A fantastic thread and 2 GH saved!
Really nice that you worked on these with your dad and saved so much of the original RC’s 👏

Small amount of progress this morning, battery stops, and tyres now correctly fitted , rear body posts flipped round.
Herbie body shell delivered by @Busdriveryesterday - traded for a couple of pints of Guinness 😂
Electrics next and I’ll order some body posts.
An 8 yard skip arrived today at home, so there be no Tamiya for a bit 😳

These are all excellent tips, exactly the advice and help I was hoping for, thank you 👍
I suspect hop ups and after market upgrades are going to be hard to source now, carbon shock towers and sway bars maybe have to wait, everything else is easily doable though.
Both chassis’s have been set up LWB, as the plan is to run one as a Beetle and the 2nd chassis is either going to be sold or it will have a Karmann Ghia shell.
These are most modern chassis’s I have pulled apart and put back together, I’ve enjoyed the process and felt I’ve learnt some new stuff along the way.
I’m looking forward to running it now and setting it up using the advice shared.

I bought these 2 from my mate @Busdriver very recently.
Having now stripped them down, cleaned, and replaced any missing or broken parts they are almost ready to run.
I get the M-06 is not a great favourite, but any tips on how to get the best out of them?
I’ll probably go no better than silver cans or TT motors and both chassis’ have bearings and CVA’s already.
I still use NiMH and we are talking about light car park duty, I’ve got servos and ESC’s as well.
They both have AW grease in the diffs too.
Any tips welcome on set up or hops ups 👍

Good evening!
17 years after its first release I started building a CR-01, just for curiosity reasons, but I will see where it leads me. Against the recommendation in the manual, I started with the transmission. Because this interested me the most.
Those are the largest ballbearings I've ever seen in a Tamiya model until this day. 24mm by 15mm. "Weird ... weird ..." (as an [in]famous actress stated recently):
Something I don't like with Tamiya kits is, when I cannot replace a screw with allen head ot torx. These screws have quite flat heads:
I decided to change some bearings in the kit for rubber sealed ones. Especially the bearings located at the outsides of the transmission:
"To grease or not to grease, this is the question!" I've seen lot of people not greasing the motor pinion / counter gear location. I am a bit torn:
The transmission is done so far. Looking interesting and was interesting to build:
I found setting the mesh between the motor pinion and the counter gear a bit tricky due to two slot holes. I prefer one normal hole as a pivot point and a circular slot hole for this task. Anyway, it's not impossible to do. I find the transmission quite bulky for a model that size. Axial showed even in 2007 how small a crawler transmission can be.
You don’t grease the XV-01 and it is perfect.

Thanks for the tip - I think this is beyond my skill set and I don't have a lathe. I think I have some original front axles somewhere.
MK2 SRB’s are the best uprights to use 👍

Received a few Tamiya spares in the post; blue flanged wheel lock nuts, snap pins, fluorine ball connectors, 2x10mm shafts.
Drilled out and replaced a snapped steering upgrade kit ball connector atop one of my TT02D’s wheel knuckles after it ran through a dip in the road and a ball head snapped off leaving the thread embedded... New ball connector seems tight but super glued the thread in to help it stay put.
Dunno why Tamiya’s ball connectors are soft alu and why replacement TT02D A tree’s don’t seem available so I can get a replacement wheel knuckle - according to the forums I consulted they’re different geometry to the standard TT02 A tree knuckles, yet apparently Yeah Racing’s generic TT02 knuckle upgrades will work with TT02D (might try them out). Go figure…
Looks great!
I’m pretty sure the TT02D has been recently discontinued.

Time Tunnel have it at the reduced price as well now @ £199.00 inc delivery.

Shock cylinders
Shocks rods
Chassis cover
Wheels & tyres.
These are the differences.
@Andreas W is also correct about the Pro shock towers being included in RS kit.

There is the normally cheaper XV-02 Pro as well with taller ground clearance. The thing is that the RS pro has the stiffer reinforced chassis and I think you get the taller shock towers on the sprue of the RS Pro, so it's simple to convert the RS Pro for both applications than the Pro. You simply get more of the good stuff with the RS Pro.
Normally the normal Pro is a good bit cheaper, so this offer is really good as I see it.
I guess then after that the difference between the kits, the are tyres and shocks?
Just found the existing excellent TC thread - which tells me what I wanted to know 👍 -

That’s looks like a very nice piece of kit.
Is there just the one XV-02 variant?
How would you increase the ground clearance for off roading?I can see there’s a more rally based model - Pro with greater ground clearance, but quite a lot higher in price @ £329.00

A gorgeous collection @barneys66.
You and I have very similar taste in Tamiya and I also know how thorough and skilful @jonboy1 restos are.
Hope the selling goes well and the new owners go onto to enjoy these classic Tamiya as much as you have 👍

You can Rite dye these wheels I suspect.
BITD I changed a set of yellow Holiday Buggy wheels to black using Rite dye and they turned out really well.

I’m up for this any of the above locations would work with me.
I currently have 2 runners an XV01 and Blitzer Beetle, count me in for off road or on road 👍

and the prize for randomly reviving the oldest thread go to.......
Thanks @jonboy1, hope all is well with you buddy 🙂
The question came up on Sunday in a chat with a fellow rc’er and a Google search lead me to this thread!
What’s your thoughts on this question then?
I went with ‘Yes, the SC is an SRB’.

Great thread - my vote would have been SRB.
But I’d say like the revised BMW E36 M3 - a Super Champ is an Evolution SRB 👍

Finally, on with the upper deck and she's back up on wheels! The red countersunk screws all fit really nicely
And a look at the underside and more of those red countersunk screws
Only downside is...she's got tan lines

So the carbon fibre chassis plates are a vintage part, and I can only assume that the way this one has been stored for however many years means that the upper deck has left a pattern mark on the lower deck from their years spent strapped together
. Obviously I bought it from a Japanese Auction about two years ago so there's not much I can do about it, it'll just have to be a little quirk!
When I was collecting all the red hardware together a couple of years ago I couldn't find any red 25mm or 16mm countersunk screws for mounting the battery frame and front of the gearbox, but I have found some this morning that will be on their way from Japan soon. They'll finish it off really nicely, it'll look much better with all red screw-heads in the lower deck
Wow, gorgeous!

This was a TC recommendation a few years back - pretty sure you can only use it on metal parts -
