Yeah, so I’m baffled….Either I’m doing something very wrong or these Tactic receivers are just junk. I don’t think I’ve ever blown out a receiver, my trusty old Spektrum rx is about 5 years old and has never given me any issues.
Another concern is that there is no polarity marked on the receiver where you plug in the ESC and servo. I assumed that the black wire goes on the outside since that’s how I’ve always connected them.
If anybody on here would like a Spektrum controller (minus the receiver) for very cheap, let me know! LOL

Hi All,
I’m having issues with Tactic 3 channel receivers burning out in my wife’s Tomahawk.
Here is the set up: Using a 2s Turnigy lipo with a Hobbyking ‘X-Car’ 45amp ESC powering an Axial 27T motor. So far, I’ve gone through 2 of these receivers…it will work perfectly fine through one or two batteries. When we go to run the car again a few days later, the LED won’t turn on, the radio is completely unresponsive and the ESC doesn’t go through its full ‘initialization’ tune. It's just completely dead.
I’m thinking maybe the ESC is pumping too much voltage into the rx and burning it out? Very frustrating….
Any ideas?

I do think I'm going to 'cheat' and use the 'micron line tape' on the outside of the shell for the black and blue pinstripes

Ah, thank you! =)

Since I’m terrible at painting, all I can do is take my time and think things through. Start with the light colored, smaller areas then move on to the larger. Don't try to finish it in one sitting....
I don’t care if it takes me 14 months to finish, I’m going to do it correctly! =)
It looks like the ‘Sand Super’ on the OT-30 repro tires need to be painted as well. I've never had luck with the paint not peeling off the tires while driving. Even the ‘Goodyear’ whitewalls on my wife’s Tomahawk are beginning to fade/peel
They may just have to be my display tires.

Just ordered the original decals and tires
I’m going to attempt to paint it, this has been my fantasy rc car for years and I want to take pride (even if it’s difficult) to make it look like the car I cherished when I was a boy =)

Ah, very nice. Did you buy those or print them out?

It doesn’t look bad at all from the pictures!
I've learned that pinstripes are your friend between the different paint colors =)

That looks great! I will probably go his route then, I'm lousy at painting and am petrified that I am going to mess up the paint job.
Do the decals go on the inside? If so, I wonder if you can mask off the windows and spray clear coat or some kind of sealant to prevent the decals from peeling off in the future.

I have what is probably a stupid question, I’ve seen unboxing videos where it appears that it comes with 'panel' decals in place of the more difficult areas to paint. Can you use these 'decals' and paint the remaining body white for those (like me) who are painting challenged? If so, would it look 'cheesy' using the decals in place of paint?

For those in the states, I just received an email from Kyosho America saying that the Optima is back in stock, free shipping and no taxes.

I once had a bad experience when I drove to the local park for a bashing session. I realized that the batteries were fully depleted in my transmitter. Luckily, it wasn’t too far from home so I just threw in a fresh set and (thought) everything was good. Within 2 minutes of driving, I hear an awful grinding sound….I came to realize that the spur gear was shot. No big deal, I had my toolbox with me and a spare spur gear. After about 5 more minutes of running it, I began smelling something burning. Apparently, the motor got dirt or mud in it and was smoking.
After that, I gave up for the day and spent the next hour replacing the motor and the caked on mud off of the car.
So…about 7-8 minutes of running and over an hour of fixing.
Fun..times.

Interesting….One day, I couldn’t get it to work at all with a fully charged nimh battery. I wonder if the low voltage cut-off has anything to do with it.
With a lipo battery, if I turn it off then on again, it seems to work fine. Also, it seems to happen much more frequently if I turn on the ESC before the transmitter…

Hi all,
I recently purchased a Hobbyking ‘x-car’ 45A ESC for my car and seem to be having some intermittent issues with it. Right now, it’s running a brand new 27T Axial brushed motor - Once in a while, the motor will not move unless I give it full throttle and will completely stop if it's not always at 100% throttle. When it does stop, the car will be unresponsive until you give it max throttle again. The ESC was programmed as soon as I installed it.
When this happens I’ll usually turn the ESC power off and then on and that seems to correct the issue. I’ve powered it with both 2s lipo’s and nimhs and I think it mainly happens with nimh’s.
Not a huge deal and I don’t expect wonders with a $10 ESC, just kind of annoying…any ideas?
Thanks,
Jason

I was kind of disappointed in the Neo Scorcher. I don’t know if it was just the luck of the draw, but it was CONSTANTLY breaking. The drivetrain is very weak and one of the first essential upgrades would be to replace the plastic bevel gear in the rear with a steel one. The drivetrain really cannot handle much more than a sport tuned motor without it. Also, the car sits way too low to the ground which causes some problems. You could help remedy that with larger wheels but with the stock shocks, the chassis will be constantly bottoming out on jumps and filling up with dirt and rocks (which causes issues with the prop shaft and the steering mechanism).
The kit comes with plastic bushings, which is typical for most Tamiya kits but they will need to be replaced with ball bearings.
I wasn’t unnecessarily hard on it either, I always took an air compressor to clean it and checked it for loose screws after each run but I found myself fixing it more than I drove it.
Just my 2 cents =)

It looks like you’ve put it to good use!

Holy cow…I checked out the radio’s on hobbyking and now regret buying the replacement rx for her Tactic radio. I could have bought an entire radio system with 5 times the features for the same price as just the receiver

-
Okay, thanks for your help!
-
Thanks, I will try that...did you use the tamiya aw grease?
-
Very true, that may be a bit of an exagerrated price. I found one on ebay for $20, I'm pretty confident the transmitter is still okay
-
Very true, I’m going to have to measure the voltage the ESC is putting out to the rx to make sure the claim of 5.6v holds true. I’m hoping that the receiver lights up when I plug it into a 4 AA battery pack. That would mean the ESC output is bad…If true, I could just plug one of my simple but trusty Tamiya ESC's up instead of spending $40-50 on a new receiver.
-
No, I haven’t tried that yet but it sounds like a good idea. Maybe there is a chance that the output to the receiver is bad.
I just looked up the ESC on hobbyking and it's a 45A, not a 90A. The description also says the BEC output is 5.6v/2A switch mode built in...According to the manual for the receiver, it is supposed to handle up to 7v so the ESC shouldn't be the culprit for the receiver frying...
but I'll try the separate battery idea tonight =) Thanks for all of your help!

Yeah, she was running it on loose, flat dirt. We were using a 2s lipo battery with a silver can 27T motor at the time and the area is so big that I’d say she was at full throttle 90% of the time. It was probably around 55 degrees outside so I’m pretty sure the temperature didn’t cause it to overheat.
I forget what the gear ratio is set at…I know the Tomahawk manual gives you two options and I’m pretty sure it’s geared for a higher top speed.
I went ahead and ordered an Axial 27T motor for it, my wife is new to RC and wanted to get that motor because it’s what towerhobbies recommends…LOL

Keep burning out Tactic 3 ch receivers!

Hi,
I believe it’s a Kyosho standard servo that I’ve been using for a few years.
