
I read all 13 pages of the thread linked to earlier in the thread and found one reference to the Hotshot which said the 9t 4300kV was too much for the front monoshock suspension (i know its a weak point anyway but i want to retain original looks). Found a few references to Manta Rays, one of which blitzed its gearbox but everyone uses and abuses differently i guess

I'm tempted to go safe and just buy a Modelsport uk sniper RV-12 ESC (£22) and a LRP V10 spec 5 19x2 motor (£24), but badword thats as much as the EZRun system - my trouble is i don't like waiting for stuff - 3 weeks from HK would kill me !!
-
I've charged my vapextech 5000 stick packs 3 times so far and they seem to get to 4850ish. Maybe they will improve with more use but I'm not concerned by a supposed 3% undercharge.

35A, is that continuous or burst?
I am sure your battery is better than some of the 3000MaH cells I use with mine. Never had issues. Some people get stuttering, but if you turn the punch settings down, then its fine. The punch is at max by default.
I'm assuming thats continuous as a EZRun 3300kv system i found on ebay quotes 35A continuous , 190A burst.
Thena gain the 4300kV combos on ebay still use a 35A esc, so i guess i'm worrying about nothing !
Good to hear you have no issues with NiMH. I'd be turning the punch down anyway to protect the gearbox internals - i don't fancy dismantling the hotshot drivetrain too many times !
-
£40 will get you the entry level EZRun 4300 ESC and Motor. Well worth it. I jumped from a Superstock RZ to it and the speed improvement was impressive and I don't think I lost any run time either.
Thanks for that - looks like i'd possibly have issues with battery power ? My Vapextech NiMH are rated at 35A max current, and if this table is anything to go by...
EZ Run Specs
Specifications Cells RPM/V [Kv] Idle Current [iO] (Amps) Resistance [Ri] Max amps
C40-09S 2-3 lipo/6-10NC 4300 2.4 0.0119 45
C40-10S 2-3 lipo/6-10NC 3900 2.2 0.0148 40
C40-11S 2-3 lipo/6-10NC 3600 1.9 0.0179 38
C40-12S 2-3 lipo/6-10NC 3300 1.6 0.0213 35
C40-13S 2-3 lipo/6-10NC 3000 1.4 0.0248 32
C40-14S 2-3 lipo/6-10NC 2800 1.2 0.0288 30
then the 4300kV draws 45A current , and i'd perhaps be better off with a 3300kV ???
Also a 4300kV will run to 31000rpm based on 7.2V stick pack, in which case does that infer its not very torquey and will have high top speed but lacking in acceleration ??
Sorry if i'm being stupid here, i've only just realised kV x battery volts = rpm !! DOH !!

Almost finished the Hotshot restoration and all i have is an old silver can...
Bare bones i'm going to need a ESC and a motor - i have a mtroniks sport auto 20 coupled to an ansmann clash 23T in my manta ray, and to be honest it goes pretty well to my eyes, and certainly quick enough when running outside the house and the local school car park, with its speed humps and kerb stones, lovely 4 wheel drifts on damp tarmac.
I've no idea how the gearing compares between the manta ray and the hotshot, but given the larger wheels of the hotshot i'm guessing i need a bit more torque / power to see similar performance ?
I know i can replicate the manta ray set up for around £25, or go with the same ESC and a Tamiya sport tuned or Dirt Tuned motor for £38-45, which may well be enough for my needs.
However i'm wondering about brushless, some combos are around £80 in the UK now, and maybe £60 imported. I have no idea of kV and how this relates to speed / torque / turns of a brushed motor, so could someone help me out..
is high kv good for speed and low kv torque ?
what sort of kv would suit the hotshot ?
I'll be using 5000mAh Vapextech NiMH packs, and have no plans for LiPo.
Thanks

I got some De-Solv-It sticky stuff remover from Aldi or Lidl before Xmas, and i've seen graffiti remover there before.

You can find a full list of Tamiya RC models here..
http://www.tamiyaclub.com/cars.asp
Clicking on each model number will reveal details of the model, members rides, manual and parts list (maybe QD models are less populated in detail and info than other models, but you should get some info there).
Most of the QD versions fall around model numbers 46000 to 46018, of which there are several 'monster truck' style models....
46004 Midnigth Pumpkin
46006/7/8 - versions of Monster Beetle
46012 Clod
46016 Blackfoot
46018 low ride pumpkin
Whilst each model will have some differences to chassis design and body mounting, the bodies themselves will be the right scale size and may give you more scope of picking up something via ebay etc.
A quick scan of ebay for 1/12 body came back with a load of hits , from cheap stockcar shells (£5) right through to a finished Lunchbox shell at £45 ! You should find some inspiration there, a Monster Mini lol ???

My son's birthday is 8 weeks away and i have 2 unpainted, uncut Hotshot shells - so glad this thread raised its head again !

5 pole armature identifies it as an aircraft motor. Usually they rev more but have less torque than car motors and they are designed to run at a steady speed, not stopping and starting.
If you are looking at the number of turns as a way of matching it to an ESC, the narrower winding stacks means that the wire is shorter on each pole so it draws more current compared with a 3 pole motor, but the 550 length can again means you can't compare it to a normal size motor either. As aircraft motors are designed to run at a steady speed they are usually rated by current draw or motor size, rather than the actual wind.
As for what ESC will work with it, you're just going to have to try it and see what happens.
Thank you for the explanation. For what it cost it's probably not worth me risking a speed controller and sounds like it's not going to have a lot of torque
-
Hey Dan,
If nothing else you've confirmed that in your current setup the silver can is worth nothing to you. So do what you can to it til you eventually kill it. If along the way the esc fails then you can always replace it with a £17 mtroniks sport auto 20 (20 turn limit) for use with a hotter motor like a tamiya rz, or take the route to brushless.
One things for sure it'll be fun seeing what transpires!
-
Superstock RZ is a high rev (27500rpm), but also high torque motor (500g/cm).
I know its been discussed before but at 23T and such high torque your ESC is in danger ! The RZ motor will be producing a lot more power than the Ansmann Clash 21T - good for wheelies, good for outright speed, BUT things are going to get hot !
Your £40 outlay on a RZ motor is better saved for a brushless upgrade IMO, and I know thats been suggested before.
Others may comment on the life of your gearbox with so much more motor torque over the silvercan.

I wonder what the average daily sale rate is of the rough rider and sand scorcher - across the globe it must be double digits per day, so thats at least 4000 per annum, and probably a lot more ?

Racing Green aerosol purchased at lunchtime !
edit 27/01/2016
not sure what happened to the rest of this thread, but a few finished photos added to help future readers.
The green never happened, nor the union jack decals - went boxart, but with an EZRun 4300kv (9T) brushless motor/esc kit.
finished with the original wheels resprayed in silver/chrome..
with Seben Racing wheels/tyres (£18 a set)..standard 12mm hex drive, so swapped the triangular wheel adaptors fro 12mm hexes
Still have it, its covered all of 100metres since it was 'restored' lol!

Being cynical it's a limited run to generate interest and they keep it going whilever theres revenue being created. On a less cynical note there is always the chance tamiya struck a supply deal for a certain number of a component, after which they discontinue the model. The latter is rather unlikely though given tamiya support models with spare parts for years n years.
-
Great! Glad you think my idea's a good one - are you going to go for that scheme then? I think it would be mean in BR Green!
P
Really don't know is the honest answer - BRG would go OK with the red shocks, or any future alternative shocks (such as yellow CVAs), and theseflag decals would also be fine, if not necessarily race buggy authentic...

Google it...
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_2334776/.../tm.htm#2334776
Not exactly the same, but I guess what you have is an aircraft motor..
Thanks for that - i found and read that thread before posting above; the motor i have is longer in the case (540 size n shape) than that one.
What i really need to know is the spec, or at least the number of turns - last thing i want to do is mount is and blow an ESC or rip a gearbox apart. I've tried Yokoma USA and Japan websites which have nothing similar or any historical info. I've search rc aircraft forums too without success too.
Looks like i'm going to have to open it up and see if i can find any markings as to turn number, or risk blowing an old MSC trying it !

Dan,
given your limited budget as a teenager, it might be easier to seek advice on motor specs...
Ansmann don't list torque figures, but the Clash 21T is rated at 25,300rpm, 7.2V and 9A, whereas the 23T is rated 23,200rpm, 7.2V and 16.5A. Online specs for Tamiya silver cans vary a bit from website to website , but a 540J is 27T, with 7.9A, 14,500rpm 255g/cm torque at best efficiency whilst a RS-540SH 13A, 19740rpm and 312g/cm torque at max efficiency. RS540 Sport Tuned would give you 18,300rpm, 12A and 350g/cm torque at best efficiency.
As has been said before for wheelies you really need torque, not necessarily a rapid (high rpm) motor. Your current motor might give more top speed, if the motor could spin up high enough with the gearing, but its less likely to jump off the line and potentially lift the front end (light as it is on the fighter buggy). Its difficult to get any feel for how the Ansmanns compare in torque, but something like a sport tuned Tamiya could potentially be a big upgrade to the Ansmann.
As an alternative to moving the battery back you could just add a bit of ballast to the rear end - a good chunk of plasticine stuck onto the end of the gearbox case should do it lol!
-
Anyone shed any light on this motor, I bought it as new old stock at a lhs but not sure what it is, may not even be rc car related?
Black plastic end bell is stamped yokomo, as is the shaft end of the champagne/gold coloured motor case. Label around body of motor says Force 120PB and stock, special, high rev, 7.2 - 9.6v and also JP. I can see 5 sets of multiple copper wire windings inside for what it's worth.
Doesn't look like a budget motor but no idea of it's spec, age or intended use!.

Hey percymon
I have a set of the front metal uprights (as found on supershot) going spare.
If you are interested, PM me!
PM sent, although having researched a bit more this afternoon, i don't think i'll bother thanks.
I can't find any online UK Tamiya spares place listing the bottom brackets or the full damper parts.
If i manage to find the bottom brackets chances are they'll be sold as part of the whole front system. Many thanks for the offer and a very reasonable price.
Managed to get some poor quality pics when i got home - sure looks better than the opening post lol!!
