Ooooh... all cut out ready to paint! Have you decided on the final colour yet, or are you still pondering? I feel it's easier to pick a colour for the TW than the DW, since the DW has decals on the wing with orange, black, white and gold colours... trying to find a colour that can match them and not look too goofy. The TW has no such problem, with the exception of some of the colours of the decals. Go for metallic colour, it glistens in the sunlight!
Ah yeah, the wheel axle. Hm, don't want to cut through that. I suppose cutting it into pieces might be the best, and easiest, method to ensure it's TOTAL DESTRUCTION! Ahem...
Sucks about the Mustang shell. No-one wants it.. it's even some how LOST a view, when from 18 to 17... no-one is interested whatsoever! All after all the work I put in to it. waiting for months for the decals to come in stock... couldn't even convince the original owner to buy it back, lol. oh well.
-
Yeah, always a good idea to have even wear, that way they continue to wear evenly as you use it. Else one tyre will have more or less grip than the others and you won't be able to control the buggy very well.
Ah, that rounded wheel nut still give you issues I see. Unfortunately, it does look like a rotary tool may well be your best bet. Would you cut a slot in the nut and unscrew it like a flat-head screw? Or just cut that nut off completely?
Well, there's a bit of damage on one that I couldn't fix, so I cut the damage out. The result is now a hole. The hole is neat, it's not rough or ugly or anything, but it's there. But the main issues, which you can't really see in photos, is the previous owner widened the front wheel arches, as if to accommodate bigger wheels. So when the shell is on the chassis, the wheels don't fill the arches snuggly like they would normally. It looks odd when on a chassis and not very appealing, at least to me. So I threw it on eBay.. still only 18 views. Surprising really, it's a rare shell.
I even tried to convince the original owner to buy it back by telling him it's on eBay, my way of saying "I don't want it, do you" but he didn't bite, lol.
-
Are they the wheels you purchased off eBay with the new HoBao rubber on them? They don't look as beat up as they did in the original photo you showed me. Or are they your original DW wheels with the new rubber on? Saying that.. those don't have the marks in the centre made by the wheel nut.. so those are indeed the ones you purchased off eBay.
Those fresh tyres do make them look quite good though, almost brand new! Almost... the shiny rubber helps, lol.
The Mustang shell refurb has gone well, better than expected. It' on eBay now, lol. Very little interest, which is quite surprising given how rare this shell is. A few niggles with it that make me not want to keep it. I might actually try to sell it to the person who gave it to me! Fresh coat of metallic blue, backed with white then black. New plastic parts for the spoiler and wing mirrors that I also painted metallic blue, and a brand new set of decals.
-
So they did... black ones. Yet we can't really find them anywhere, except that eBay auction, where the seller only has two. Not very useful when most cars have four wheels.
And the one's in the second eBay listing are brand new which is good. The black ones appear in stock at the moment, although they have the black and white images mixed up. I'm always cautious when buying from a seller from China supposedly based in the UK. I try to buy from sellers with 99% or more feedback. I'm picky, lol.
I'll probably stick to these JetKo wheels. They fit fine, are decently cheap AND readily available. I'll still look out for original DW wheels, but I probably have a better chance of winning the lottery. But you never know.
-
Wow, those are really worn, lol... must have seen a lot of run time! And the wheels definitely do resemble the originals, especially now they are on the Desertwolf. Maybe they really WERE original DW wheels with some different rubber on them. If that's the case, and they were never made by HoBao, then we still have no alternatives to the original wheels.
But yeah, if you can peel off the rubber and put some new ones on, should look pretty good. Just wish we had those 5 spoke HoBao ones in black, instead of white.
-
Hm, they do look like the tyres. Should fit on the DW wheels, assuming you can take the old ones off without too much trouble.
I can't find the green, red or yellow versions on MIBI though. Would have definitely preferred black, or silver/grey. Shame really because I quite like the looks of those wheels.
And it's possible I guess, that someone put the HoBao tyres on the DW wheels. If you needed new tyres, that's pretty much something you'd do anyway, so it makes sense.
Tyre glue should seal the cracks nicely, but how long it'll last is another story. Especially under those speeds. Only way to know for sure is to give it a try!
-
Interesting. Yeah, I can 't seem to to find those either, under the HoBao Hyper 7.
Yeah, quite worn, lol. The tyres are particularly bad. Maybe you can remove them at some point and replace them with some new 1/8 scale tyres, assuming the glue isn't still holding on for dear life.
I did do an image search for HoBao 1/8 wheels to see if I could find anything, like a part number or the model they're usually attached to. But so far, I can't find anything. Can't find a single image of these wheels. Strange.
Would be nice to have an alternative source for some like-for-like wheels... if we can even find more and where they come from... other than HoBao.
-
Lol, true enough. Been working on it for the last day or so.
Sanded down the edges, removed any flaking paint, removed the old decals, cut out the new decals... just waiting for the paint and masking tape to arrive today, and I can get on with the actual refurb!
-
Not sure if I want to make a YouTube series about this now... if I di that, it means having to wait between shots, and I don't want to wait, lol. So... might get on and start with the things I can do now. There isn't mush to show on video anyway, so... not sure.
-
What's involved?
Well, I've just bought some cans of PS-16 Metallic Blue and some masking tape in order to start the refurb. First I'll cut out the new stickers and then remove the old ones. Give the shell a clean, then mask the whole of the outside so I can paint the inside metallic blue. I'll also paint the spoiler and mirrors. There's some body work to repair, which hopefully will go well, but there's also some I can't repair, which kinda puts me off from keeping the shell.
Once it's painted, I can put the new decals on. And after that, should be job done. Hardest and longest part will probably be trying to mask the whole outside of the shell to make sure no overspray occurs.
-
That's a lot of decals! And a lot of white... shame there isn't at least one or two orange decals, given that's HPIs colour.
Well, a little... last week I finished painting 3 body shells... a Tamiya Subaru Impreza, HPI Bullet Nitro and a Traxxas Rustler shell. Yesterday, I was finally able to get the Tamiya Mustang SVT decals from Tonys Tamiya Parts, after I got an email to say they were in limited stock. I bought them quick as ****, lol. I went pack to the decals and saw they had sold out... I possibly bought the ONLY decal set they received from Tamiya Japan! Pricey though at £26... but I might try to re-sell the shell afterwards. I also need to get some metallic blue paint, white and black. I already have some white and black though, thankfully.
So this week will be the refurb of the Tamiya Mustang shell. I hope to make a YouTube series out of it. I doubt it'll be very interesting, but I sometimes like documenting things like that.
-
Well, at least you got a refund... but now you're missing the tool required to remove the remaining wheel.
Was cheap, but functional with a load of attachments. Nice. I had a Parkside soldering iron, was also quite cheap. Lasted a long time though, did a lot of soldering with it until it eventually stopped working. Started making crackling noises then just died.
Maybe use the refund to put towards another rotary tool. Seems like it's the only way to actually remove the wheel nut successfully with the least amount of hassle.
And yeah, that glue is on there, lol. I'd say putting the wheels in boiling water can often help loosen up the glue, but er... the wheels kinda need to be off the car!
-
Haha... mine also came with a set of those as well. They do look nice, and resemble some real BBS alloys. Nice set if you can get them cheap enough.
-
I got them from AliExpress, so I had to wait for them from China. They actually didn't take long to arrive. I got the M6x8 (50pcs) washers with a thickness of 0.5mm, as the 1.0mm were out of stock:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32917972607.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.5.3a8e1802719YFkIf you get a new set of wheels, you should be OK and shouldn't need the washers. if however, you replace the wheel hexes with the best alternative (HPI ones) then you WILL need the washers to make the new hexes fit better without them getting crushed against the bearing.
-
I think they are different somehow... it's the reason I wasn't able to tighten the wheel nuts without the hex getting crushed against the bearing in the wheel hub.
I bought some HPI alloy wheels hexes thinking they'd be pretty much a like-for-like replacement, but they weren't.
What I think is different is the original hexes have a shallower fit on the hex pins than the HPI ones I bought. If that makes sense? In other words, the HPI ones I bought have a deeper recess for the hex pin, so it sits closer to the hub than the original hexes...
Not sure if any of that made actual sense, lol.
-
Yeah, those things really do grip the wheel quite tightly. Definitely can make it hard to unscrew, even when the nut's HAVEN'T been rounded off. And they definitely shouldn't come off during use. As long as you screw them on night and tight... *cough*cough*
I'm quite surprised that the pliers couldn't get enough of a grip. And the cutting discs kept breaking and then the tool itself decided it was done with being alive? Some morning.
At least you finally got the thing off, with minimal to no damage to the wheel. That would have been disastrous for sure. And no damage to the original wheel hexes either, those are also impossible to find.
And with new wheel nuts on, you can finally remove the wheels if you ever need to do some maintenance and repairs, or replace the wheels with some that are less rare.
Although you said at the end of the message you just need to do the other side.... did you manage to get that one done or are you leaving that one for another day? Oh, and you might not have a tool with enough torque to cut anymore either. Oh dear.
-
Those ones on eBay should fit. The only thing I really looked for was the 17mm hex. As long as the hex was the correct size, I thought (and hoped) they should fit without a problem.
These are the ones mine came with:
https://www.modelsport.co.uk/product/fastrax-1-8-maze-block-mounted-on-8-spoke-black-2--405170And these are the ones I purchased:
https://www.modelsport.co.uk/product/jetko-1-8-buggy-extreme-tyre-tomahawk-belted-on-black-rim-2--1337894 -
Not even pliers have enough grip? Hm... problem indeed. Filing some flat surfaces somehow seems like a viable option, then you can get some new wheels nuts. Well, hopefully you won't need to remove the wheel, but I think not being able to do some cleaning or maintenance.. or replace any bearings... might get a little annoying eventually.
The wheel came of because the nut wasn't tight enough. But I couldn't tighten it up because it caused the hex to get crushed against the bearings in the hub and the wheels wouldn't turn, so I had to loosen the nuts a little. But because of the speed the wheels where going at, it undid the nut. Thankfully, I found a little fix using some washers from AliExpress, as it was the only place that did the exact size I needed.
So you managed the silver, but they didn't have white? I think white and black are always in high demand, often seem to be sold out in many places. Is the silver for the new TW shell or something else?
-
Hm... possibly then the only way around the rounded off wheel nuts is to use a pair of pliers or something. They should easily grip the nut, even if it's rounded off... and you might be able to unscrew them that way. Thankfully, the wheels nuts the DW uses are still available to buy, so if you can remove the old ones with some pilers, you can install some new ones that AREN'T rounded off.
-
I hope they arrive soon... been waiting since at least Feb 1st for them to come back in stock.
I'd like to take it out properly at some point, but there's no where really close enough to take it. Outside the house is kinda small, too many things to crash into. The best places are about a 5 minute drive away. So will try to get out there eventually.
Yep, that's why it's a good idea to keep a basher body handy! My current shell will be the basher, and my new one will eventually take its place if the original get's too beat up. I never rolled mine, but I was just going up and down the road, only going full throttle from a standing start once... then the wheel decided to escape, lol.
Might want to keep those original wheels in good condition as well, since you can't get them anymore. Shame if they got badly scratched. The ones mine came with are available on Modelsport for like £15 a pair.
And a 10 second clip, lol. Well we all gotta start somewhere! Next time though, remember to turn around and catch it coming back!

Indeed. Silver shell thrown out, but will wait a little while before I acquire another clear Desertwolf shell. I have two original shells so no shortage there. That, and I've already painted 4 shells in the past week.
You finally sold your Tamiya Nissan Titan.. is that on the DT-02 chassis? Or similar? Always a bit of a downer to get less than what you hoped for, but at least it sold. I'm still trying to sell that iridescent purple/green DW shell and a Traxxas Rustler shell...
I'm currently waiting for Tonys Tamiya Parts to get some Tamiya Mustang SVT decals in. They were supposed to get them months ago, but Tamiya UK still haven't received stock of them from Japan yet. The same guy that gave me the Desertwolf also gave me a rare Tamiya Ford Mustang SVT Cobra body shell. It's some new paint, which will be easy enough, but the decals need replacing. Can't restore the shell until the decals are in. Hate waiting!
-
It was actually just normal orange, I didn't end up doing the metallic orange like I originally planned.
I do have some acetone free nail polish remover that I use for paint removal, so I can use that... but I think I'll either leave it or bin it and do another one in the future.
-
It does.. I wish I did it to my white Ford GT as well. I have another GT in silver.
I kind of have two main hobbies... gaming (PC and console) and radio control. RC is by far and away the one that takes most of my time... and money... compared to gaming. Yep, nothing like receiving a huge box of RC bits and pieces, or even a whole new car. Like Christmas has come early every time. And it's not sad, lol... it's a good idea to have photo records just in case, but also to just have the photo in the first place.
Same... I think once I've done a third DW shell (possibly) I'm done with painting them. I have two original shells, that iridescent shell that I might keep since no-one seems to buy it, and a silver shell which MIGHT get thrown out since it's painted on the outside and the overall finish is a bit naff.
My last Lexan shell that I cut out was a few days ago. Not counting the three other shells I've cut in the past months. The recent one was a Tamiya Subaru Impreza WRC 2007 for my rally modded TT-02. The large Subaru decals on the sides were nerve racking to put on, lol. I'll take a photo later.

Silver should work... I think that colour is almost a universal colour, and fits with many other colours. In my opinion, it looks good with red, blue, green and purple colours. And black to some degree.
If you're going to use white, may I make a suggestion that'll help make the TW look a little more unique? Use a few coats of Tamiya PS-57 Pearl White. It'll give the white a nice pearlescent look to it. This is a video of the pearl white on a Ford GT shell:
https://youtu.be/5ier06YP2NU?t=821I do like the blue and white scheme of the Jumpshot though.
I might be a little crazy, but there's a chance I'm gonna get a third clear DW body shell and give the translucent colours backed with gold or silver a go. I want to try translucent red backed with gold, should give a nice vibrant candy red look. Won't suit the DW's colours on the wing decals, but.. I could always remove the decals off my original wing, since I now have a new one.

Oh no... you forgot the PS-57 Pearl White! Well, it was just a suggestion... looking forward to seeing the final result!
My next RC job? None yet... I do want to get some upgrades for my Maverick ION MT. I also want to get a clear body shell for my new FTX Carnage 2.0 that I got for my birthday today. I always like to clear shells for my cars, so I can keep the original shells in good condition. Thankfully, the shell in question is only like £15, so might get that sooner rather than later.
Also, you wouldn't happen to be interested in buying one of two Kyosho Optimas would you?
