  1. Odd as it sounds, MSCs were one one those things (among many) that taught me to respect machinery and equipment as a kid. You did have to be wary of them and have your wits about you (turning on the transmitter first and last etc.) I never had an issue with Tamiya ones. And yes Hib, I liked going to the hobby shop and buying a Hornet or Wild One speed controller. As I remember they were the ones touted for having the BEC connector. I could always "revive" a worn Tamiya MSC. Now other brands like Marui... eh, not so much. We used to call them spot welder specials. I totally agree that for practical purposes, the ESC is better.

  2. I know this is going to sound crazy to most folks, but part of me misses mechanical speed controllers. Yes, I totally agree ESCs are better in almost every way but still... there's a certain vintage charm MSCs have that bring me back to my youth. It brings back old driving techniques not have brakes to bail you out if you go too hot into a turn. Those hot resistors with their metal shields take me back (caution hot! lol). Just the simple mechanical part of it without the mystery of what goes on in that little ESC box is fun to watch. Best of all, none of that ESC "sqeeeeeeee" noise at low speed. I know I'm crazy and probably on my own with this one ;) .

  3. Its so tempting but sooo expensive. I never ran my Avante re-re because it was such a work of art. I'm afraid I might do the same with the Egress once completed. I also have a pile of parts to start putting together a semi-Top Force Evo clone but the Egress is just more unique.

  4. Thorp diffs often had issues with them loosening with use. The hobby shop by me actually suggested gacking the center screw's threads with pliers to make it a "lock" screw. I recall Thorp began actually using screws with a slight bend in them to keep them from backing out. That being said, the stock parts aren't all that bad. They hold up just fine under power when used in the Hot Shot series' gear cases. The Monster Beetle (and all 1st gen ORV-based trucks) is the worst scenario. Big tires (higher load) + the least supportive gearcase = skipping diff gears. The Oldfrogshot screw mod is by far the best method to keep things in order, but I've also seem gearcase side plate reinforcing methods work well too. As I've stated years earlier, I'm not convinced the ORV gear box was originally designed to house a diff at all and thus lacks the proper support. The original Brat and Lancia had solid gears and were introduced before diffs were standard in off-road (the SRBs and first Scorpion didn't have diffs). The small diff gears (due to the size constraints of the gearbox) might have been simply added-in after the fact when the Frog was introduced (as it was the fully hopped up/competition version of the ORV chassis).

  5. Bummer. I was afraid the old slipping diff gears would return. I'd gotten lucky with my Frog and FAV but the Beetle's big tires must have pushed the design over the edge just like the old days. Oh well, at least there's a few fixes out there even if Thorp parts are so expensive now. Also, has anybody else noticed how soft the tires are? The compound is almost Lunch Box-soft. I know the originals were harder as well as the versions included on my Twin Detonator 10 years ago.

  6. From my recollection, Most Marui models were out of stores by 1990 (or at least not listed in ads). Somewhere around '90-'91 an ad showed up in RC Car Action depicting the Big Bear in white and neon colors. It listed the previously mentioned upgrades to fix the issues that plagued the earlier Big Bear like the "instant toast" MSC, shredding diff and smaller 480 motor. The company at the bottom of the article was listed as Phoenix Models/Tokyo Marui. Car Action actually reviewed the model again in its new form despite having already reviewed the original many years earlier. I also recall them mentioning better parts availability and publishing other ads with spare parts list and prices on them.

  7. I've been debating getting a vintage or re-re Egress as a runner. Back in the late 80's I had a Vanquish but can't quite remember how it ran. What's an Egress like as a runner? Is it a rewarding/fun experience? I idolized the Egress (and Avante) back then as the ultimate in Tamiya performance. I run strictly vintage/re-re vehicles now as newer ones just don't invoke any passion in how they go about their business. Thanks for any insight.

  8. I've done this conversion and tinkered with the gearbox pivots. I vaguely remember the slotted pivots actually extended the wheelbase a bit over the fixed Grasshopper pivots if that matters to you. The end result of the conversion is much more bouncey than the stock Lunch Box. It really reminded me of my old Marui Super Wheelie Land Cruiser.

  9. I think it might have been a Clod Buster. Someone brought it in to the local hobby shop to have the steering checked out. The clerk put it on the ground in the shop and drove it down an aisle. I remember, even in the shop, it was much faster than the Nikko vehicles I had. At the end of the aisle, the clerk cranked the wheel and the Clod steered around in a long drunken arc crashing into (and knocking over) an endcap shelf display in the process. Oops.

  10. As others have stated, I don't think the lack of a proper Technigold will hinder Tamiya if the wish to re-re the Big Wig. Both the Avante and Super Shot have proven this. Tamiya seems to be more willing of late to stray a bit further from the original models to appease collectors (the mirrors and extra holes in the Monster Beetle's shell for example). The Top Force was Tamiya's 100th car and they didn't hesitate to re-re it. I think it all comes down to money in the end. If they see profit in it, we'll see it.

  11. Hello all. I've have posted on Tamiyaclub for many years. About two weeks ago my I was not automatically logged in when I entered the site. I typed in my user name (Saito) and my password which I had written down. For some reason it was deemed invalid. I've have used it in the past with no issues. Is there anyway I can get my original user name and stats back? I still have the original password to verify my idenity but the original email account I signed up with many years ago is long gone. Can anything be done? Thanks.
