Best advice is to get yourself over to oople.com and petit RC...tons of advice re. set-ups for this car which, with respect to TC, you are unlikely to find on here. Also join the KF2 page on Facebook...assuming you are on Facebook
Red is faster than green, so I recommend going with PS-2

RHR Astro is open for practice most Wednesdays Spring-summer from 5pm until dusk, unless adverse weather decides otherwise.
the dirt track is only used for special events like the Euros a couple of years back. This is due to the amount of prep work that is required before the track can be used for racing.
contact James Helliwell on Facebook for more info.

Hi guys and gals.
We normally hear if there's a DT02 event by Feb. Is there any news if there's a 2017 event.
I missed last years 😩
Steve, posted on FB in the UK Tamiya DT group...
A little bit of an update from Lee Davies who organises the DT02 challenge. for all thoes interested in the event at SHRCCC. This years event will be held on the 24th of September.
DT02 and DT03 chassis will run together in modified class. New for this year will be a DT01 Mad Bull specific class and this years support race will be Hotshot/Bigwig gearbox/chassis variant buggys. I'd like the car to be mostly vintage cat but with some modern additions that will improve handling, a Resto-mod really! Typically this will include electrics, 2.2 wheels, and modern shocks.
Yesterday evening I started to strip the car down. As you can see there's quite a lot of dirt and dust on it suggesting its been in storage for some time;
It became apparent how brittle the chassis was or perhaps the servos had been super glued in-place? Either way 3 screw thread snapped whilst trying to remove the screws! This is in addition to the damage to the right-hand battery stay which was how the car arrived with me. A new chassis will be required!

1987 was a landmark year for Cats. While Schumacher's Cat XLS was winning the IFMAR 4WD OR title, Traxxas was launching the first hobby grade RTR in the form of the Tom Cat, or just simply the Cat.
It is a car heavily influenced by Tamiya - a Grasshopper style chassis & trailing transmission, a body shell reminiscent of the Fox and Yellow CVA style dampers, albeit with a unique way of adjusting spring rates.
Inspired by an article on URC, I plan to restore and gently modify this car to race at next years Iconic Revival - 30 years after the Cat was released.
This is what I purchased on eBay recently vs. what I would like to create...

Just a footnote to say we're still having fun racing at club, regional and now national level. Oliver is coming along nicely and Charlie has done well enough to secure a team drive with Schumacher Racing for the coming year. I am mainly pitting for both but have the occasional race which is always a good laugh.
really enjoying the racing side of this superb hobby & can't recomend it enough 😊

We race using Gemini X (2.4ghz) and never have any bother. Recently discontinued so prices will initially drop and you should be able to pick up a used TRX & RX for under £100. They don't often come up on eBay so try oople.
We have also used Sanwa Gemini 2, also good & you should be able to get a used set for under £50 easy.
As you say it's a lot for one meet. You need to start racing more! 😀

What are your favorites on the list?
I'm interested to see the TRF211XM and the 'new materials' .. I wonder if this is a 201XMW but with a motor position that is further forward for high grip astro perhaps???
With the worlds in Japan later this year I am sure this release is no coincidence.

That's great, thank you. Trying to find info for Google was difficult. How did you get on with the Desert Gator? I guess that there are different categories for brushed and non-bushed races?
The Gator was fine to start with but we soon progressed to a 2nd hand B4 as skills developed etc.
Generally no brushed, it's all brushless although I believe York run a brushed class. That's not to say you can't race brushed with brushless. To be honest the rules at club level are not overly tight, it's more about joining in and having fun etc.
Like I say, pop down to one of the clubs for a chat; all will become clear :-)

NEAM (North East Amateur Motorsport) meets at Seaham Youth centre, Sunday evenings from 6 - 10pm
Tynemet meet in Newcastle on a Monday evening
Teeside meet Wednesday & Saturday evenings
Benfield RC club meets Friday evenings 6-10pm at Benfield sports centre, Newcastle
York meet at Huntingdon School, York on a Saturday evening.
All race 1/10 off road 2 & 4WD - for more info check out the club section on Oople.
Get yourself along to one of the clubs and talk to the members, who will tell you all you need to know. I will be at Seaham on Sunday with my son.
We started racing in 2013 with a Desert Gator and a brushed 540 silver can. On 7th Feb my son is racing in the British Winter Championships at Worksop, with a brushless C4.2; it's addictive! You won't look back.

The 2014 DT-02 Challenge Race Report is in the latest edition of RC Racer Magazine which is due to hit the shelves around 1st January.
An excellent write-up and it was good to also read the separate article about the Iconic RC vintage racing class, nice one John!

Either running a 30 year-old Frog now, or running a TRF201xmw 30 years from now, BRCA Insurance gives us the solid foundation required to help grow our hobby and move it forward.

A little over a year ago Charlie and I embarked on a journey together. We learned a lot about the racing side of this hobby, and had a lot of fun in the process. Charlie racing and me pitting (with a little bit of racing on the side). Now Charlie's younger brother, Oliver, is getting the bug also.
Charlie has gone from racing a Holiday Buggy to these...

As another TC member said the hobby is a great Father and Son thing to do together. We've had lots of laughter and a few tantrum s between us. Mostly we've had fun, and above all spent quality time together.
I am really looking forward to our second year, Charlie developing, Oliver coming on and having the odd go myself.
Now it's time to wrap this thread up. Thanks for following and contributing :-)

So to confirm then...
We could come along and run non- iconic/ vintage cars provided they are 1/10 electric, and we have BRCA etc???
I have in mind Desert Gator, HB 2010, C4.2 & B44...

Well we had a great day-out racing on the 28th!
There was 5 of us racing including myself, Charlie, Oliver, my nephew, Bailey, and Brother-in-law, Matt. WE had 4 cars, with Bailey and I sharing. Between us we had mixed experience, with Charlie being the most experienced between us.
We were all entered into the Stock class, the three boys racing in the junior class, heat 7, and Matt and I in heat 3.
The cars...
Charlie;
Oliver;
myself and Bailey;
Round 1
Heat 3 - Plenty of Banter between Matt and I ahead of the first round, and it was Matt who had bragging rights after the race finishing 5th out of 8 with me dead-last. Well I had issues with my steering, the servo saver was damaged you see so I could steer in a straight line, blah, blah, blah....
Heat 7 - Lots of action in the juniors heat, with 10 drivers lining up for the race. They gave the cars a good test by litteraly throwing them all over the track!! Charlie's steering assembly fell apart (it's hard being a racer and Pit-Dad!!!) so didn't complete a lap and therefore finish in 10th, Bailey 9th, Oliver 6th.
Round 2
Heat 3 - Servo saver repaired and I was back at the races, literally and 5th place and well pleased. Matt in 8th and it was honors even.
Heat 7 - Steering re-assembled, and Charlie drove well to finish 2nd behind Max, who had already taken the first round in impressive style. Oliver had a bumpy run this time out and finished 7th, Bailey 9th.
Round 3
Heat 3 - An early retirement for Matt as t's his turn to experience issues with his steering; the kit supplied servo-saver not the best ad letting him down early-on. $th place for me and improving with each race.
Heat 7 - Oliver doing really well and getting into a bit of a groove, with a well deserved 4th place! Charlie 2nd, again behind Max who was driving superbly. Bailey 8th1
Round 4
Heat 3 - honestly I cant remember but here's a shot of Matt's car
Heat 7 - Much as before with Max 1st, Charlie 2nd, Oliver 7th and Bailey 10th1
Finals
D Final - only 5 cars out of 7 lined up for the final, myself 4th on the grid and Matt 5th! I go luckey really with others having either mechanical failure or just a bumpy ride; 3rd place woohoo!! Matt 5th.
A Final (juniors) the grid... Max on pole, Charliee 2nd and Oliver in 5th, Bailey in 10th
This was a really frantic race (so it seemed) and to be honest I can remember exactly what happened! The main points however being that the lead swopped a couple of times between Max and Charlie, Charlie' shell got taken off by a Marshall towards the end (because it included his transponder!
), Bailey had an early retirement
, Oliver was somewhere in the middle of it all and managed not to destroy the car (no small feet!!), and I think the Dad's on the sideline nearly imploded with the excitement of it all!! In the end it was 1st to Max and very well deserved having won each of the previous 4 heats, 2nd to Charlie and a big thanks to Max's Dad, Craig, for keeping a level head and watching Charlie's race in the absence of his transponder. Oliver 6th, Bailey 10th. phew....

As I said at the start we had a great day-out and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We are already planning on going again next year A big thanks to Super Gripper and Smitchos and SHRCCC for organizing the event!!

Please does anyone have a spare H1 part for the Holiday Buggy ( the rear mounting bracket for the body shell)?
I am one short and they are hard to find in the UK.

The summer holidays were not as RC packed as I had hoped for, mainly because of other family commitments. But we're back into it now having been up at Seaham the last few weekends and have also picked up a 44.1 to start racing 4WD :-)
This weekend is the much anticipated DT-02 challenge 2014 and I can't believe it's a year since Charlie had his first taste of racing!
We are all really excited about the day, and finally I will also get to enter my first 'proper' competition :-)
Really looking forward to a fun day-out, celebrating the journey we have been on this past year, catching up with the Tamiya-holics we met last year and meeting some new ones.

The Sand Viper will get you started, and should do ok indoors. From what I can tell the TRF201 is a Japanese B4, so pick up a used B4! An older chassis but cheap, spares are readily available (& cheap) and more than capable of competing with 22s etc.
This advice is based on my own experience with my son this past year. We started with a Desert Gator, moved to a B4 and now have a C4.2 & B44.1. Check-out my thread 'Diary of a Pit Dad' in the RC Racing sub-section.
Good Luck!

Hey RC-Dad,Hi,
Booked my son in over the weekend...we're both very new to R/C - we built our first car (Holiday Buggy 2010 Red Edition) over the bank holiday weekend this August.
I've got a 540 Sport Tuned motor on the way from eBay this week and hope to fit it (to replace the stock 340 motor) over the coming weekend and also get out on our local BMX track for a bit of practice.
At the moment we have one 2400mH 7.2v stick pack - how many additional batteries do you think I'll need with me to get my son through all the races?
Also...
I'd like to enter myself into the "Stock" class as well (son is in the Juniors as he's only 6 and a total beginner like me!)...we only have the one car at the moment so we would be sharing it - my question is:
How many fully charged batteries do you think I would need to make it through the day if we're both sharing the same car?
I'll bring my charger with me but it takes 2.5 hours to charge our battery...I also don't know how much of an effect on run-time the faster motor will have...
Very excited to be part of this event though - seems like it will be a great introduction to the sport!

Super Gripper will keep you right. I went along with my son last year, which was our first time racing (though I was in the pits while he raced). We had a great day and I am sure you and your son will enjoy it also. My son is back this year to have another go and will be joined by his younger brother, cousin and uncle, all first timers! Oh, and I will be having a go this year and sharing a car with my nephew!!
See you on the 29th!

Do You Race a Tamiya Off Road?
in RC Racing Talk
Posted
My son started with a Dessert Gator DT02 and did fine with it for 6 months, before moving onto a 2nd hand AE B4.
check out my thread ‘Diary of a Pit Dad’ somewhere further down in this section.
Not many people race Tamiya at club level in the UK. Unless you’re a die-hard Tamiya fan, you’ll want to run a brand that is popular at your local club. Typically this will be either Schumacher, AE or Yokomo.
That way there will (should) be plenty of support when something breaks or goes wrong (and it will 😁).
