  1. This is a really good point. We run 21.5T here and the ESC is a HW stock spec and then a Orca motor (only ROAR approved I could get at the time) and so I'm at about the same, when a silvercan would do. I suspect running brushless probably ends up with more evenly matched cars though, as people would no doubt use their methods to get the most out of a silvercan. I do wonder about people putting the latest and greatest motors in their F1's though, as they are so easy to overpower, its not like a touring car where 21.5T can feel slow on some tracks.
  2. Last time I checked both rcmart and rcjaz have 42102 in stock if you don't mind shopping online. Sounds like you know what you're doing with tuning. I find the Hudy guide useful which was free to download from theirvwebsite if you want some light reading. All the clubs near me race on low grip surfaces so i'm with you on softer suspension setups
  3. Why are you limited to the kit CVA? If its price then fair enough as dampers are stupidly expensive! But if its because you can't find some to fit, the FF04 Evo comes with the TRF dampers 42102 which should be a straight swap on the XV01 since they're very similar. So the Yeah Racing versions should also work as a cheaper option to the TRF? The FF04 came with hard springs front and med rear, and pretty sure it was 400CST oil with 3 hole pistons all around. That setup was a good starting point, I only had 1 test day with it and I think the swaybars would have helped. I ended up taking all the rear droop out to stop the back end coming around so easily and the next step would have been adding the front sway bars but it didn't come with them. Thats probably not a bad place to start, but of course the XV01 will be different with the rear wheels being driven
  4. Just seen pricing for the Boomerang locally - $350. Think mine worked out to be $320. It wasn't the price so much, more that they had stock. But the Super Sabre was $440 when available - a big premium for a different body and red shocks! My Boomerangs arrived today, its not a good look having so many unbuilt kits. I could be having an uncomfortable conversation soon!
  5. The Super Sabre is here because I just ordered 2 Boomerangs and would rather have had a Super Sabre and Boomerang. At least with the Super Sabre it just needs bearings and will just work, the Boomerang has been our most reliable runner which just goes and goes despite kids driving it like kids.
  6. @Pizza Frog I just saw Speedi Models post to say they'll have Boomerangs in stock on the 11th, so all the shops should then too since they all come from the same supplier. Coromandel Hobbies has them on trademe for $389 too. None of the usual sites are showing them as in stock though, but message Speedi if you want to secure one
  7. A DB01 Durga is an older design than 5 years, but is still a great runner and the closest you can get to a NIB TRF buggy without the pricetag of buying off a collector. There are a lot more options if you go for an onroad car. The TRF420X as @Willy iine has already mentioned, but there are also the midrange kits like XV01, XV02, TA07, TA08, TB05. The TA08R has just been released and has a lot of blue bits...
  8. I've never seen a spool for them, but one person who will know is @TurnipJF, his knowledge on these things is encyclopedic Check if Yokomo or Assoc etc make those bushings, they're bound to and will be 1/8" which would be better. I haven't ever used a spur that takes 3mm diff balls, always end up with spurs that use 1/8" to get the right FDR
  9. I've seen people use servo tape to lock it as an easily reversible experiment, so you could try that. Those bushings will be better though, and also easily reversible. Tamiya use 3mm diff balls, do Yokomo use 1/8" or 3mm? It probably won't make a difference for the bushings, they would fit in the 1/8 holes and should still work
  10. Just from RCMart. At first glance the shipping seems really high, but buying 2 put them just over NZD300 each which I'm sure will be cheaper than local prices anyway. I would have liked one to have been a Super Sabre but they're not out yet. Like you I've been looking locally but haven't seen any
  11. Are Boomerang the same as Hotshot and Super Hotshot ones? If they are then Jazrider make them, in a few colours too https://www.rcjaz.co.nz/tamiya-hotshot-super-aluminum-rear-knuckle-arms-blue-p-32898.html
  12. Yep, it doesn't matter what battery chemistry you use, its all power. Brushless is more efficient than brushed so you will still see gains. Where NiMH can't keep up is if you add a lot of electronic timing (boost and turbo) in the ESC settings. It gets to the point (quickly) where NiMH can't supply the required power and the car doesnt get any faster
  13. You can't really compare the FDR between buggies and touring cars as the wheel size matters, so a buggy will always have a higher FDR (as in lower geared) to get the same effect. The BZ is the buggy version of the SS, the TZ or RZ FDR charts will probably (not sure here...) reference touring cars with their smaller wheels, so expect to see numbers around 7 or 8 (I really don't know, I only know the FDR for brushless motors) Since I don't have an XV01 I can't really help on your original question, but by all accounts they are a great chassis and can handle some power so I'd say the SS is the way to go
  14. An Avante Black is on its way but that will probably get put away with a Novafox until I really want to build a kit. Also 2 Boomerangs are on their way, but once again they will be built when my wife next goes away and I'm home with my son for a few days. Or we may build them in the school holidays, 6 weeks is a long time to keep kids entertained. I have enough projects that I don't need new kits so i should be questioning why 3 are on their way here!
  15. After reading the requirements, clearly the answer is what Timmy's mum or dad wanted as a kid? So the budget becomes fluid and they buy a Boomerang
  16. The Futaba 3PV is really small. Usual Futaba quality, 10 model memory, all the adjustments you need (EPA to slow the car down). I think my son was about 4 when we got one and it was perfect for him, and the good thing is its still going strong and is used a lot. You can get clone rx for them too which are a lot cheaper than Futaba ones and work fine
  17. Honourable mentions to the Top Force and DB01 (both great to build and drive well) but for me its the Boomerang. Performs well (enough) on the backyard track and just keeps going, and the onky hopups are bearings. We have a number of Tamiya buggies and they all have their issues but the Boomerang seems immune
  18. Thanks so much Twinfan! A life saver (possibly literally if I added stuff to justify that 55euro shipping and my wife was here when the courier arrived!)
  19. Wow thanks @Twinfan and @Tamiyastef, this is brilliant. Its almost 10pm here but I have one I can take out and measure tomorrow if you want me to confirm the measurements. Obviously I'm happy to cover the cost of postage and a pint for your trouble!
  20. That could be interesting, if the right kit comes up...TA08R... You raise a good point about the parts bag. Its a generic part that is bound to be used on a lot of things. The whole parts bag will be expensive, but if I could work out what else uses it then it may work. It could be used as a shock standoff or post as well, so its bound to be available in other parts. Any idea how to find a list like that? Thank you for the offer, that may be the best route yet. UK shops tend to have decent shipping options, I'm yet to find stock though!
  21. Haha, I've been looking at all sorts of orders with Super Sabres and Boomerangs but nothing works out at the moment. Shipping seems to be a killer on anything that isn't a small bag of parts. RCMart are good right now, 3 sets of arms and shipping was about $6 but they don't have this in stock, and actually don't even have it as a part if you search for it. TTP have a listing but not in stock right now so that may be the best bet. Otherwise I may need to call on a favour from a friendly member to see what can be done! Let me know when you do make an order as that could be my best option.
  22. Does anyone have any of these lying around? They are the steering post/bushing from the Thudershot series. We've managed to lose one and no one has them in stock, except Tamico and they want 55 euro shipping!
  23. You'll have the radio a long time so its worth spending a bit more on sometging better. I have a few now from cheap FkySky GT3C to Sanwa M17. The better radios have better features, but there is also a lot that is subjectively better about them which is harder to quantify (compare driving a Suzuki Swift to a BMW 5 Series, bith work but one is just nicer) If you can stretch to the midrange like Sanwa MT5 or Futaba 4PM you won't regret it. Check out cost of receivers too. There are clone ones available from aliexpress which work well and are a lot cheaper at roughly 1/3 of the price. I tend to use Sanwa rx for race cars and clones for backyard cars. Pretty much all radios will do what you need, if you can go and have a look at them in a shop that would help to see how they feel in your hand.
  24. I'm hoping its a bad batch and once they're done we get some decent ones. If its a change to material and this is how fragile they are then it basically means these cars are shelfers only. Just ordered 3 new sets, hopefully that will last through summer!
