Very interesting ! Well I did as most were recommending and pulled to pieces the gearboxes, found nothing obvious, no damage, no wear, not even sticky grease in fact it all looked very nice (I can’t believe after all this time but it’s true), the grease even looked (to me) to be adequate. Anyway whilst it was in pieces I cleaned and re-greased, I didn’t go crazy with the grease (I didn’t have any Tamiya grease, I used what I had - White Lithium). I also removed all 4 wheels and inspected, cleaned and re-fitted (didn’t use any grease here, thought it’d attract too much dirt ???). I,ll be honest I don’t think I’ve fixed anything, but I have to go buy another motor again to find out (this will be number 4 !). BUT… Now reading Juggular’s suggesting ‘A Light Has Come On’ I remember when I took off the first blown motor (the original from 1986) I found these metal plates laying on the bench, I’ll be honest I don’t know what order they were in as to begin with I didn’t even know where they’d come from, I quickly realised but on re-fitting the new motor I ‘guessed it’ and also too for each other new motor after, this could be my problem right here couldn’t it ? Now I have the detailed info I just need to count the teeth on my pinion and hold my breath ! There are only 3 plates though, so either it only ever had 3 or I lost one during the first strip down, I’ll have to get one made up somehow this weekend I guess, I’ll keep you posted. Thanks Juggular, you’ve given me some hope.

Im learning quite a lot here, i was hoping for an hours worth of non stop fun, i bought 2 batteries [4400mAh], so i could switch batteries when the first went flat, its looking like im gonna have to get used to the idea of a maximum of 30mins. Is there no way of achieving 1hour ? no way of improving the cooling of the motor whilst its been used ?

Yes does last a little longer on tarmac, just not as much fun though, but neither is fitting a new motor every 2 hours so i guess i have to change my ways.

Ball bearings and re-grease looks like the way forward (and another new motor...Silver can again i guess ?) Yes i did build the car originally, good idea to include my son with this re-build. Thanks for the manual link, itll be very helpful.

Sorry i dont have a clue about the pinion ? whatever came as standard back in 1986. This car is [was*] all completely factory standard. *now fitted with 4400mah NiMh and a ESC No im not aware of 'Hotshot gearbox's pinion meshing system with the 4 stick plates' or how it work ?

Most ive got out of the Boomerang [using the 4400mah battery] is 30mins, sometimes as little as just under 20mins, sometimes on a tarmac driveway, sometimes on the grass field next to my house but i did buy a second battery and when the first goes flat we slip in the second one. Have we really only gotta have 10-15mins of fun at a time ? Its mainly my 6 year old son who is absolutely loving his new found pastime, if i tell him hes got sit and watch it cool down for 30mins hes not gonna be happy, probably shoot off on his pushbike somewhere, lol.

By 'get ball bearings' do you mean for the wheels ? there aren't bearings available for within the gearbox are there ???

Ooooooookaaaaaaay, i really didnt want to have to do this [worried about breaking irreplaceable parts] but it does sound like there's a strong possibility that this maybe is contributing to [or causing entirely] my problem, thanks for the advise.

Motor doesnt work at all now. Looks like i have to go look into the gearbox then, i really didnt want to do this especially as its so old, im almost certain to have issues and break something thats difficult to obtain, so if there is somebody else out there with any other ideas please let me know before i 'put it under the knife', thanks for you help though and i do think youre right, ill keep you posted.

Thanks for reply. Ive spun each wheel individually and they all seems fine, ive also then spun both rear wheels together followed by both front wheels together, sure theres a little more resistance [which is to be expected] but not really anything that id say was definately going to cause any problems but i should say im very new to this, i dont have another car to compare it to so dont really know what i should be feeling here. I held the car against the inside of my garage internal door and quickly pulled down wards, after lifting the car away from the door the wheels spun for a couple of seconds longer [bear in mind there is the latest burnt out motor still fitted] ???

Hi Guys, i seem to have a problem, i have a 1986 Boomerang [completely original] that i bought back to life recently, it had been stored away at my Mums house for maybe 20+ years, all i did was buy a new battery (4400Nmh Overlander) and had about 2-3hrs of trouble free fun, then the motor blew, ok i thought just replace it and try again, i bought and fitted a Tamiya 540 Silver Can, it lasted a couple of hours tops and also blew, at this point i did think maybe i should try a different type of motor but it was suggested that maybe id picked up an object [maybe a small stone off my driveway] and it had caused the problem so rather than trying a different type of motor maybe just try another standard silver can [less than £10 so why not], well this time it didnt last an hour and i noticed smoke coming firstly from the MSC so i quickly disconnected the battery, i picked up the car and noticed that if i put the car in slow speed position no problems [forward or reverse] but when i put the car in to medium speed the smoke now started coming from the ceramic resistor [?] and when i went full speed the smoke started coming from the motor, i quickly found that this motor was now also blown. So obviously theres something wrong elsewhere, i pulled the MSC to pieces and could see nothing obvious [not even any evidence of burning but decided to upgrade to an ESC, oh and a third new standard tamiya silver can. Great the car seemed better than it ever has before, also upgraded to a steering wheel type transmitter too, mainly because the ESC didnt seem to be working right with the old stick controller [brake not working as supposed to], well ive run the car now 4 times [so not quite 2 hours} and the motors gone again ! No smoke this time, not even much of a burning smell but no power from the motor to turn the wheels. Ive tried 3 different batteries and ive turned the wheels by hand to seem if anything is tight, im not really sure how free they should feel but seem ok really. Where is my problem coming from ? It has to be from within the gearbox doesnt it ? theres been no reason to look in there since i built it back in 1986 and i dont really want to have to now but i guess if you guys are in agreement with me then ill have to, or maybe theres somebody out there whos experienced this and can give me a few pointers ?

Ok, im pretty sure hes set his mind on a Pick Up truck, so what do you think... Stadium Thunder or Stadium Blitzer or Sand Shaker You guys will know this - the first two are 2WD and the third is 4WD, how much difference will this make ? Bashing around on our driveway, some times down on a small field next to our house, maybe the odd time on a BMX track or similar. Will the battery last longer with the 2WD or Should i go with a Buggy - Neo Scorcher or even a Re-Re Boomerang to match my already owned original 'vintage' Boomerang ???
-
Thanks for your help but I’m not sure what you mean by ‘end up buying two kits’ ??? But I’m loving the idea of the Stadium Thunder, my son will love the fact that it’s a Pick Up truck. Now where do I find one of them ? His birthday is only 2 weeks away !

Thanks for your thoughts, please excuse my ignorance but what is a TT02B ? I’ve googled it but keep seeing a number of different models mentioning TT02B ? Is it like a standard chassis that a number of different bodies fit to ? If yes, I’m liking the idea of that, which bodies fit it then ? Would any pick up bodies fit too ?
-
Thanks for the idea but I don’t really want to buy him an original as he’s going to end up bumping into anything in sight (I know this as it’s currently happening) and spare parts will (already are) going to be a problem. Gotta be a new model/re release.
-
Now the fun part, im going to buy my son one of his own. Not really sure what to go for ? We are only going to 'bash' [i dont like that phrase but i think its the descriptive one to use?] them around on the driveway and maybe the field next to the house [?]. Im been drawn to a Re-Release Boomerang but only because i have the original that is still working [kind of, but that's another story] and thought as we are most likely going to start racing each other it's probably the closest we are going to get performance wise [speed and handling] other than buying 2 brand new ones [unfortunately i dont have another Sand Scorcher to sell]. He says he likes the Pick Up Trucks [no particular model] but i was kind of thinking that the boomerang would be better on the tarmac but the pick up better on the grass but neither will be equal on the same ground, what would you guys suggest ? Or do you have a better car/truck in mind ?
-
Hello again, the Sand Scorcher has now gone, hopefully to somebody who will have the time, experience and inspiration to rebuild it for their chosen purpose, fun times ahead for sure, thanks to everybody that helped me achieve my sale and at a fair price, it is very much appreciated.

Thought id already replied to this ? Any reason why it may not of got posted [or removed] ? The metal plate on the bottom is showing some wear but it is just from general use and regular wear and tear from grounding/bottoming out, there is no structural weakening [that will cause any issues with performance or handling] & id imagine that every model like this would have similar wear [if its been used & not just on display ?] Thanks for you interest & sorry but i'm a newbie [i guess you could call me a Re-Re Rc'r, lol] but im not sure what an SRB is ?

Boomerang 1986 ish Motor Expired - What can I replace with
MrDGH111 replied to MrDGH111's topic in All things electric...
Thanks for the answer, yes it has got hot hasnt it, strange too when i disassembled it i noticed that the green wire was to yellow and the yellow wire was to green ??? Im guessing all this would of done would of reversed the motor ??? What i mean is moving the joystick forward must of sent the car in reverse and vice versa ? Cant think why that was necessary but it was 30+ years ago and i probs. just found it as an instant solution maybe ? Ref. your info. about the 'HPI' option - I dont really want to have to start changing too many things [or risk putting stress on the rest of this vintage] so just a quick and easy motor replacement i think will be the way to go, plus if i keep the speed down i have an excuse ready for when my 6 year old gets behind the wheel of his own and starts 'kickin my ***' lol. Already asked this question but because there are so many options out there which standard motor would you go with, what i mean is which suppliers have you guys had most success with ?
