Too bad you aren't in the US. I have extra Thorp stuff that I'm willing to part with for cheap. Terry

Take your time. Do one upgrade and drive. See and feel the difference. Decide if you like. Then do the next upgrade. Prolong the fun and spread out the expense.

If you decide to use a different pinion from the kit supplied 10t brass and motor mount, you’ll want to find an Adjustable Motor Mount and then use the Thorp extra long pinions.

These are likely reproductions of the Parma zero bump steer knuckles.

I recently picked up a parts lot on FB and these were in it. Can you identify??? 1. These appear to be #53218. They are the same except for the silver finish on two. They are 25mm long with 11mm OD cup. 2. These appear to be Thorp dogbones based on the finish and the fact that the parts lot had several other Thorp items. They are 49mm pin to pin. 3. Pair of axles. These are 35mm long. 4. Single axle. This one is 40mm long. thank you!!! Terry

Get new tires and/or new beadlocks with tires. The drive shafts will twist. Upgrade with the CR01 shafts. Shocks are same as 50520 if you want the internals. Adding weight helps a lot. -
That car has some nice history, I bet... IMO, I would dis-assemble it, clean it up, and then re-assemble it. Leave the body the way it is. I would replace any broken parts with vintage replacement parts. And then I would buy a new Re-Release kit and give that to him as a present in September along with his childhood model. Let him build a new Monster Beetle. Leave the vintage MB on the shelf for nostalgia and drive the new cars for kicks and giggles. The big reason is that the 30 year old plastic and rubber has likely become brittle with age (that's what happened to my original Frog). The re-release kits are 98% the same as original, with the addition of modern electronics to replace the 30 year old electronics. The body is slightly different, and there are a few other minor changes but overall it is the same old Monster Beetle. And when you do all this, you should buy the Blackfoot for yourself, so there is some cross-over in build experience. You both get to enjoy the build, the driving, and the understanding of how each model is the same and is different. Terry

IMO dis-assemble, clean, re-assemble, then shelf. And then buy a re-release and drive that.

We all buy car insurance. Its a monthly payment and we all suck it up. We all buy health and home insurance too. Every month forever. Its a huge investment into protecting ourselves from liability and damage and financial ruin. Put it into that perspective and buying a batsafe is a good investment. I replaced my ammo can with one a few months ago. eta. If you can’t get a “bat-safe”, the manufacturer also makes them for medical purposes. Might make it easier to get??? https://www.pulsebattery.com/products/bat-safe-lithium-battery-charging-box -

I saw the Frog box art teasing me from a hobby shop kiosk at the mall. I asked for it for my birthday. Months later when I got home from an out-of-town swim meet, it was on the kitchen table waiting for me. 1984ish… But truthfully, I had been building static models for a few years at that point and I was familiar with and was already a fan of Tamiya bc their kits were so much better than the cheap monograms and revell kits I was buying at the toy store.
