It should look good, though the metallic orange won't be a great match to the flat orange. Indeed, the clear shell comes with all the wing decals as well. I've put Modelsport stickers on the ends of my wing, but I'm not sure weather to put the original decals on instead.
Ah nice, didn't think of that. The wing already being decaled up.. makes sense, since the body was pre-painted.
-
Thanks.. the condition is quite surprising, given that the plastic chassis and metal chassis plate were quite badly scratched. So mine mist have got a lot of action, but very little to no rollovers.
I take it you have some more decals to put on the new wing? I'll put them back on mine once I paint the shell. It looks kinda boring with just the Maverick decal on it.
-
Oooh.. yeah, that does need a bit of work, lol. Will look a lot nicer when it has some new decals on it.
I took my original decals off, cut out the large Maverick logo and put that on. Mostly because the orange colour scheme wouldn't fit with the iridescent purple and green colour of the first clear shell I bought. But now I'm going to paint the second shell orange, I'm going to put the original decals on.

It can be quite hateful.. especially the tight, tricky corners that even curved scissors struggle to get around.
But once you're done cutting and sanding, and the good job you did... makes it worth it, lol. As long as you don't make any mistakes while cutting that could ruin the shell completely... I always fear that!
-
Actually, curved scissors helped out quite a bit... still a pain in the butt but small, curved scissors made it *somewhat* easier to cut out. Make sure you have some sandpaper to clean up the rough edges you'll no doubt end up with, lol.
-
You do indeed get the nose cone! A bit of a ****** to cut it out since it's so small, but it's doable.
-
I saw a few DesertWolf wings for sale on their own, I think of Wheelspin.. but it was discontinued so you couldn't buy it or anything, but it was still there.
Now, even when I do a Google search, I can find anything... even if I do an image search, not a single picture of an actual DesertWolf wing! We're sitting on a small, plastic goldmine, lol.
-
It it a bit much, but the original DesertWolf wing was about £32 I think, before it was discontinued... or was it £32 BECAUSE it was discontinued...? I can't quite remember, but I do know it was pricey for a piece of plastic.
And I believe this is the Vorza wing: https://www.makeitbuildit.co.uk/collections/hpi-vorza-parts/products/hpi-1-8-deck-wing-black

I've just sent Modelsport a message, asking them if the pre-painted shells...or shell, singular... they have in stock also include the rear wing. Just need to wait to see what they say.
I did find a wing for an HPI Vorza, that LOOKS like it might fit... it's not too expensive, I might buy one and see if it fits, see if the screw holes are the right fitment.
-
Neither ModelSport nor Wheelspin mention the fact the fact they come with the wing... even HPI's website doesn't mention an included wing. Was the wing you received sealed inside the package with the body? Like, did it look factory sealed, and it wasn't opened prior and the wing placed in there by the seller?
-
Wow... you got super lucky getting a wing with a body. I can't find the original for sale anywhere, not even eBay... and I have no idea what other 1:8 scale wings might fit.
Thankfully, my wing is pretty much in brand new condition, no scratches, scuffs or damage. If you ever remember, or rediscover, what alternate wing might fit the DesertWolf, do let me know. I'll see if I can find it, and might buy it to keep the original in good condition.
-
Your shell came with a wing?? I've bought two clear body shells this year alone and not one came with a rear wing... maybe just the pre-painted ones come a wing??
-
Pretty much, mine did look stable in the short time I had running it... before the wheel went for a little vacation.
And I had to buy the wing mounts when i got the DesertWolf as it was missing them. Thankfully, it came with the original wing, which is now pretty much non-existent... so definitely try to keep your wing intact and in place at all costs!
-
To be honest, I've never really seen much of a difference with sway bars... I could be wrong, and it could make a huge difference, but it's definitely not something I'd do, simply because I'm not really sure if it makes much of a difference. To me anyway...
-
Ah, standard 3.2mm... not 5mm. The HobbyWing motor I got had a 5mm shaft, so I had to remember to get a 5mm pinion.
Exactly, it'll help a bit with the stability. Not too concerned about ride height, it won't be doing any extreme off-roading or anything. I haven't rolled mine either.. although it's only been once, shortly before the wheel flew off, lol...
Yep, still available, though shadow stock, but can still buy it thankfully. And I think the forum replaced my word with "badword" lol... the word I used rhymes will Bell!
-
Yeah, the teeth definitely look less spaced apart for the Arrma pinion. 32 pitch, the Arrma ones use something called Mod1. At least you have the Maverick 15t pinion to use. Does it also use a 5mm bore, like the Arrma one?
Ah, so the centre diff drive shafts, got ya. I did look in to if the the rears also have CVD shafts. I think it's just the fronts, and the rears only use dog-bones.
Hm, that's a fair amount of upgrades back when this was new. The Turnbuckle Set is up next for me, along with some new 95mm shocks, instead of the 100mm it currently has. Lower the CG a little. Oh, and definitely might get a new alloy chassis plate, since mine is seriously scratched to badword.
-
By drive shafts, as we talking about the dogbones? If so, I didn't even know there were upgrades to the DesertWolf for that.
Yeah, mine has a 15t pinion on it from Arrma. I could go 16t, but it feels fast enough as it is. Since your DW is using the stock centre diff, I assume Arrma pinions won't work due to the tooth pitch. I had to make sure the pitch matched the FTX diff and Arrma pinion.
So for yours, I reckon a 15t upgrade would help at giving it a little bit more speed!
I'm sure I'll get the shell soon enough, then all the paints. So far, a total of 13 paint cans will be required, lol. Plus the cost of the Impreza shell.. I need to rob a bank or something!
-
'tis a nice Sand Scorcher you got there, the orange looks good in the... sun?
No updates on it yet. I have three clear shells I need to paint, including the DesertWolf... but I also need a 4th shell, a Subaru Impreza for my rammy-modified TT-02. THEN I need the paints....
Once I've got the shell, I'll get the paint.. then I'll finally have an update, lol. Money though. Need money!
-
The orange does look good, that's for sure. It suites the car quite well. Hopefully the metallic orange will look even nicer, especially in the sun light.
I'll also have some spare HPI Racing stickers from my HPI Bullet shell (comes with two sheets of decals) so I might use some of them as well.
And I do indeed have quite a few body shells, an expensive hobby to be sure, lol.
-
This is a nice blue... minimal decals, usually the best way to go. I have some HPI decals I might throw on to the DesertWolf shell once painted.
I'm a bit partial to Tamiya Metallics myself, lol... I often paint every body shell using a metallic colour. The DesertWolf shell will be metallic orange, my HPI Bullet shell metallic purple and Traxxas Rustler shell metallic blue. Still need to get the Rustler shell though.
-
Won't be anything special... just metallic orange. Was debating on whether to put some scale items on the body, like a NOS bottle, lol. I do have another body painted in Tamiya iridescent purple and green. Looks nice, especially in the sun.
-
Hm, I find one MSC-29BL-80WP on eBay for £50... so I could go original if I wanted. But since the new brushless system put in there was £135... I don't want to feel like I've wasted that, lol.
The turnbuckle set is pretty inexpensive, so I might get them at some point as another upgrade. Other than the shocks, and body to paint, I think the DesertWolf will be pretty much complete at that point.
-
Ah, cool... all the pictures I've seen just shows a pair of turnbuckles. So I had a better look, and yeah... the set contains ALL the turnbuckles. So that's good, but the turnbuckles look so thin, will they withstand a collision?
Could do that with the shocks. I do like the look of the original plastic shocks over the alloy gold shocks, for some reason. But the alloy shocks are a little cheaper. Very odd though, the front shocks are virtually impossible to find, yet the rear ones are a bit easier... well, not THAT much easier, but still easier.
So it's not 3S capable out of the box? Or it IS but the original cooling fan isn't up to the job of keeping it cool.
Carbon fibre would look good, but for the price... it's more bling than anything else. IF they were to ever go on sale, such as on Make It Build It, then might be worth investing.
-
Ah, you DID do the turnbuckle upgrade... actually looks pretty good Might have to invest in some myself. You also have a steering turnbuckle... haven't seen one of those anywhere yet.
Before I get some Maverick alloy shocks, are the original plastic ones you have just as good? Or do they at least feel as good as a set of alloy ones? I can find some rear ones, but no fronts... unless both are the same?
Thankfully the body shell is still available, both pre-painted and clear ones. Got a clear shell ready to paint, along with a small Maverick ION MT shell.
Are your electronics still stock? Anything changed or upgraded? Mine came without any electronics so had to replace everything. Annoyingly, the new ESC was too tall to fit at the front, so had to place it in the receiver box, which is missing the top cover. As for the carbon fibre upgrades? Hmm... not sure. No idea if they're stronger. Looks wise, I'd say they were worth it. But for strength? Unknown to be honest. If you can still get them, and they're not too expensive, I'd say get them, because why not?

Well, if I had a second wing, I'd paint one metallic orange and keep one black... given how rare the original wing is, I'd probably keep it original. If I had another wing, such as that Vorza one... I might paint the Vorza wing metallic orange. Or at least some parts of the wing orange, and keep some parts black.
