  1. Really should get some more pics up as its pretty unrecogniseable from the opening post now! will try to take some tonight.

Front end rebuilt - i think the only original parts are about half the gearbox internals, the propshaft coupling, the drive shaft couplings and the upper and lower wishbones. The rest has been replaced with original or rere parts.

Rear end partly rebuilt - as per the front, only original bits are a few internals from the gearbox and the propshaft coupling plus upper and lower wishbones !. Still got the stabiliser to fit, held up as the ball connector bag i bought only had 2 of them (should have been 4 !). Fitted the original 540 motor it came with, but might swap this for a new Ansmann 21T or 23T as they are cheap and i ahve one in the Manta Ray and it goes well enough for my driving talent in a 4WD buggy.

I've put the hop-up rear suspension to one side, and built new monoshocks for front and rear using the new original hotshot metal cylinders, inner parts and springs coupled to rere plastic end caps, filled with Schumacher 60 silicon damper oil.

Driver head and the upper body contained on the chassis have tested my hand stability and painting skills (probably not done anything like this in 30 years !), but as a first attempt i'm quite impressed with my result :D albeit its nowhere near as good as others i've seen here

Awaiting new body and decals, plus a second body i bought from mikef350 here - one will no doubt be boxart, the other i really don't know and i got little inspiration from viewing the cans of Tamiya aerosol yesterday at the LHS (maybe racing green with union jack decals ?)

Wheels need a clean, degrease and then i'm going to chrome them with Fastrax chrome paint (awaiting guidance on primer/backer from Fastrax).

Will drop in a mtroniks auto sport ESC, nice n cheap and 21T limit, and again works well in my Manta Ray.

I'm not totting up the cost <_< - i know i could have bought a new rere for the same outlay, but another Tamiya would have been in landfil and i've enjoy rebuilding and restoring this one.

  2. Well I got a nice surprise whilst sifting through the various bags of new parts I'd bought. In the bag with the roof section was the access cover. Not sure whether this should have been there ( maybe seller broke up the pressed metal parts bag into smaller units ?) but I have it; bit of a bonus!

  3. ebay lists the supershot type under chassis protection plate, sometimes also refered to as revised front bumber. This may give you an idea of the fixing options.

Perhaps fitting some discrete ducting to increase airflow over the ESC and/or motor might help - most model/hobby shops stock metal tubing in various sizes which should be relatively easy to bend and cable tie to a suitable structure.

Cooling or removing heat from the radio box section is even more difficult with the old Hotshot chassis as there is no top access cover to play tunes with.

  4. You won't find it in the original Hotshot manual as it wasn't a Hotshot part, it was only used on the Hotshot 2 and is in the Hotshot 2 press parts bag, 9405321

According to the rerelease Hotshot manual, it's also listed in the new press parts bag, part number 9400639.

I guessed it might be only part of a bag, but Tamiya are hopeless at times listing everything thats in the combined parts bag on the parts lists (although i've now spotted it as a written part on page 25 of the rere manual). Tamiya were clever to not show the part , otherwise i'de have a perfect template to reproduce from. As its the only part from that bag i need i guess i'll be making my own, based on the aperture in the chassis.

    Thanks for your help

  5. Rebuilding my ebay Hotshot wreck and I am using a rere2007 chassis.

I need the access cover plate (the piece that fits atop the chassis to allow top access to the radio box, and holds the hex for the body mount), but i can't for the life of me find a part number for it either from the original 58047 Hotshot or the 58391 Rere manuals/part lists.

Can anyone help me out ?

    Thanks in advance.

  6. Thanks everyone. I guess I should hold off on a repaint until warmer temps roll around.

Friday might be a good option. As recommeded warm the can (bring indoors 24hours before, and warm for a few minutes in warm water before use), give can a good 5 minutes shake to fully mix and warm the body with a hair drier or fan heater prior to spraying. Once sprayed try to get the body to a warm dry place, rather than leaving in the garage.

Good luck -i'm having a go at my Manta Ray body later this week - flip-flop lacquer followed by black backing coat.

  7. Sorry, got called into work last night and only just got home - will send payment through now and PM you the delivery address

    Thanks

Money now sent as gift, i picked up the fees. Pls check your messages for delivery address

    Thanks again,

    David

  8. when did you order these wheels mate?

i ordered mine on the 18th dec 2010 ,still nothing .

Ordered 23rd December, I think they despatched something like 29th. I would have got them wednesday had I been at home. Collected from mail depot today and the jiffy bag was a bit battered but contents fine. Tyre sidewalls seem softer than tamiya but wheels look great for the money.

  9. I'm not far off completing the rebuild of my part original, mostly new Hotshot.

I've looked through the showroom for some inspiration on colour schemes, with the following conclusions..

Gunmetal - my first non boxart choice - not so sure anymore, maybe would be OK if i silvered/chromed the roll cage to give it some relief (and chromed the wheels)

Black - no, too much black with the chassis, and no detail stands out

White - no, personal view but i don't like the one i've seen in white

Silver - maybe, but not sure whether white or chromed wheels will go well ?

    French Blue - possibly

    Turquoise - possibly

    Dark Blue PS-16 - possibly

Initially at least it will run with the original metal/red monoshocks front and rear which is partly why i'm struggling to be convinced of any colour that will sit happily with the dampers. If later on i switch to hop-up yellow dampers i want something that won't look stupid then too.

I'll be using original decals , so again the colour needs to have sufifcient contrast to allow the decals to be seen - blue decal on silver OK, but blue on blue is useless etc.

I guess others have the same dilema, hence why 90%+ are red !

  10. I agree I would love one of these but £450 is insane, isn't an HPI Baja about £600?

I've only seen one of the big UK on line model retailers advertising the price - whether £449 is the official Tamiya price i don't know, but the price might drop once other retailers have their prices up. There is currently up to about 15% difference between some retailers on other models, even more difference where some are still holding prices and other quoting revised ones.

  11. Is anyone actually going to buy one of these from a UK seller at £450? I forsee a LOT of these UK kits staying on shop shelves.

After all the recent price rises a hotshot is £200 so I guess those that want to buy locally will buy at £450, a sand scorcher is now £280+

  12. And today i've managed to buy another original hotshot metal damper and a full inner damper kit. Plan is to build up with original monoshock set-up front and rear initially. I'll keep hold of the HP rear set-up and maybe buy the supershot front suspension at a later date and see how they compare handling wise.
