  1. Has anyone got any experience with tamiya TBLM 02 brushless motors?  I was wondering how they compare with other brands.  I'm looking for a 17.5t for my M07 to replace the 21t core rc brushed motor that I'm currently running.

  2. I've just finished the shell I recently bought.  I'm happy with it for its intended use which will be racing, it feels strong and has enough detail to look good going round a track. The decals, however, were completely useless.  Fortunately id sprayed the grille silver as the decal had no adhesion at all and fell straight off.

  3. I ordered with them for the first time last week.  I got the 225mm mini pick up,  I'm very happy with it, it's better than I was expecting.  It's not got the same level of detail as a tamiya shell but has more detail than the Phat bodies shell I had before.  I have also been happy with the phat bodies shell, although not as detailed it is very durable.

How did you get the grey outer rim so cleanly painted? Did you mask off the chrome centre? Looks great - i have the same set of wheels for a project that I wanted to paint the same way

Thanks. Yes, I masked off the centre, push the tape down nice and tight using a finger nail to get the tape to follow the shape. then cut round the hub cap part with a sharp knife.  I think that wheel was core RC shark grey polycarbonate paint.

  5. The only wheels I've ever broken have been the chrome type, is there something in the manufacturing process that makes them more brittle or have i just had bad luck with them?

I want some m chassis beetle style wheels for a project but as it will be raced i need them to be fairly strong.  I'm wondering if the type used on the mini lunchbox would be less brittle. I'd need to paint them unless anyone knows if they are made in any other colour other than chrome or yellow.

    Thanks

    Well, bit of an update.

Did some late night browsing and ended up finding a Fire Dragon in stock and significantly cheaper than else where. Like £45 quid cheaper. They also had a Manta Ray in stock which was also £5 cheaper than I'd seen elsewhere. So I ended up ordering both! :o

Ordered up some bearings from RCBearings this morning and the metal A5 part for the Fire Dragon.

Is there any "must" have upgrades for the Manta Ray that I should consider before building?

Someone mentioned the Delrin gearbox gears, assume it is these: https://www.modelsport.co.uk/product/xtra-speed-delrin-gearbox-gear-for-tamiya-ta01-ta02-top-force-1358300

Assume I'd need 2 sets of gears or does one set do the entire car?

That's the delrin gear set I ordered, you just need the one set. I also ordered an aluminum motor mount, can't remember what brand but it was about £10.  I'd also get steel pinions for both cars, just check the pitch as they are different.

Most likely to run on grass. Although length can vary. What is the A5 being mentioned? I assume it is part A5 during assembly?

Do you have a link at all? Thanks.

Yes it's part A5, it links the front arms to the gearbox.  I fitted the Xtra speed aluminium replacement, my only complaint is that there was a bit of slop in it where the hinge pins pass through.  I ended up drilling and sleeving it.  There is also an A5 reinforcing plate that fits on top of the kit A5 plastic part.  This would work just as well.

  8. I dont have either of those but i do have have a terra scorcher and a top force which are very similar to your choices.  The top force has better handling and is very easy to drive. The terra scorcher is very good on longer grass and rough gravel as it has more ground clearance. They are both great cars but if I could only pick one I'd probably go for the Manta Ray.

I fitted aluminum A5 part to the terra scorcher and it has been very reliable and nothing has broken yet.

The Top force is newer so I can't comment on reliability but I fitted aluminum motor mount and swapped the aluminum idler gear for the delrin version.

  9. I've been setting my M05 up for racing following a guide I found online.  I upgraded to the super mini CVAs which has transformed the handling from the old friction shocks.

I have the 53333 tuned spring set that I'd like to try but the springs seem too short.  Do I make up the difference with the preload collars or should I be limiting the stroke with internal spacers?

The club I will be going to race on carpet so any other tips will be appreciated.

This was running at the track meet today. Was so cool and so nice to look at.

J Concepts wheels and tyres, stock Blackfoot body, rocker shock delete.

Thanks for posting, another great day as usual at the tamiya junkies meet.   I always come back from these meets with a list of jobs I want to do on each car.  On the list for this car:

    Reduce rear steering

Try sport tuned motor (currently has torque tuned)

    Get lexan body for running.

  11. I was considering a Top Force for my next build but having seen that the Manta ray will be reissued I'm having second thoughts. I like the FRP chassis on the Top force but does it actually perform much better than the Manta ray? Also which is more durable? I'm trying to work out if it's worth the extra £100 to me.

I already own a terra scorcher and don't really want another buggy that's the same to drive, is there much difference in how they perform?

I'd love to hear of any thoughts or experiences of these buggies.

  12. I'll be 45 this year and currently don't really feel much different physically from when I was 25 although I have noticed close up eyesight isn't so good any more.  Out of all my hobbies I consider this one the easiest to maintain into old age. I have changed how I think about this hobby though, when I got back into it in the early 2000's I mostly had shelf queens.  Now I run all of my models as I thought why keep them pristine for someone else and miss out on the fun of running them.  I sold anything that was rare or collectable and limit myself to owning about 15 Rc's at a time.  When anything happens to me I'd like to think they'll end up with an enthusiast but I've had my fun out of them and that's the important thing.

It's funny how perception of age changes, when I got into the hobby aged 10 I probably thought 30 was old and never would imagine I'd still be playing with RCs in my 40s.  Now I don't see 60's as old and hope I'll still be playing with them then.

In terms of branded stuff, it's hard to go wrong with any of them, IMO.  IIRC I've never run any HPI car, the Venture was popular a while back, I think HPI's continual financial struggles puts me off but maybe things are more stable now, I have no idea.

I like my MST CFX-W, I think we discussed before that MST parts in the UK are hard to find, so you have to import from Asiatees or Europe.  I fitted cheap solid propshafts, Proline tyres and the shorter shock set, but otherwise it's great out of the box.

G-made BOM - you can read my thread for all my trials and tribulations with this kit, but seriously, since I've got the shocks sorted, it's been awesome.  I've never broken anything on it (although I might have bent am axle shaft, I need to check why the wheel is wobbling) and it's got a very neat transmission.  Mine is on the earlier chassis, the later version has a 2-speed transmission, arch liners and looks different.  The included tyres with the BOM are fantastic.  Not sure what UK parts are like.

Axial SCX10 - mine is absolutely ancient but still going strong, I don't think I've ever broken anything on it.  I think the SCX10-II builders kit is still around, the SCX10-III has more features.

I've never owned a Traxxas crawler but those who own them love them, TRX-4 Sport Kit (with fewer features and a generic body) and full-fat builder's kits are available.

Carisma seem to be priced a little lower and more towards the scale end of the market, but they do look good.  I've never owned, built or driven one.

SMD had a neat CRX Pug 504 kit in stock at the Nationals at a competitive price, looked like a very detailed kit and a leftfield choice for the body.  I was so taken with it I very almost bought one.

IMO the world is your oyster - if you can afford a brand-name truck, I don't think you'll get a bad one - although as with anything you'll probably want to spend on it as soon as it hits the trails, because nothing ever seems to be quite right out of the box (tyres being the main problem on the trucks I've bought).

Thanks for the detailed reply, that gives me plenty to look into.

It's a very good option if you want to add your own flair.  I've not driven a stock Element that much (my daughter's one has barely been used) but they're a great build, super-smooth transmission and the shocks are like butter.  You get a proper shock that actually works, unlike most other crawler kits.  IMO the only build quality issue is the smaller screws for the diff - buy a tap, and replace the little screws with stainless.

The axles are quite wide too, so works better with a bigger body.

Thanks for the info, are there any others you could recommend?  I also like the look of the HPI venture builders kit which is a bit cheaper than the element.  My main requirements are that I want a kit not RTR and have good spares availability.

I'd been alone most of the day, but at this point I bumped into fellow TC member, who I'd met a couple of weeks back at the Tamiya Junkies meet.  He was pitting his CFX FJ against the terrain, so we decided to tackle the course together.  This is one of the best bits of the Nationals - meeting random people on the trail and joining up to beat it together.

Great write up, this was me with the mst cfx land cruiser.

I'm glad you told me about this event at the Junkies meet.  I'd never done a crawler/ scaler type event before but really enjoyed it and will definitely go again. I've done a bit of research and found a place in nottingham called Springwoods RC which also looks worth a visit.

The CFX has been on my workbench since I got back as I'm doing a few mods which will hopefully make it even better next time.
