  1. I have made a buck to vac form a high quality Wild One Replica body. I have made several bodies. First results show that it is very accurate albeit just a mm or 2 shorter in length which does not affect fitment. I have used a different material which is clear and not too different in qualities to Polycarbonate. The material thickness is a fraction thicker too, .2 of a mm i think from memory. I would like to sell shells in order to recoup costs and to use to swap for parts needed to complete my other models. I would like to start a discussion on the Reproduction / Replica market and how it relates to Copyright as it is a complex subject and I don't want to find myself in trouble with Tamiya, it'd just be a David and Goliath scenario and certainly kill my Hobby of vintage Tamiya RC...

    So what's the story?

Here's some of the thoughts that are floating around in my head, please respond with your thoughts and knowledge that may confirm, deny or shift my thinking to what the general concensus is...

Tamiya obviously no longer produce this bodyset so I'm not competing with them in the market place.

There are few Tamiya Wild One bodysets available and are financially beyond many enthusiasts, particularly those that would just like a body for a runner.

I don't see myself possibly being able to impact the value of a legitimate Tamiya bodyset, altho my Body is well made on close inspection it can be distinguished from the original

Body would never be marketed as a legitimate Tamiya bodyset but as a Repro / replica (a contact with some Legal knowledge supports the idea that it would be ok to sell providing it is marketed as "REPRO")

Body does not include Decal set and therefore avoiding many trademarks etc

People produce replica Decals, are they different to a body?

The numbers I envisage selling wouldn't be a great number and I would want to limit the number of my run, my initial figure in my head is maybe 50, many of these are required simply to just recoup my costs

In Australasia from researching on the net it would seem that commercial product Copyright on products lasts for 16 years, that would mean Wild One's 1985 Copyright potentially may have expired... Does Copyright last differently in different countries? It's hard enough to research copyright law let alone one set up in Japan, Does anyone know more about Japanese Copyright Law or Copyrights of Tamiya products?!

Kamtec have been commercially reproducing a variety of Reproduction bodies for sometime now (I have enquired twice on the Kamtec site whether there is license of some kind to produce such reproductions, I did not receive a response...)

I sent an email to a seller on Ebay who sells a number of Reproduction products and he agreed that the Copyright had probably expired and that they are only good for so many years unless they reupdate it, apparently the box does not have any copyrights on it but the Wild One instruction sheet does have the Copyright symbol... is that for the instructions or the bodyset? He suggested I box on, make the Body and sell them...

If I were to sell a few and Tamiya had a problem with it I've heard they could possibly send a cease & disese letter. Is that just a slap on the wrists and don't do it anymore or is that the beginnings of a lawsuit... Again when i think of the numbers I would produce I'm not even a blip on the radar in the larger scheme of things and when you consider that it could only be a good thing to reinvigorate the vintage market/interests... Maybe if Tamiya monitored the Reproduction market it might encourage Tamiya to Re-release whole kits or maybe just the parts desperately in need!!!

So let the Debate / Discussion begin... Your thoughts on COPYRIGHT regarding REPRODUCTIONS on products that are NO LONGER IN PRODUCTION

    cheers

  2. - > I am much with your analysis, and I believed that Tamiya is not direct re-issue the hot-shot instead re-create the 'new' hot-shot using existing

    - > (current) chassis. Indication from the description of the model do show that being the case. Besides that when I click on the hop-up options that is
    - > already available to the page of new hot-shot introduction in Tamiya-usa, it shows a list of hopups for DT02 !

Yeah but if you look at the hopups available they really aren't that specific to an actual chassis and I think most of them could be applied to an original hotshot chassis...  i.e. cva hopups to replace monoshock, sport tuned motor, bearings... doesn't suggest to me it will be an actual DT02 chassis... I would imagine that maybe internal gears etc may be different, maybe a mount point for a stabiliser could be different to accept other current solutions on modern day counterparts.  I doubt very much they would reverse engineer a current chassis but rather make additional changes to the original...

  3. As I work my way down from the Gearbox I have now encountered another problem with the length and diametre of the Frog Axles... i.e. they are meant for Hornet / Frog rear wheels instead of Fox / W O type...  I thought no worries I'll use a TA02 Axles but then that is slightly smaller at the cup and won't take the dogbone...  does anyone know what axle/cup will I need?

    cheers

  4. Thanks for the Advices!

I think I know what the problem is, here's me trying to put together the sweetest New Built Wild One and altho it doesn't really add any more performance I thought I'd go as far as I could and add an 850 bearing in there and the trouble with those is that you can't sand them!!!  Yeah I've found the gearbox to be a little too tight (notchy, can really feel every tooth of those bevels...) so will revert to a sanded bush!!!  I'm not intending to Run this car but just incase it will be future proofed for the possibility, it will pain me a little to  have her grounded on the shelf but she'll look good!!!

    Thanks

    James

  5. Can anyone tell me how to correctly shim a Wild One Gearbox, I haven't the original shims or little spacers that go up to the bevel gears... but instead i have been playing with an 850 bearing on one side and a washer on the other, think i've heard of someone doing similar... My gearbox still feels notchy and not quite right...  I have put in a frog rerelease gearbox running the high ratio with 19 tooth pinion, seemed like the only combo that lined up right...

Yeah so has anyone have experience getting this setup right without the original shims...

    cheers

I'm going to make one eventually but am currently too tired up with work... I have access to a 3D scanner, 3D prototyper/printer and a CNC machine... Before the Delorean I will make a 1/10th scale volkswagen combi to fit on a monster beetle chassis or perhaps something modern like a twin detonator... will follow this thread and let you know when i get onto the project...

  7. Hey everyone... I've just found myself a new Falcon body and I'm looking forward to painting it soon. I remember as a kid when i had my original Falcon painted in the Box art colours how much i prefered the paint job on a Falcon in a Tamiya guide book. Does anyone recollect the picture of a guy holding a trophy with a white and blue Falcon,,, if so could you let me know what year guide book, or even better if someone could send me the image that would be fantastic

  8. Whereabouts do you live... I'm possibly interested in the Monster Beetle and perhaps the Falcon... Depending on how much postage costs I will make you an offer :)

    cheers
