Chassis looks remarkably similar to a Tamiya Falcon doesnt it? Plastic driveshafts, rear trailing arms and oversized front A arms, even the tub looks similar. I like it!
It does look a lot like the Falcon for sure!

Oh, you're working on a vintage kit, that is awesome! The chassis looks fantastic, and I'm sure that Le Mans motor will be pure bliss!

Thanks! I remember looking through the Tower Hobbies catalog back in the day and drooling over all the LeMans motors and Kyosho kits. Very glad to have an example of both today to enjoy!

After a summer having an "affair" with my other hobby (RC aircraft), I decided to build my Icarus. I think it is a neat looking buggy, much better than the Bandido/Pegasus. So far, it has been a fun build! It has a few quirks, like "bendy" plastic suspension hinge points and plastic driveshafts/outdrives. Thanks for looking!

Getting close to finishing the Super Champ build and I am thinking I might start this one next. Just received this in the mail today and it is going to be a King Cab using a ***** body, some vintage Autographics decals, and new wheels. The tires are in very good shape and will be reused. Overall, the chassis is in great condition, complete with Thorp axles in the rear.

Thank you very much! Tonight I worked on the lights and started the driver. Also painted the dash. So glad for the re-re Buggy Champ which enabled me to source these parts cheaply.
Here is the dash. i used a method I use on my static plastic models and put a drop of "Future" floor coating in each bezel to give the look of glass:
Started the driver:
And the lights!:

Thanks a bunch mongoose! The netting is a perfect fit. Now I have 10 feet of it! :-) The decals are original and I am always amazed that these old Tamiya are still usable after all these years! Quality!

Thanks Shodog! I think I'll keep the tires as is for a bit. I kinda like the look of them!
I had to find a substitute for the kit netting as the kit supplied stuff is long gone. I went to my local craft store and found some floral netting for a few bucks, cut it out per instructions and used masking tape to surround the netting. I think it worked pretty well!

Broke out the airbrush this morning and painted the roll cage and side vents. Also cleaned up/polished the roof. Hopefully some decaling tonight!
Ooohh, indeed the Champ is an awesome car, and you sure do it proud with this kind of work.
I am a very big fan of the SC myself, and have a couple of my own also, including an original hopped-up version, and the only thing keeping me from running them a lot is the somewhat fragile body.. I know that other shells can be used on the car, but it just doesn´t look right, running a SC with another shell, I think.
Looking forward to seeing your next update on the car.

I agree! The SC needs to have its proper body shell on it. They are just so delicate! Thanks!

Thanks guys! I hope to paint some details tomorrow then on to decals! This is the ultrasonic cleaner I use. It really is worth it! Sometimes I might have to follow up with a toothbrush to get in the nooks and crannies but the old grease and grime comes right off! Works great for metal and plastic parts.

Thanks! You are correct! Retired after 22 years back in '12. I start working F-22s as a civilian in a couple of weeks. Looking forward to getting back to what I know!

Got a lot done today! I used a new damper oil bottle but plugged the outlet with a piece of toothpick. No oil puddles under this Super Champ!
I also put on black wheels with some old chrome wheel covers. I plan on installing period radio gear and MSC. Need a few more zip-ties then on to the body!Sneak peak...

Thanks for the tip! I will try it out!

Today I completed the front suspension. The parts are getting a nice cleaning and any corrosion removed. This is not going to be a shiny, polished, chromed show piece. I want it to be as close as possible to how it was back in the day. I did deviate with the front bumper...I don't want to pay for a new one so I used this one from RC Channel. I think is looks more scale and much improved over the kit bumper.

That gray framed "Frog" is actually an odd mix. It appears to have the Blackfoot-type front suspension. They used two plastic bearings on each front wheel because the axles are longer for the monster truck wheels. The red pieces were probably reused after replacing the red chassis with a gray one from a Frog. If only the models could talk!

Got my Willy! (new pix)

Just received my Willy today! It is in great shape! Glad to see the grill is intact along with the winch. The part that keeps the windshield up against the roll bar is broken ( I can live with that). Very happy with this purchase!
