Deans if you're in the UK, much better choice of lipos.

I've a tub of various Schumacher shims, collected over the years... The likes of Modelsport have a big selection though!
-
I'd probably go boomerang. Classic, not overly complicated, no problem getting parts, handles modern power. Although, the TD4 is the same money atm...🤔 Saying that, this seems a bargain! https://www.modelsport.co.uk/product/tamiya-saint-dragon-4wd-2021-no-esc--1348297 Then £30 for a 1060 and 15t firebolt/Corerc...

Plenty of 2.2" tyre options (and a selection of bearing front wheels too). I've gone with kyosho turbo scorpion wheels (different front bearings required) and Proline Hooiser drag front / Proline prism rear tyres on my DT03 build (yeah, it's still in the build stage...🙈),
-
A slipper is more about control. To set a slipper, you kneel on the rear wheels, then roll on the throttle for a sec (otherwise you create enough heat, to melt the spur...🫣), when the front wheels only lift around an inch, its set about right (that's my starting point). So even if the car gets 100% grip, it'll only do an inch wheelie. This means it'll also slip if you land a bit wrong (saves parts)., and you can also land on the power. I've run a Castle 5700kv on 5s (speedrun thread) and my dt03 gearbox was absolutely fine, they're strong as. They're 0.8, but I use steel 32dp (😬) as they're close enough, and cheaper.... -Have noticed the DT04 has 12mm hex front wheels, so at least we should be able to (fairly) cheaply convert the 02/03 that look to share the same front wishbones ,to 12mm front hex (I've the RB5 on mine...).
-
It's a strong reliable (presumably cheap) gearbox! 🤷♂️ But isn't upto what other manufacturers are offering (ie, no slipper for modern brushless), and Tamiya doesn't like change (so probably ave the cheese pinion, and won't have bearings either..).
-
A 2005 DT02 gearbox, (which means no slipper option), familiar looking front wishbones, (02/03?). Maybe look at a DT04 chassis ,and swap my DT03 parts over? Although, it's priced not bad tbh - https://www.modelsport.co.uk/product/tamiya-fighter-nxgen-dt-04-1369259

How I understand it.. In Sensorless, the esc guesstimates motor rotation ,based on the none energised coil, sending a small voltage back to it (when you pass a magnet over a coil, it produces electricity). When the motor first starts, the esc looks for this signal to make sure its going the correct direction. Normally you don't really notice as it's milliseconds, but if the battery can't provide the oomph and/or tall gearing ,it stutters, or 'cogs' as it searches for position. The motors are measured in KV, which is RPM per volt (unloaded). Sensored use a 360° position sensor/encoder on the end of the motor, this tells the esc exactly where to motor position is, so zero guesswork, and smooth running from zero rpm. As the esc knows the exact motor position, you can (depending on the esc) add controlled motor timing through the rev range (boost) and/or at full throttle (turbo) to almost double the 'KV' of the standard motor if desired. The sensor and extra esc capabilities, means the sensored is more expensive though.. As mentioned, there's the finned 540 motors, that have the RPM of brushless, but not a great deal of torque. I run a 4370kv 9T Skyrc Leopard set up in a Lunchbox (with a steel Hornet pinion, to take some bite out)

If it was quick and good value, Racers would run them, but when you have to spend another pocket of cash to get them race ready, it puts them up at a tried and tested race car!! 🤷♂️ Putting the TD4 was up against Kyosho's Optima Mid price wise 🤦♂️ there's only one winner there imo...

Full scale car projects?
Wooders28 replied to Wooders28's topic in Anything not RC related goes here
Not done much since the last update. Life's twists and turns means a shift in priorities. I was working over Christmas, and with no gaffers about, got a bit done on the boot lid. The 'mint' boot lid I'd bought didn't turn out to be as mint as I thought, (top right) So that got cut out and welded up Layed on some Epoxy primer, and left to cure ( 7 days at 30°c apparently...but workshop heater on full beans for a week it had to be) Given it wasn't the most hygienic/dust free environment, didn't turn-out too bad! So, the reason I've only painted inside the boot lid, is that I've had the idea to use it as a kind of canvass, and have it on an easel, then people can sign it at my 50th do coming up. I'll have a reminder each time I go in the boot, as alot of my family are now mid + 80's, so realised some may not see the thing running..🥺 My eldest (just 10), wanted to be the first to draw something on it, she's loves drawing, and is really really good (slight bias..🙄😁), she's done not bad 👏 -
Bad timing on Tamiyas part imo. A quirky car, at race car money meant it probably wasn't going to fly off the shelves in the current cost of g̶r̶e̶e̶d̶ living crisis. Thing of beauty Rick! 😀 I'm hoping the Optima Mid Custom / special chassis is re released, with shorty compatibility, although aye, maybe a little lottery win to help things move along wouldn't go a miss..

The TD4 48dp slipper spur fits straight onto the DF03 slipper? Handy to know!! (Did buy pretty much all the tamiya pinions in 05 mod for it though.. ) Also, handy (ish) conversion chart, from dp to mod -

I think the media has some baring on attitudes, mainly as they dramatise everything ,to make a story to sell papers (or get clicks, whatever it is these days), and anyone that's ever written an article will tend to do that (I remember going to a car show, and a mate/ editor of a then popular car mag asked me to 'just do a quick report' for him, which suddenly goes from , 'wandered around the show field looking at a few old cars', to ' a huge eclectic diverse mix of automotive heaven'..) Governments aren't in it for the long haul, they could be out on their ear come next election time, so in the relatively short term, just try and please the masses, I think Chris Packham has been quite vocal about the COP meetings, and how pretty much unless they've been. This kind of sums my feeling about governments, just in general tbh... I'm not about to start living in a tunnel or a tree protesting like Swampy (UK version of Greta, just not quite as famous..). We've become a world of planned obsolescence, all our goods are designed to fail, manufacturing depends on people buying new stuff, which in most cases its the manufacture that has the most emissions, I try and do my bit on that, I've only had 2 cars this century (technically 3, but one of them has been in bits most of the time I've owned it, so more of an ornament, although it has had the engine upgraded to a more modern, more efficient version..), repair as much as I can (still 2 dehumidifiers in the garage, waiting on parts etc etc). This planned obsolescence also creates alot of unnecessary waste , and surely we can't just keep throwing it to one side and hope it disappears.. Can you imagine if the world was a bedroom ,and all the waste just got dumped under the rug, or just pushed to the side and hoped it magically disappeared... I can, as I had a lodger that did just that... (And it ain't orange juice in the bottles 🤢) Humans are intelligent animals, but also stubborn, so its going to be a good while before we do anything significant about our excessive emissions and waste, probably not in my lifetime. We're just too addicted to, 'stuff'. Scotland is seemingly ahead of the game, actually making surplus renewable electricity (we've literally just had 3 phase electricity fitted for free by the local council, although an electric car isn't really any use to me atm, it might be in the future).

Surely The Hornet has to be up there!! Not sure if it's because it looks to be going fast, or that it's got a bit of the JPS vibe of the time?

Kind of... Started a project thread in the 'Anything not RC ' section a while back, if you want to add some pics of yours @MadAnt -

As modern 2.4 systems go, it's not overflowing with features, but probably all you'd need ! https://www.racing-cars.com/radio-gear/radio-sets/sanwa-gemini-sport-radio-set-with-rx391w-sa101a32871a?returnurl=%2fradio-gear%2fradio-sets%2f

Mulling over a return to Nihm… thoughts?
Wooders28 replied to njmlondon's topic in All things electric...
Most car batteries are around 4-500amp cold test current, so if you've a decent C rated 3s (5000mah, 100C/200C + ) , should do. -

Think there is something that new, with Ceefax! But the one my dad was still using before he went into hospital in at the start of the year, was this Ferguson 240/12v telly (with a digital box), a remote the size of a smart phone, with 3 buttons , we bought it around 1981 (when we got a static caravan, hence the 240/12v) Modern day Nicad... -

They're worth something? Think there's a few in my dad's garage, I've been meaning to take the tip!! 😳 -

I was... I gave all mine away in the end, it's like going back to CRT telly ,after getting used to 4K. -
I don't think there's a great difference in costs, but, I've imported a good bit from the States (to the point I was investigated by HMRC...), and always pay Import duty and VAT on the goods Inc postage. So you actually pay tax ON tax.. Goods Inc postage + 10% Import duty + 20% VAT then a £12 Parcelfarce handling charge if you're really lucky...(or £25 if you've ordered a fair bit) So if the goods Inc shipping is £100, duty is £10, making £110, then 20% on £110 + 20% = £132 + £12 , so a grand total of £144, on something that could have been £50 if its heavy....(like a diff ring gear 🙄)

Full scale car projects?
Wooders28 replied to Wooders28's topic in Anything not RC related goes here
This is his website (although, I'd have cleaned up the welds, before adding the picture...) https://yorkshire-classic-cars.co.uk/custom-work Jury's out on simpler .... can take ages to jet it all right ,for when the boost comes in, where injection you can have the ECU add fuel based on the wide band controller. Easier to fit ,if you're already on carb right enough. Think Jim and the green Tina estate had around 450-500 (head work, cam etc ,but mostly a 2 stage nitrous hit), so should go well, and be fairly reliable and more importantly, fun at 300! 😁👍 -

Superb!! Have you spoken to Dougie (that Turbo Rover Capri), at Yorkshire Classic Cars? https://www.facebook.com/100063727865753/posts/pfbid02i2wqegDfVhZchCop8xi4B549DugQho3TZbuKc2f8c9iedkuAsb3AayG2kxFiz1w2l/?app=fbl He's gone with Megasquirt though, so presumably running injection. (Random, but Tina estate guy has started his own ECU company - https://www.axiomefi.com/?fbclid=IwY2xjawGysbVleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHTUee3IMdFX8p33R5P83p0MywnwDRefGeWiXdfHcN0nc1tyB4fuFK06-8g_aem_aPN67s0gD-AIu5ZJT_8AqA Tick over was a bit high, and open headers meant it was a bit noisy....😏 I went with a Comp Cams 276 cam (110° is pretty much the highest LSA I can go, with the long TPI intake runners), and managed to find a similar engine, with a similar Magnaflow X pipe exhaust on YouTube, so hoping this is what it'll sound like....maybe 🫣 Life's ups and down, has meant I've not done a great deal on mine of late 😔, although I'm hoping to get bits done Christmas week in work, with no gaffers kicking about...🤫) -
As it was generally sponsored guys, with the top elecs, who could obviously drive well. So no matter what race chassis they had, they'd probably win/be quick. Cheers ! I used to love the T Shirt, but not sure what happened to it tbh, I have a feeling I wore it to shreads, and it didn't return from the washing basket one day.. 😔
