  1. If you were sticking with brushed, I would go with a Hobbywing WP-1080 for a crawler. Since you are going brushless, I would recommend a Castle Mamba X Esc. paired with a Holmes Hobbies Trailmaster Pro, Puller Pro, or a Tekin Roc412. Well worth it if you are going brushless. The Mamba X has an auxilary function to toggle between crawler mode and regular mode on the fly using a channel. Crawler mode being the instant reverse mode.
  2. Steps 30-35: Shocks This update is going to be relatively straightforward. I also used the Traxxas X-Rings from the 2362 Rebuilt kit like OSRC did. Parts: Traxxas 2362 Rebuild Kit Bag "E" of shock parts. Those blue X-rings inside the Traxxas 2362 Rebuild kit. Noleen SF3 Grease (available on eBay) Team Associated #5422 30wt Oil (available on eBay) ProTek RC Shock Pliers (available on eBay) Duratrax Shock stand Parts needed for Step 30 O-rings put around the shock caps Parts needed for Step 31 Using the blue X-rings from Traxxas 2362 Rebuild Kit Pistons on the shafts. Time to put the front shocks together Parts for Step 32 rear shock assembly getting there Decided to put the rod-ends on early Filling the shocks up with Team Associated #5422 30wt Oil (available on eBay) Step 33 done Parts for Step 34 Step 34 done Parts for Step 35 Step 35 done Shocks all done
  3. Getting around to installing some parts that have been sitting in the drawers. Boom Racing Rear lockouts for AR44 Boom Racing C-Hubs & Knuckles for AR44 Boom Racing lockout on the left, stock on the right Stock C-Hub on left, Boom Racing on right. I forgot to take pictures of the knuckles, but it's a really tight precise fit for the bearings. You pretty much have to push it in straight perfectly. If it's slightly put in at a minor angle it gets stuck. All installed.
  4. Got around to doing a few updates to the SCX10.2 a few weeks ago. I wanted to try getting this truck finished up so that I can start running it more. One of the things that always bugged me about this truck was that front bumper that sticks way out front. Since I don't plan to really use a winch or have a winch, I thought changing the front bumper was in order. First thing I tried out was to trim the pegs of the stock bumper to see if I could get it to tuck in more. I also drilled out some new mounting hole positions (not shown). It's a lot more tucked in, but I don't like how it just looks like a flat slab jutting out. Next bumper I tried out was the SSD Rock Shield for SCX10 Rough approximation in differences of clearance Bumper is solid, looks good, with good clearance... But.... I don't really like the way it looks with the XJ body. I'll probably keep it for use on another truck that has a narrower front. Finally I decided to try the Axial Dingo front bumper... This one looks a little more promising. I like the way that it protects the full width of the body. Final decision made to keep the Dingo bumper.
  5. Steps 24 + 26-29: Chassis Time to move onto the chassis. For this step, I also used the following non-kit items... Turnigy MG959 V2 Servo (available on eBay) Yeah Racing Hackmoto 550 35T Brushed Motor (available on eBay) Yeah Racing Aluminum 540 Motor Spacer Heatsink (available on eBay) Boom Racing 25T Alloy Servo Horn These are the parts needed for the battery tray I'll be using the Turnigy MG959 V2 Servo and a Boom Racing 25T Servo Horn Servo mounted onto the battery tray/servo mount assembly These are the parts needed to start putting the frame rails together It's starting to look like a chassis! That under-frame receiver box that everybody has been putting weights in... I might do the same. Time to get those links on Links mounted Parts for mounting the motor I'll be using a Yeah Racing Hackmoto 550 35T Brushed Motor So... I ran into a snag with this motor. The motor shaft is longer than normal, and I couldn't put the transmission cover on without hitting the motor shaft. So I had to get Yeah Racing Aluminum 540 Motor Spacer Heatsink With the spacer installed, I was now able to have the motor shaft clear. One thing I am concerned about is the pinion/spur mesh. It's tighter than I would like, and since the motor mount uses pre-set mounting holes, there's really no fine adjustment available. I will revisit this area later after I complete my build to see if there is a way I can make the pinion/spur mesh more to my liking.
  6. Steps 20-23: Links This is going to be a pretty short step/post. Bag of parts for these steps Starting the front lower links Front upper link Rear lower links Rear upper links
  7. Steps 14-19 + 25: Transmission We start with the B-bag. Step 14 parts Assembled gears Parts for the next steps Assembled and greased up Spur gear goes on. They use stacked conical washers instead of a spring for the slipper. Directions say to fully tighten the lock nut, and then loosen by about a quarter turn. Here's how it looks. Parts for the next step.. More e-clips yay... Assembled gears... Skipping to step 25 like new2rocks did. Greased up. I wonder how the 2-speed option setup would look in this spot. That empty space has to be for something. Transmission complete.
  8. Steps 1-13: Axles Let's begin Parts needed for this step Metal balls given to the first batch of BOMs The well labeled hardware bags. Wish they would've went a step further and grouped the hardware by steps as well. Ready to begin Diff gears finished Pinion Gear side of the axle The other side of the axle All greased up C-Hubs going on Front CVDs Knuckles Link mounts Time for the rear axle Front and rear axles all done
  9. So I'm joining the party of BOM build threads. Since the other threads show more of the custom mods, etc. I'll post more detailed step by steps for the stock build for those of you that want to see that, until I fully finish and then venture off into upgrading parts and modifying. Here's what we're building. 13. Max-D Upgrade Part 1: Transmission Gears, Transmission housing, Spur Gear, and Motor Aluminum Transmission Case SSD RC Steel Transmission Gears for SCX10/Wraith/SMT10 Xtra Speed HD Steel Spur Gear 56T/15T Hobbywing Quicrun 10BL60 Brushless unsensored ESC HobbyStar 4-Pole 3500kv Brushless Waterproof Motor Starting the Max-D upgrade. Very similar to the Grave Digger with a few different parts. First thing that needs to be taken care of are the transmission gears and housing. This was a surprise... I've run this truck 2x.. 2! All on stock 27t brushed motor driving around the driveway. You think bringing this up to Axial will achieve anything? SSD HD Gears going in... Aluminum Transmission Housing New SSD HD Gears in aluminum transmission housing (wiped away excess grease after taking picture) Xtra Speed 56T Steel Spur gear going in Xtra Speed Spur mounted on All meshed up Using a Hobbywing Quicrun 10BL60 Brushless Esc HobbyStar 3500kv 4-pole Waterproof Brushless Motor Powerplant/powertrain all mounted up
  14. Grave Digger Upgrade Part 4: Wheels & Tires The JConcepts Tribute wheels and Firestorm tires were the finishing touch. It looks great, and it runs great. JConcepts Tribute Wheels 2.6x3.6 (White) JConcepts Firestorm Tires (Blue Compound) Completed Upgraded look. I used the longest offset adapter on the JConcepts Tributes
  15. Grave Digger Upgrade Part 3: Suspension & Steering Time to finish up the bulk of the remaining upgrades. Mostly suspension and steering related. Axial RR10 Bomber Rear Sway bar AX31331 (for use in SMT10 front axle) STRC CNC Machines Aluminum Reinforcement Lower Link Plate (Green) Aluminum Upper Chassis Links SSD RC Titanium Steering Links DS3218MG 20kg Servo Boom Racing 25T Aluminum Servo Horn Got these generic "RCAWD" aluminum upper links from eBay Old noodle links vs new aluminum links Rear upper links installed STRC link plates to strengthen the lower links. Had an issue where one of their screws just wasn't long enough.. happens to be the only one that is a cap head and not countersunk screw. Luckily I had some longer ones from my Yeti's stainless steel screw upgrade exercise. Upper links and Link plates all added... Front sway bar added DS3218 20kg Servo mounted up SSD RC steering links going on... Using my favorite Boom Racing low profile servo horn. SSD steering links all mounted up
  16. Grave Digger Upgrade Part 2: Axles & Drive Shaft Time to upgrade and strengthen those axles for monster truck status. GDS Racing 107-145mm Steel Drive Shafts Axial Heavy Duty Locker (AX30500) Xtra Speed Stainless Steel Axle Tubes Boom Racing Axial Wraith HD Steel Rear Axle Shafts For AR60 Axle Boom Racing Axial Yeti Heavy Duty Bevel Helical Gear Set - 38T/13T Boom Racing HD Diff Gear. Kept it at stock ratio. For now, only going in the rear axle. Started with the rear axle first. Old diff setup coming out (on right), new one going in (on left). Put the Axial locker into the diff housing. This is only for the rear axle Another look at old(left) vs new(right) All greased up and put back into the axle housing. Time for the axle tubes With the axle tubes... you'd need modifications to your stock rear axle shaft in order to get them to fit through the tubes. These Boom Racing HD Axle shaft required no modification whatsoever. Goes in perfectly. Some how I missed taking a picture of the axle tube inside the axles for the rear, but here it is all put back together. Time to get started on the front axles. Front axle shafts require no modification to fit through the axle tubes. Getting that axle tube in. It's a tight fit, and on top of that not all AR60's are exactly the same. These tubes fit easily on the short side for the most part. On the long side, I had to bust out the hammer to get them in there. I had an easier time with the front axle accepting the tube on the long side than the rear. Here is the axle tube inside the housing Putting on the lower half of the GDS Racing drive shafts. Axles all done.
  17. Grave Digger Upgrade Part 1: Transmission Gears, Transmission housing, Spur Gear, and Motor Aluminum Transmission Case SSD RC Steel Transmission Gears for SCX10/Wraith/SMT10 Xtra Speed HD Steel Spur Gear 56T/15T Hobbywing Quicrun 10BL60 Brushless unsensored ESC HobbyStar 4-Pole 3500kv Brushless Waterproof Motor Finally got to kick off the upgrade build. The Grave Digger will be getting the upgrade treatment first, as it's my son's. First thing that needs to be taken care of are the transmission gears and housing. SSD HD Gears going in... New SSD HD Gears in aluminum transmission housing All put together Xtra Speed 56T Steel Spur gear going in Xtra Speed on left, Axial on right Hobbystar 4-pole 3500kv waterproof brushless going in. All meshed up (The stock 11T Pinion is pictured. I actually ended up swapping out to the 15T pinion that came with the Xtra Speed 56T spur gear) Powerplant/powertrain all mounted up Using a Hobbywing Quicrun 10BL60 Brushless Esc
  18. Always liked the SMT10 looks. Just never got around to picking it up... until now. Decided to pick up 2. Max-D for me, and Grave Digger for my son. Ran it box stock and it was..... slooooow... but I already knew that. Time to build them up! 19. It's a great bang for the buck ESC especially for crawlers. XT60 connector, Programming card, a decent built-in BEC... Many on RCCrawler forums use this as the standard Brushed ESC setup.
  20. for a few bucks more (around $40) you can get a Hobbywing 1080 if you're sticking with brushed motors.
  21. Yeah technically, I could just use my hacked FlySky GT3C, but I want to keep it segregated from my normal running trucks. I plan to just stick a Hobbywing 1060 in there for Esc.
  22. I personally already have both the re-re Mountaineer and Bruiser. The only reason I wanted the RTR is for the radio that already supports the channels/switches for switching the 3-speed transmission.
