  1. This is a post to pass on some details about the failing health of TC member VINTAGE NUT

Howdy fellow TC members. I was getting back into some Tamiya things at the beginning of this year, but once again have found little time to follow through with anything substantial in building or even organizing. Besides that point, I had recontacted Lee Collins AKA VINTAGE NUT here on TC. He and I were figuring out what I would need to get my vintage Hilux back in action and he started to look for the few bits I need. Well, fast forward to just about a week ago and I had not been in too much contact with him for much of March. It would seem he didn't forget about me, but rather he had a 3 week stay at hospital. It isn't looking great, he had one lung removed many years ago and his final lung isn't doing well these days. He has given up "feeling sick" and taking treatment, so it could only be just a matter of time before he is gone from here on Earth.

I don't know where to actually put this other than OUT HERE in the forums and I hope if you feel so moved, perhaps you can send him an email message via TC mail or directly to his email at

    nitrotoyshobbies@bellsouth.net

    Best of intentions and regards,
    Chris aka CrashCramer

Special thanks to my good friend @Crash Cramer for sending me these fantastic items! And in the box (but not in the picture) there was also a cool FARMALL tshirt!

THANK YOU CHRIS!, you know I always thought how cool the MRP Black Knight decals were, it's amazing I finally have one myself to work some custom :D

You all have a good Wednesday! :)

Glad it all showed up there.

Managed to collect a Toyota Hilux in my 1:1 car's rear bumper in traffic today.  When I came home to find some PS paint waiting for me I took it as a sign from the universe that I have cars that need painting.

I'm  a bit confused about collecting a Hilux in your 1:1 bumper, but what happened Tamiya, you forgot to give us the PS # on that Gray paint???

Thanks Crash :) I can't tell you how glad I am to have finally found the screen - I thought it was never going to happen!

Will I drive it? I will give it a very gentle test around the living room without the body, just to check the servo's respond correctly etc, but other than that - no. I'm going to leave that enjoyment for the original owner who I was going to gift it back to. :)

Well now, I must have missed that note about the end user. That is some great work for someone else you have done and I pretty sure they will be over the moon about it. It makes me remember my gift of a FJ40 to my best man quite a number of years ago, in fact, so many years ago that Tamiya didn't even make it as a kit, I bought the body from Proline and fitted it with help from other TC examples onto a TA02 chassis, 2006 to be exact as I just revisited my own post in my showroom. I admit to giving my finished product more than a servo check indoors, but what he doesn't know wont hurt him. :P

My parents simply couldn't afford to buy me rc cars when i was a kid. Only now can i afford to indulge my childhood fantasy. This is and always has been a problem for a lot of youngsters who would otherwise like to get involved in our hobby.

Ditto on this, I won't say they couldn't afford it as much as they WOULDN'T afford it, I had to earn my first one and it could have been a reason I longed for and still long for something to build/rebuild/repair/enjoy.I agree with the other member talking of the fragility of the RTR that were available to us in the 80's, ever the Arrow buggies from Radio Shack could be repaired to a degree, but they were RTR and fragile all the same. The newer RTR are much more robust than 30 years ago, some of that is due to better plastics and then there are others factors too, but regardless, this hobby IS NOT FOR KIDS who have little to no income to keep something running no matter how gentle they treat it when the adrenaline of racing gets you going over curbs and BMX jumps etc.

You clearly don't know the first rule of Tamiyaclub.

I had a good laugh at this, but it is quite a thought that EVERYONE should have heard of TC by now, but I guarantee you there are scores of USA folks that don't know about it at all.

Now onto my own twocents worth of useless opinion, it may or may not keep going, this RC business, but that is more due to PROFIT and Loss issues over passion and doing. I mean, look at art, people still fling paint and varnish onto canvas and folks pay for it, weather it is by Bob Ross or Monet, someone wants to enjoy looking at something so much they pay for it, even some crazy rich person has a 2/3 shredded painting courtesy of Sotheby's earlier in the year. LOL

What makes things fade is "progress", I mean real cars don't actually DO anything more than the cars of 100 years ago, but the WAY they do it is so much more comfortable and efficient etc, so you will see the hobbyist car guys have that saying BUILT, NOT BOUGHT when it comes to how fast or souped up their car/truck is, so there is that faction as they are a relatively small group of folks driving around in the world these days, not unlike us that find time and fun in building model running cars.

There are people that build puzzles, then there are folks that build Lego, they are almost one in the same depending on the result one is after, you can CREATE with Lego or just build it per instruction, you can usually only build the puzzle to instruction, no creation, so there is still another factor to consider in that hobby, the will or want to CREATE something that is more individual than the next person.

I would have said sometime ago that FORMAT would suggest a demise, but with the up tick in Vinyl records popping back on the scene, I might be wrong on that, I'm still waiting on 8 track to be offered again so I can retrofit it into my new car. LOL

I don't know that we do any harm or any good in worrying or wondering if this hobby will stay alive, because we will ultimately find demise ourselves, but we could sure enjoy the ride and try to be better about hanging out with folks we share common interests in.

Not to drag this post down, but I just found out that ebay seller JSourbeck had passed away in August at only 54 years old, so we all have an expiration date, of which we don't know when or why it will be, so let's enjoy the ride.

  6. Well that is quite nice looking and the fact you found a clear windshield, well that is a miracle in itself isn't it. Looks great in that color scheme and will you drive it is the next question I have for ya??

Decided to central my servos (should have done before building most of the car) but the forward and reverse are the opposite way round, i.e. reverse is throttle, throttle is reverse. Any help would be greatly appreciated guys. Running Acoms crystal set with MSC and acoms servos. If I look at the pic of the MSC in the manual, the esc moving left is throttle and right is reverse. Is this correct?

    20180315_212157

Not sure about that radio set itself, but if there are any servo reversing switches in the body of the TX or perhaps inside the battery door of the TX, you could try throwing the reverse switch to sort out the backwards operation.

This afternoon I masked off and painted up a new basher shell for my recently resurrected and now slightly modified (ESC, sport-tuned motor, MIP ball diff etc.) vintage Monster Beetle. When it first arrived from Kamtec I was slightly disappointed at the lack of detail so decided to go for a simple but bright colour scheme to distract from it.

It’s Tamiya Bright Red over gold and silver which gives a subtle metallic fleck, and I messed about with a bit of masking for the stripes and the bonnet detail. All said and done I’m quite pleased with the outcome. The inside is very bling!

I’m going to add a few stickers shortly which will appeal to my 5 year old son, who was the reason for digging it out of the loft and fixing it up.

A few pictures of my collection. Not that good tbh. In there storage boxes. Not how I like to store them but at least it keeps the dust off them. I have 2 boxs full and am on the 3rd atm.

Not to sound snobby, perhaps I have gone overboard, but to me that looks like a good start 😋 I also have too many in a dust free box collection, but I do have some loose ones in there own “garage”,last count on the loose was nearly 300!!! Don’t tell the wife.

Go to ebay.com (not.co.uk) and search for a seller 'hwpeterl' he also does other vintage tyres as well, and they cost less delivered from HK than a set of rere tyres from the UK! Delivery only took 4 days as well :)

I second that, his quality in tires is awesome, I have a set of his original Hilux tires and they are perfectly priced

  11. Wow, 171 and hardly a duplicate, that is impresive. Seeing that matte black one with flames reminds me of the on like that I just customized, shameless plug, but my handle on Instagram is cubooth for anyone who is interested in what has taken more time taphan it should from m6 Tamiya time

Yeah OCD about the cleanup is one thignIm trying to avoid... I'm not convinced I'll win that battle. One of the lower front wing corners is broken off and missing as is one of the rear lights on the tailgate (though these can be grafted on from a rere part to if needed) although I've got a few spare shells and grills I can swap around as I seem to have developed an obsession for collecting them. There's a couple of other Rangers not pictured here too...

OH WOW, LOOK AT THAT Why oh why has no one figured out how to make a fender flare replacement panel for both sides of the Ranger?? Yes it is a simple graft for the taillights AND you can get some that will take it to the next level from Ampro off shapeways for adding LEDs to.

More work done on my CC-01 front servo mount.  Links made up and fitted, but I overtightened the right side steering knuckle ball ends and cracked the mounting hole.  I ordered an aluminum set from Yeah Racing as replacements.

Thankfully this should only need a good cleanup rather than a full resto!

Looks in great shape, I thought mine would be a simple cleanup, but it still is ipundone due to my OCD. How are the fender attachments to the bumper on yours? Sadly one of mine is broke, but that is simple proof it was driven around.
