  1. The original decals are also pretty rare nowadays. I guess it's a toss up between overall look and the authenticity. To be authentic, ofc you use the decals but as you can see, even one of the best model detailers Ive seen has struggled with getting these decals flat. I count my self as a very average shell painter and you can see, even for my skills, pretty good painted stripes were possible.
  2. That's why it's worth painting the stripes. My shell overall is not a patch on yours - lot's of mistakes - but with your skills, i think painted stripes would have been icing on the cake. Still, some beautiful work.
  3. Ive got a 201 and that xm kit. If i have to go via the XR im a bit stuff too! Hoping to build it this week, will let you know.
  4. I got one off ebay a few weeks ago. There are a few like this one around.
  5. I love it for many reasons but for me the Astute. Supposed to be Tamiya "race" car but so overengineered, heavy and brittle (not to mention tail heavy and understeering badword to drive) it was dead in the water until massively revamped / simplified with the SA. *edit - didn't see the "to work on" bit.... To work on - avante. So many parts.
  6. You're right if you want to make a profit it clearly isnt a goer :). My point was more about preservation of the limited remaining stock. I painted one of these original shells a couple of months ago, my masking was ok but much more amateurly done than yours and it took a LONG time. I would quite happily have paid to improve the job i did, purely to do proper justice to the shell.
  7. Or dremel through the motor shaft (as a last resort)
  8. It depends if you like torque twist. If you like driving on 3 wheels, 3s is great!
  9. Ive got a hilux with a DS tranny fitted. Pretty easy mod but you do need to cut the chassis and cut a new sub chassis. Where are you based out of interest? I'm the guy who designed the 3d printed gearbox, wouldnt mind someone giving it a thrash test in a KingCab.
  10. should perform very similarly on the 211 to 201, there are only a few parts different.
  11. Really nice. Good fit for a v1 (took me 3/4 versions to get my astute gearbox "perfect"). I've got a trf201 with XM conv kit so be v interested to see how this changes your 211's handling.
  12. Did this land from shapeways yet? Interested!
  13. Thanks! Mine fit square batteries as well as curved btw.
  14. RC10 set the model for all subsequent "performance" 2WDs. Hornet got a lot of kids into the hobby but was dated design wise. I vote RC10.
  15. 3d printed aluminium is pretty pricey and still no where near as strong as milled.
  16. You should sell the masks. People would pay for these I think & you've already done the hard work if you have the files saved. Back to the stripes, painted looks MUCH better imo. I've painted 3 of these with stripes - really isnt too hard to do with some fine tape & planning and looks much more professional.

    Must have Kyosho?

Having restored 2 recently.... Be warned that some parts are crazy rare for the maxxum (specifically parts like the rear wishbones). It also handles like a dog as the weight is too far back for a fwd.

Its true, v helpful chart. Its even more complicated that the naming suggests as even within the Mids there are SWB & LWB variants (older ones SWB, newer ones LWB - with various chassis materials used). I focus on the Optima Mids personally and they can basically be summarised as follows: Mid - SWB, 1st mid, basic model Turbo Mid - SWB, Minor changes, Antiroll bars, Front CVDs etc Turbo Mid SE - SWB, all hop ups ootb Mid Special - 1st LWB, V high spec (carbon chassis, most hop ups, multiple wheels, fancy platinum shocks). Limited edition so v rare Mid Custom - LWB, budget version of special, basic shocks, alumide chassis etc Custom Special - LWB, "normal racing" hopups included BUT lower spec than special. Horrible (imo) body but can easily be retrofitted with custom/special (which are the same). To further complicate things, many on ebay are mashups / hybrids and there is even some variation within the model designations (eg custom special comes with either FRP or alumide chassis but still in the same box/name). I think the basic Mid and the Custom special seem to be most common (at least in the UK).
  19. Yeah there were literally no comms. I was starting to wonder about my order too.

Lazer is the successor to the optima. Optima / Javelin (various iterations) Optima Mid Lazer ZX Lazer ZXR etc etc Good summary here.
  21. I ordered some predator parts 2 weeks ago. No comms at all but they arrived on Friday. Think theyre a "back of the house" operation tbh - parts they have are crazy random.
  22. I thought the thorp stuff had to all be used together (ie the thorp counter too). Certainly thats the case with Thorp's Astute stuff. Not sure on blackfoot tho.
  23. Woohoo! amazing news on the Super Astute re re, will be great to see more SA runners. Will mean lots more usage for my lipo battery kits and gearboxes too
