  1. Ah click, yeah I remember now about the bumper being not as wide... For some reason I thought there was something different about the small white bumper that mounts directly onto the Brats nose... I had one of those and thought great they're hard to come by but not so it's the chassis bumper I'll have difficulty tracking down :/
  2. Your right, brake fluid is just for the hard shells like Clod Buster etc...
  3. I would have thought the exponential feature would be useful dealing with all that brushless power that is around nowadays. Let the throttle ease in and build once the traction is there... You do this manually anyways but with the exponential too i guess you can fine tune your launch control!! James
  4. Hmmm... I much prefer having a lady full time in my life, they say an experience shared is an experience multiplied. You guys who are most comfortable being single can afford the time to keep an eye out for women who are RC friendly Never say Never, won't happen overnight... Find the lady's with the massive shoe collection so she'll understand your addiction to your growing mound of RC stuff... perhaps even have a Pre-Nup... She takes the shoes you take the cars... Or if you have a midlife crisis and feel you need to wear women's clothing maybe you could forsake a couple of cars for some glitzy 4" heels... Don't take me too seriously James
  5. Awhhhh Man the anticipation is killing me... surely you have picture on what your waiting for!? James
  6. I reckon you should be able to order the rere decals through a regular hobby store... should be fairly inexpensive... I know on occasion I've managed to order decals which I thought had long gone my the way like Super Hornet etc... worth a shot James
  7. Glad you got it safely! I was beginning to start counting days since I sent it off. To be honest it was 99% Fatboyslim who shouted you! I'd just been holding it specially for you, just a matter of and sending it to you! It has come up well and looks authentic, that FAV must almost be done now All the best with the next project! cheers James
  8. Although I'm not in the New Zealand, I've been following what happening quite closely... The aftershocks keep coming and some of them are still very strong... Christchurch seems to have a lot more brick and stonework than most other places around New Zealand so the damage has been quite severe. Water and Sewerage are the biggest problems at the moment... Scientist fear that there may still be a bigger one to come and apparently there was another one last night a bit further out but in a location not supposedly on a fault... Fingers crossed things settle down there and people can get on with rebuilding the normally beautiful city... Best wishes to those down there and ex pat kiwi's who can't be with their family and friends right now... James
  9. Heya, sorry to see your collection move on, so what is your alternative interest now? kind regards James
  10. Have a look at my "Evan" head as it should be perfect for the Avante... Great quality sculpt with fantastic details and easier to paint than the original head... http://www.tamiyaclub.com/trades_model.asp...877&id=3092 cheers James
  11. Heya, was just thinking... what's your partners thing? Does she cross stitch? I'm guessing it probably is her children... I don't suppose they've taken any interest in your RC hobby? Your Lady could possibly see your RC hobby as selfish as it isolates you from her and her children. Going out for picnics and taking a couple of cars out to run broke the ice of RC to my Fiancee Kelly. The event was always about spending time together and exploring, the cars were always secondary but we both ticked the boxes of the things we wanted to accomplish for the day. Are there birthdays coming up? suggest you work with the other child to come up with a cheap and cheerful runner for the other one... if the children get drawn into it and enjoy it your partner will ease up on you as it's time spent together and developing relationships... not just a bloke in a shed or in a quiet corner playing with what looks like toy cars... we know better but that's what it looks like... All the best for resolving the underlying frustrations and getting on with it! James
  12. I am very fortunate to have a Fiancee who really doesn't mind my RC hobby and in fact enjoys it, Kelly has gotten involved herself on a number of occasions... When we got together about 4 years ago I must have had perhaps a dozen cars, now I have in excess of 70. Early on in our relationship I bought her a Frog for her birthday, she assembled herself with the exception of setting up the radio gear, she also painted and decal'd it herself. We would go out regularly on excursions to find a cool place to run them, explore and have picnic lunches etc... We met up with Axxl1 and friends several times and enjoyed running a bunch of cars on an outing. A couple of years later I introduced her to racing at the New Zealand Electric Offroad Nationals... her first event was a National event and she surprised herself when she bet a couple of guys. Her Frog had been sold and replaced with a Desert Gator to give her a bit more ommph... Next came her Baldre which she ran particularly well but she became a little self conscious of beating guys in a largely male dominated sport. We all need to encourage more women to get involved! I'm currently allowed to buy a car if it's in the first 100... not a bad restriction... Beyond a 100 cars we'd simply run out of room with family to store them anyways! We are currently saving for a house for when we return back to New Zealand from Australia, a room to display my collection and a workshop to work on them goes without saying... I feel for those of you out there whose partners don't get out fascination with these cars, here's hoping that one day they'll adopt the attitude "if you can't beat them, join them!" I don't smoke, drink or get fresh with other women but hey I'll restore vintage Tamiya and run the odd car round a track from time to time, doesn't sound like too big an ask!
  13. Academy did a Hummer on Hornet like chassis with lunchbox wheels... wasn't the prettiest thing... James
  14. Been following your build Erich, really looking forward to seeing this one finished! Congrats on resolving your driver figure and special mention to Stuart for being so helpful in this hobby! So what will your next project be? kind regards James
  15. I don't know the specific shop you should go to but you definately need to go to Akihabara which is the electrical goods suburb... I remember finding a number of model stores there many years ago... I also remember wishing I had enough funds to take an Egress home... James
  16. The Grasshopper/Hornet gearbox are one of the sturdyest around. They been known to run for many many years with next to no maintenance. Just bolt in that brushless it will be fine, I wouldn't know how you'd strengthen the gearbox anyways... just make sure you are using bearings instead of the plastic bushes, reckon they'd melt... James
  17. I'm the opposite too, as in I paint my models in box art... I did venture away with my Falcon built from new parts. I used a white and blue scheme similar to an alternate version shown in one of the Tamiya RC Guidebooks. Course then I bought another to do in the correct Box Art colours... I like the Box Art schemes as they are so integrated with recognition of the models. I'm eager to have 1 of every model in the first 100, if I manage to get/keep duplicate models then I will do some alternate schemes of my own designs. I will also get more involved in doing custom modifications. I'm working on a very special Buggy Champ at the moment as my original Rough Rider has already filled the space in my first 100 models. I cut the shell into 4 pieces to carry out the mods!!! The value of the cars certainly hold better if completed in box art, although that doesn't factor into my reasoning I just love the box art schemes!
  18. I also got thinking today whether this thread might pull out someone who may have built one or 2 kits but had amassed dozens of kits on the "To Do List" with the intention of building in the distant future... I'm guessing there are a few people who aren't thinking of investment by hanging onto NIB's or enjoy just looking at NIB's but rather saving it up to build as a nostalgic trip down memory lane years from now... Anyone here queueing up the kits as a retirement project?
  19. Looks like you must be due for another Clod Buster Robert!!!
  20. Thanks for the insights, it's interesting to see the progression of peoples cars from one to the next. I think I was also keen to log my builds somewhere before I forget! Was a bit of nostalgia when thinking about what I've built and then trying to put a date on the build by what else was going on around me at the time! You got me thinking about making a list of the restorations and rebuilds etc, but I gave up! I've turned over a couple of hundred cars, sadly I let many go when I started collecting as I felt guilt for the amount of money I was spending on them. Nowadays I tend to hang onto nearly everything and well I guess I just gave up fighting the addiction! I justify it when I think the money I've put into these is probably far less than what I could have spent had I a close relationship with cigarettes or alcohol. Collecting these cars has been a healthy choice and what I like about it too is it's a life hobby! James
  21. I was just thinking about another forum topic here about which kits have the best tolerances and best build quality etc, my answer was the best I've ever built was the Dynastorm. Then I started to wonder if I was the best qualified to answer dependent on the number of and the kits I've had experience building... I've built a lot of cars from parts but my question is how many NIB's have you assembled and what are they, here's my build history Tamiya Falcon 1988 Tamiya Monster Beetle 1990 Tamiya Toyota WRC TA03 1998? Tamiya Blitzer Beetle 1998? Tamiya Super Hornet 2005 Tamiya Midnight Pumpkin 2005 Tamiya Hornet rere 2006 Tamiya Frog rere 2006 Tamiya Frog rere 2007 Tamiya Frog rere 2007 Tamiya Grasshopper 2 2007 Tamiya Grasshopper rere 2008 Tamiya Lunchbox rere 2008 Tamiya Hotshot 2008 Tamiya Desert Gator 2008 Team Associated B44 2009 Tamiya Ford F350 2009 Tamiya Dynastorm rere 2009 Tamiya Buggychamp 2010 Yeah so 19 kits is pretty reasonable...? What's your count?! Yet to do 2 Sand Scorchers Subaru Brat Top Force rere Should be interesting! James
  22. Just saw you talking about dark red... perhaps the white isn't sooo important after all!!! James
  23. Heya, I'm sure you could go straight on top with the red but ideally your primer should be a light shade to make the red be a true shade of it's intended colour. Also I wonder if painting over a matte colour might to a degree make the Red top coat less gloss? I use a really high quality automotive grey primer, I think off the top of my head the brand is Colorpak, it's fantastic! Then I will use a gloss white, either Color pak or Tamiya TS... then I select my colour in Tamiya TS... From experimenting on many shells this has been the best process for superb glossy and great finishes... I tend to strip everything back to base plastic colour but it can take ages and if you're working on a runner it's probably overkill. Maybe give it a light rub with a non scratch kitchen pad in warm soapy water, not so much to remove paint but to make sure it's clean etc... Then go gloss white followed by your Red. You'll have to post you results here... James BeetleLover
  24. When assembling my Dynastorm I found it to be insanely accurate in terms of parts tolerances and lack of slop, it is absolutely gorgeous and the suspension movement is amazingly smooth and lush... I've assembled newer models since but nothing I've ever assembled surpasses it... James
  25. Cool thanks for the answers! I'm now in search of clear glass for my Brat project... cheers James
