  1. It seems like this release has brought the ebay sellers out of hiding. There's probably about a dozen used beetles up there now, and 2 or 3 NIB kits. I haven't seen that many for sale in a long while! It doesn't seem to have affected the price on spares yet though. $125 for A-parts? Yikes!

  2. I was just going through some old files and found these photo cards that I got in some kits that I bought back around 2000 or so. Does Tamiya still include these in any kits? I was just wondering how long they put them in kits and which kits they were included in. I was thinking of hanging these in frames in my workshop.

If anybody else has these, post some pics!

  3. Good eye, I didn't notice the sticker over the extra front body mount hole.

The beetle was also my first RC model. I remember a friend of mine getting a Nichimo Spirit FF over the summer of '89. I got to drive it once for about 30 seconds and after that I was hooked. I saw the Beetle in a magazine shortly after that and asked for it for Christmas. That was a long stretch until December. I tormented my mother all autumn wondering if I would get it. There was one point where I was sitting on this old clothes chest in her sewing room, going on and on about the Monster Beetle, meanwhile the kit was hidden in the chest I was sitting on.

  4. I hope they release some body-off photos soon. Interested to see how things are laid out underneath. I'm guessing the ESC is mounted in the old receiver position, but where does that put the receiver? It kind of looks like the servo cover made it into the re-re, but that doesn't leave much room for a receiver underneath.

I'm trying to get my son to ask for one for Christmas. It's not going well so far.

  5. It looks like the Sand Scorcher window. If you look through the front window in the picture, you can see where the glass goes up sharply behind the right rear window. It does look like it's tinted though. Maybe the SS mold with tinted glass?

I wonder if they reinforced the tabs on the front clip where the spotlights are mounted?

I'm so excited for cheap spares!

Here's the link to the product page on tamiyausa.com - http://www.tamiyausa.com/items/radio-control-kits-30/trucks-36500/rc-monster-beetle-2015-58618 No new info there, but good to see it on the big T site!

  6. It might be easier to wire the lights into a Y-harness along with your ESC. The ESC is feeding your Rx with 6 volts, so if you plugged the ESC and the lights into a Y, then plugged the Y into the receiver, that would also power your lights with 6V. That way you wouldn't have to alter the ESC.

  7. I'm in the middle of a similar project with my Lunchbox!

What kind of receiver and battery are you using?

One thing I have found out about using LEDs is that using resistors with them is a good idea, otherwise they tend to burn out prematurely, even if you are powering them with a voltage they are rated for. There are some websites like this one - http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz - that will help you figure out what size resistors to wire in, and how to wire them in, as well as explain why you need resistors a lot better than I can :) . I was testing a couple of LEDs without resistors, and after just a few minutes, one of them was already going dim.

My plan is to wire up two parallel LEDs with a resistor in series with each LED, and connect that into a modified servo like this http://www.instructables.com/id/Convert-a-Servo-to-switch-on-and-off-LEDs/. You basically remove the servo logic board, replace the motor with a plug to connect lights to, and replace the potentiometer with a pair of 2.2K resistors. That way I can control the headlights from the 3rd channel on my transmitter.

Another thing I recommend is buying warm white flat-top LEDs. The light looks a lot more natural than a typical white LED (IMO) and it's looks a lot better in an old van like the LB.

  8. Worst: Had to be the Kyosho USA-1. First time I ran it, the gears stripped and was never able to get it to run reliably.

Worse than that had to be an MRP High Roller that I attempted to build for a friend. You could twist that chassis into a pretzel if you grabbed the front and rear of it. Pure junk.

Best: Monster Beetle, but mostly because it was my first RC and it was all I had for years. In reality, it was a maintenance nightmare and handled like a fish tank.
