  1. The loctite I am using is red 271. I am going to run the tap down the hole once again with an alcohol chaser and wire brush the screw with the same. I think the viscosity might be an issue as the loctite seems to be sitting on the surface of the screw and on running it into the hole it is being wiped off. I am also having a difficult time getting it in the hole as the opening is so small. I am going to try and wick it into the hole with a toothpick. I am trying to accomplish the oldfrogshot mod on my diff for my blackfoot. I am using a 4/40 screw and the appropriate tap. The first time I did it it held for about 5 minutes before breaking free and I was amazed at the difference it made in my truck. I just cant justify spending 150.00 for a Thorp ball diff when if the mod is done successfully it removes the problem of the diff spreading.
  2. The loctite is brand new. I tried the permatex brand first and it didnt work. I removed the items and cleaned them as best as I could then put it back together. I did wait the full 24 hours and it still was not locked tight. I will take it apart and try to clean it once more and make sure I clear the threaded hole with the tap dry or rinsed with alcohol. I did not feel the threads were loose but that might be part of the issue.
  3. I am truly green when it comes to this hobby and I have found a wealth of information on this forum. I am however having quite an issue with something I would assume to be a simple operation. I uncovered my old Blackfoot that I parked back in the 80's due to a diff that just would not hold up. I ran across the oldfrogshot diff mod and decided it would be worth giving a shot as I had a blast with my truck until I put a Trinity Pink label Monster horsepower motor on it and it started eating diff gears. I am on my second go round of trying to use Red Loctite and am at a loss as to why I can not get the stuff to cure. I find it difficult to truly clean the surfaces as the hole to be quite honest is very small. I have shot it with carb and choke cleaner and Maf cleaner as those were products I had on hand. I also used rubbing alcohol to clean the threaded hole and the new screw before assembling. I have attempted to drip Loctite in to the threaded hole but find it difficult to get it to break the surface tension as it just sits in a bubble at the opening. I also applied it to the threads of the screw before assembly. I do not think the threads are excessively loose and on the second application I found more resistance as I tightened the screw in to the hole. I would love any tips secrets or pointers as to any tricks to getting this stuff to work. I have even considered putting the diff in the oven for a few hours at 100 degrees as I read somewhere this speeds the cure time. I worry it may damage some of the components though.
  4. Thanks for the info. I actually did have the spur gear in backwards which I discovered at around 1 am while I was beating my head against the wall trying to figure out what on earth I was doing wrong. Thank god for the internet and pdf manuals. I'm waiting on lock tite to cure and then I am going to give this thing a whirl and see if its worth continuing with the build. I was looking for those shocks and would you have any idea if they are the same ones they use for the Rustler and Stampede ? Those are in stock at the local shop at a very reasonable price.
  5. Great job on that project. I just discovered my old Blackfoot in the attic and started tinkering with it. I remember I parked it do to the diff giving me such a hard time. I discovered the oldfrogshot mod and I am in the middle of trying to give that a whirl. I'm afraid the diff is still giving me badword. I just cant seem to get it operating smoothly. Maybe I'm not holding my mouth right or something. I think the plates may be slightly bent which is causing binding when I tighten the case bolts down. I was wondering also which Traxxas shocks you are using on this thing. I'm looking to upgrade and it would be awesome if I could get Traxxas as they are usually stocked at the local Hobbytown.
