  1. I know this is a very old thread i started, a lot of things came up in my personal life that put the restoration on hold. I am finally in a position to continue... However I ran into a hurdle not that long after posting this thread. I was unable to dismantle the front end. This landjump had never been used much (near as i an tell) but took a massive hit, into a tree, a curb, who knows. The bumper had a huge dent, and I had assumed it took the full brunt of the damage. I dont know what you'd call them, Just the steel rods the front arms attach to.. bent just enough to make it near impossible to take it apart. It's hardend steel right? I tried using pipe wrenchs with rubber in between. I don't want to mare or worse snap them obviously as this is a vintage machine It's still all in parts and while I have done a lot more than my initial pictures I never got the front end disassembled Can anyone offer me some advice? The front end is in a zip locked sprayed with oil till I could so something with it. I just never did go futher
  2. Thanks for your response. Your suggestions make sense for the shocks however some have scratches above the shock collar. To be honest I can't get the shock collars free from some. I thought to freeze them and use a mini torch to minimize damage to the existing anodizing. (will soak in wd40 first to see) Using the shrink tubing will cover most of the wear, but from use... crashing/rolling and sun exposure there would still be exposed damage. From other threads I saw mention of red dye that was 'close' to factory though lacking in shine and durability. I may be able to substitute the mounting rubbing from 1/10 models I own (Ultima and Optima). The fuel tubing idea would certainly serve the purpose... will look Up the parts number (new/available)? "Second: the rusted steel parts, I clean the rusted parts with water and a power detergent (used for clothes like aerial) cause they are already rusted so water won't do extra harm but will easily clean them. next I wire brush them then I used to paint them black like what the factory does, or lately I chemically coat them with nickel to prevent future rust and to have look beautiful." Do you chemically coat them in nickel at home? In my original post this is what I refereed to as bluing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluing_%28steel which is what I assume was done for most steel parts on these cars I avoided doing much beyond a nylon scrub crush to the aluminum. Someone can correct me but I don't think the aluminum ever had a polished finish in which case steel wool should do the job. From the photos its a brushed metal look. I'd love to replace the screws. Could you direct me to a place online that has all sizes? I looked at some and could fine near replicas only the pitch wasn't the same. There are parts long gone i will have to re-fabricate like the bracket holding the servos. I have yet to take apart the front end but the front diff sounds bad, I'm assuming its metal gearing and Axel grease is the best replacement. I used 3in1 oil for all the bearings so far
  3. I could use help restoring these beasts beyond degreaser and wire brush. I mean I have a Dremel and polishing wheels. My biggest question or concern is looking good vs factory made. some pieces need re-bluing too. I know there are reproduction pieces online for tires,wheels, lexan driver pieces which i have no problem with Both cars are close to runners but I notice when comparing to the manual the wrong screw here or there, etc. I think the Impacta Baja is more rare(body disintegrated) but as it shares many parts and the Landjump is more impressive overall so I'm putting the best parts sharable on the Landjump. While restoring I have been researching the least destructive methods...acid baths vs electrolysis (rust removal). The shocks are an issue as I need to ether leave them be, strip them or have them re-anodized.As they stand some are faded and scratched. Compared a lot of similar restores I'm not missing much however they where stored in a garage that collapsed and the steel parts rusted.. I'm asking not just in the vain of looking good but end value even if they are to be shelf queens... Though I'd love to run the landjump a time or two first. rubber bits like those for the shocks are in bad shape.. so overall looking what are the closest replacement parts for things like that. Also read not to even try to start the vintage OS max engines without replacing the engine bearings any and all help appreciated Added pics.
