  1. Back in the 80's I tried my hand at racing a frog, but got sick of stripping the female splines off the bevel gears in the diff and/or the male splines on the drive shafts. If I remember right, they have to be bought separately (of course!)

Dont know if there are any RE models that share the same set up that may have resolved the issue.

  2. Ukfox - under the stairs in our house consists of stacks of bog roll, and aerosols of polish and air fresheners, would be like guy fawkes night if there was a problem!

Dualdigger- puts my mind at rest that someone in the Arctic circle leaves them in the garage.

Guess I should not really worry about my RC batteries and worry about my daily driver battery!!

  3. I am in Scotland, the temperature hasn't dropped too far this year, only dipped to around -6c.

The bits I have read on the www are conflicting, some people saying that they store them in the freezer (most saying in the fridge, but I am only concerned about subzero). The lipo 'fact' pages say freezing will certainly damage them.

As my wife refuses to have them in the house because of a fire risk (after she disconnected one from the charger by pulling both the male banana plugs out of the charger as it was beeping!!!!) I may just sneak them into the loft until temps rise in a few months.

  4. After having my daily driver struggle to start after a couple of days without use in the subzero temperatures, this got me thinking.

Will my lipos (or the nicad/nimh for that matter) suffer being stored in the equally subzero temperatures in my garage?

They have been charged to storage and in a safe sack.

  5. Its a shame high street model shops are closing,I try and use local shops as much as I can,but they only carry limited stock so I generally only walk away with a couple of rattle cans.

I used to say in the northwest, there where indoor tracks, outdoor tracks and even had a RC club in school where they let us use the school hall! I know the outdoor in Southport is now a permanent track (along with a model boating lake and stream train track) but the indoor is derelict.

What i don't see now are kids the cars in carparks etc, inside with PlayStation Xbox etc?

You can find a list of local clubs online,I have found my local (ish) club, but life keeps getting in the way and I haven't actually made it yet!

  6. Beatties where good places to hang out while mum was shopping.Saved all my pocket money and paper round money to buy the original ultima (sorry!) I saw in the window. They had sold out when I went to buy it!!

Ended up getting it from Otley modelsport.

  7. The flaw of the DF-03 is a weak aluminium gear or shaft somewhere in the driveline. TA-Mark mentioned an aftermarket steel hop-up part back then, but it is not available anymore and might be very hard to find nowadays.

Judging from that, I'd say you might want to stay away from this type of chassis. Tamiya themselves do not produce any new models on it and thus I think that's a tell-tale sign of fading parts support for the DF-03.

If you like to, please have a read on these articles:

UltimateRC: http://www.ultimatetamiya.com/buggies/df03/dark-impact/ (from a racer's perspective with thoughts about durability and handling)

Blackholesun: http://www.blackholesun.fr/RC_DarkImpact_US.php (from a basher's and vintage RC car driver's perspective)

Aside from that, there've been some read-worthy threads on the DF-03 and DF-03MS in the past two years on Tamiyaclub's forums.

The mod for the main shaft is still going strong a year later (quick year!)

Broken wishbones, drive shafts, bent shocks and snapped the gearbox off the chassis (chassis broke not the GB), but the internals are fine.

Chassis doesn't really like 5700 brushless and 3s power.

  8. Not used one for a while.

Try veg oil in the body first and then drain, pour in your modeling plaster slowly and try not to get bubbles , leave to dry, (I used to do overnight), drill holes (1mm or less) in any recess so the vacuum can pull it down.

You want the lexan / plastic as soft, but too much as it will bubble and burn, so a bit of trail and error.

There's a couple of vids on YouTube with homemade ones.

  9. Unless you back onto a field or main road,I would say it's someone local, and youngish,Keep an eye out at local playgrounds/football pitches/beach etc.Good call about searching eBay by distance.A long shot but,I would put in your watch list any suitable bodyshells and if possible see who wins it,see if they are local! (if that's still possible?) Or even sell a bodyshell with free delivery and get the ******s address!

  10. So are you the proud owner of a hilux? :-)

I use Facebook all the time, friends in the forces, keep in touch with family (knowone lives close to anyone, not even in the same country!)etc. You need to keep on top of security settings etc,but it can be a pain. It's worrying the amount of info a smart phone can transmit via apps,007 would be proud!!
