  1. Remember you are meant to charge lipos in a bag. I've got one of these https://www.modelsport.co.uk/overlander-rc6-vsr-80watt-7a-output-ac-dc-lipo-balance-charger/rc-car-products/408440 nothing flash but seems to do the job, for my nimhs anyway. Chargers are weird, if you look around you'll see one named "b6" from various manufacturers, they are all clones and indeed the overlander I have has the exact same menus and options. You often see them being called SkyRc iMax - I think this is the original manufacturer (but not sure), anyway as with everything from China there are lots of clones about and I remember watching a video of a guy who pulled a couple of them apart to find build quality differed quite significantly, I also remember a post on a rc forum where a university bought a couple of chargers and because its a workplace had to have them PAT tested, which they failed right out of the box. I'm pretty sure at one time banggood were selling the skyrc unit and the clone side by side.. My theory on the overlander was to buy something from a decent uk shop and actually overlander are a uk company although the products are made in China (well, I'd be amazed if they weren't). The hope being to avoid the very low end of the market and rely on the safety standards in uk / eu. Give the current/heat etc that goes on with charging batteries I didn't really want to take chances and have a battery or charger starting a fire.. Might never happen, but if it did you'd regret not spending the extra £20..
  2. I looked up the receiver that OP has, far as I can tell it will blik if unpaired and be solid when paired, I assumed it was on solid, but yes if its blinking you need to pair it! My thinking was that provided the receiver light is on solid the receiver has power, so regardless of the ESC the steering servo should work, unless broken/defective ? I don't have any experience of absima stuff - could there be setup on the transmitter required ?
  3. Needed some flysky receivers, so looked on ebay as usual and found most sellers quoting long lead times (one said expected delivery date in August!) but there was one seller that had location of London although obviously Chinese, probably a drop shipper. Expected 29th May = 1st June, but they arrived yesterday. Worked out £6.50 or so each, so a bit more than usual but much cheaper than the £15 I saw uk model shops asking ! Received part of an order from time tunnel models today, the packing note says that the other bits I ordered will follow - "There is a container due in to the UK on the 25th May and we will have stock of parts the next week". So if you are waiting for bits from UK supliers they may turn up in a couple of weeks. Had stuff from JK-RC and RC Bearings turn up in a few days, so no big deal there.
  4. Started putting the low rider pumpkin together, forgot to take a pic, but you all know what they look like!
  5. The body will come in black plastic, it has a semi sheen finish. Some people just put the stickers on and call it done, but imho it doesn't look that good. So, you prime and paint, or prime, paint clear or maybe just paint! up to you. I'm still not sure which way to go (I have a pumpkin & others to do). I have seen people just polish the plastic with compounds to make it look glossy. Yes, stickers are a separate sheet and won't come with the body (nor will any of the chrome bits). I have a sticker set on order with time tunnel models currently, apparently a new shipment of stuff is coming in to the UK next week.
  6. if the steering servo doesn't work it would indicte an issue with the radio gear rather than the ESC. Is the servo pligged in to channel 1 and ESC in channel 2 on the receiver?
  7. 280mm sounds big, the TL/TT and RA chassis are 257mm and take a 190mm shell. I'm wondering if that shell is more 1/8th size ? Did a search and found this: https://www.hpiracing.com/en/kit/924 appears to be too wide for your body though ? I don't think you'd find a tamiya chassis to fit, maybe some of the nitro stuff ? don't know much about those.
  8. TT cars were designed as road cars but them adapted it with different suspension arms etc to put buggy bodies on them, they did the same thing previously with the TL-01 chassis. TT-02 road chassis TT-02B, same basic chassis but longer arms and shocks etc
  9. DT is a 2WD buggy, TT are on road or drift, apart from the TT-02B which is a buggy. DT-01 https://tamiyabase.com/chassis/64-dt-01 DT-02 https://tamiyabase.com/chassis/104-dt-02 DT-03 https://tamiyabase.com/chassis/149-dt-03 TT-02 https://tamiyabase.com/chassis/145-tt-02 Note the chassis variants tab. OP has mentioned the Plasma Edge, which is a 4WD buggy on the DF-02 chassis https://tamiyabase.com/tamiya-models/58399
  10. Wouldn't worry too much about availability - just go on ebay and do a search, then look at tamico.de, t2shop.de. tonystamiyaparts will order anything you need provided it is available at the supplier. There is a fox manual here: http://tamiyakits.blogspot.com/2011/03/tamiya-fox-build-manual.html as always it has a parts listing at the back, so you can look for those part numbers. According to Tamiyabase the chassis is shared with the novafox too. Far as everything else goes - radio gear I use flysky which I don't have any problems with and is pretty cheap everything is 2.4Ghz now, no crystals! and no interfernce between multiple cars. For an ESC if you buy a new kit most of them have one included now, but if you find something that doesn't the Hobbywing 1060 will do everything you need. All the rest will be quite familiar..
  11. Yep, it was JK-RC I saw that had them, currently listing TT02 for £70 anf TT02E for £60 https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/m.html?&_ssn=jk-rc&_sop=3 He's also got a listing for touring car shells.
  12. The fox isn't currently available, so you'd have to buy a used car and fix up whatever needed repairing. There are specialist parts suppliers like tonystamiyaparts975 on ebay and jk-rc who do seem to have bits for them. There is one on ebay now, but its quite pricey.. I would say get him a DT03 (like the rising fighter) or a TT-02B based buggy that are a bit more modern. Lets be honest - there's no way you're going to get him a car and then stand and watch him playing with it, so best get yourself something too... stuff like hornet/grasshopper/frog are available new if you wish, but also have lots of spares support. You could look at getting one off ebay and tidy it up, there are always abandoned cars and those old classic buggys are fairly affordable. imho, initially at least stick to brushed motors and nimh batteries, cheaper and especially in the case of batteries much easier to handle. Whatever you end up with I'd just do some light upgrades like bearings and leave it at that, if he enjoys it the tinkering to upgrade with pocket money / birthday presents etc is much of the fun growing up with RC cars !
  13. Here I go again with some ebay fodder.. these were pretty cheap on ebay and an idle bid near the end saw them on their way to me.. The pumpkin appears to be an original as it has the Ford script on the tail and the old style ends on the steering arms. It has CVA shocks. Problems ? one rear shock mount is stripped, the glass has a crack in it and two body mounts are broken. I thought the servo was broken because moving the wheels didn't drive its motor but upon looking closer the C clip for the servo saver is missing and one of the steering arms has a healthy bend in it.. I wonder if those two are related ? Other than that, its pretty tidy. The paint isn't bad, but I want to go back to box art. You'll notice the bumpers have been painted and the spotlights are missing.. the lunch box shell is unpainted but stickered, its actually in pretty good nick, with some road rash on one back corner. It has metal bearings but is missing the motor and motor mount. It had the 5th shock mod installed, but the shock is too long for its spring and the two arn't well matched at all. The worst damage was on one of the rear axle mounts, where the mount screws in to the tub the piece of plastic where the screw holes had snapped out, so whilst it looked ok the mount on that side wasn't really attached at all. The bit was still screwed in to the mount and fitted back in to the tub well, so I glued it in place and it seems fairly solid, we'll see how it goes. The tub its a bit rough though, someone made bigger holes in the rear, I assume to pass the motor wires through and it also has a hole in front of the servo. Nore minor issues ? the wheelie bar wheel consists of a couple of pieces of brass. Curiously the rear pair of body mounts also appear to be brass, they are good reproductions of the stock plastic part, I wonder if they are mass produced or someone made them on a small lathe.. Already arrived is a D parts sprue, frm this the lunch box gets the motor mount and a shock mount, the pumpkin gets a new rear shock mount. JK-RC is selling new tubs with front bumper for £5, so I ordered one, be silly not to at that price. have not decided if the lunch box will get this yet or if I'll just keep it in case the repair I did fails. Also, the 3x30mm screws & nuts for the motor mount. I have ordered a glass set and chrome parts for the pumpkin and I also ordered a complete body set for my other lunchbox, so this one can have the body pegs. When I did my other CW-01s a coule of years ago I used www.3dhubs.com to print a gearbox brace to prevent the axle moving and a strut brace for the front, this cost about £8 for two sets, here they are: I found the stl models on thingiverse. So, I returned to the site to find they've changed things - they no longer use an army of hobbyists to print stuff. When I made up an order not only were parts more expensive - at least three times the price they also slapped a £60 surcharge on the order! After looking around, getting stuff printed is a bit of a struggle. I eventually found www.thirty6.co.uk who have a minimum order of £20. I've ordered x2 gearbox braces, x2 strut braces, 8 lunch box body pegs (spares) and two of each pumpkin body mount. the D parts sprue above also has the wheelie bar wheel on it, but both cars need one, so I set to with sketchup to try and draw a new one, struggled with the curved wheel so asked a friend who does CAD for a living and he sent me a file in 2 minutes flat. After a quick adjustment (he got the measurement wrong and it was 10 times the size it should be!) a few of these were added to the printing order. If the item turns out okay, I'll put the stl on thingiverse. I use flysky radios, so some receivers are on order I still need to get a motor for the lunch box, one of my other cars has a HPI Firebolt 15T, they're cheap enough but don't know if I want to go that low, maybe something around a 20T would suffice? Need a couple of ESCs too - I've used Hobbywing 1060s before which work fine, but the wires going to the motor are rather short and its a bit of a stretch in these chassis, so not sure what to go for..Don't really see the point in big power / brushless / lipo in these, they aren't exactly the pinnacle of handling s it is. The pumpkin will go black, have chrome parts sprue on order. Not sure on the body, was thinking green from the alternative body work box art. Not owrried about that just yet.
  14. I haven't yet run one with oil shocks, so can't say for sure. What I can tell you is using the gearbox brace / clip to stop the axle sliding up and down is certainly worth it. I had this one from thingiverse printed https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2317376 I haven't experimented but I've read that putting foam in the tyres helps to stop it bouncing quite so much.
  15. To be honest, its probably not worth taking the time to try and fix that shell, they are very cheap to replace, a black one is £10 in the UK. Edit: oh and it mostly certainly isn't "factory" whatever that means - its just a regular body that someone painted and then smashed.
  16. Thanks to both. maybe what I'll do is get the stickers off and check for scratches/damage and then decide to use primer. I think the other bodies will be ok, but there are quite a lot of lines and detail to a lunchbox, so sanding might take a while... Might do some reading on airbrushes too, see if I can change the needle and get a wider fan, but likely to still use cans on the lunch box I think.
  17. I have a bunch of ABS bodies to paint (lunch box, pumpkin x2, monster & blitzer beetles). They are most likely to all go with the box art colours - so is it worth priming them or go striaght to paint ? how many people use clear after the colour ? I've read split opinions on stickers under or over clear - underneath will prevent peeling I guess but will cause more work to get a smooth finish ? I do have an airbrush, but its very fine and I'm thinking I need a much bigger spray pattern to do bodies of this size. Maybe I'll just use that for detail - window frames etc. If I go with TS paints and will probably colour sand between coats will I get one shell done out of a single can ? Some bodies already have stickers on (applied by previous owners), which I will replace - any tips for removal ? Thanks
  18. CW-01 tub which might/might not get used and a set of D parts which will from JK-RC and a 3x30mm screws for the motor mount. To come: x3 flysky receivers bearing set for midnight pumpkin & a lowride 3D printed lunch box body mounts, pumpkin body mounts, strut braces, gearbox clip and wheelie bar wheels Lunch box C & E parts, body and set of stickers for a pumpkin, C parts for a pumpkin To order: x1 motor - not sure what to get x2 Speed controllers - again, not sure what to get. I have used hobbywing 1060s before, which are fine but the motor wries are a bit short for the CW-01 shell. Paint : Yellow (lunchbox), Black (pumpkin), Red (monster beetle) + a bunch of different pots for details. Blitzer beetle stickers, monster beetle stickers.
  19. I've just put in a 3d printing order for: x2 CW-01 gearbox braces x2 CW-01 strut braces x4 CW-01 wheelie bar wheels x8 Lunch Box body pegs x2 sets of Midnight Pumpkin body mounts A couple of years ago I used 3dhubs to print some of this stuff, it was preally good because the job was farmed out to a hobbyist with a printer and they'd complete the order and post it. It was really cheap too, the gearbox / strut braces were £1-2 each. Seems 3dhubs have changed their business model and don't use local printers any more. When I did a quote they slapped a £63 surcharge on the order! what a joke. I've found another supplier () who is pretty cheap, but does have a minimum order charge of about £19, hence ordering what I need and then spare sets of body mounts to bulk up the order. Hopefully it all works out, although the ordering system seems ot have a glitch just at the moment with the order status.
  20. I bought a flysky stick controller, its really meant for aircraft, like that one. You will need to lock the sticks so they only move in one direction and ensure they have a self return spring (this is all available for the flysky, don't know about that one) also, rotate the steering one 90 degrees to give you left/right instead of up/down. It seems the sticks are out of fashion now unlike when I was a kid. Long live the Futaba Attack R sets! Actually, take a look around there was a thread where someone took an old stick radio and retrofitted the guts of a modern 2.4Ghz set. Basically he just used the potentiometers of the new radio gear in the old sticks, I thought it was a good idea.
  21. I saw this on tamico the other day and I'm sure I saw something similar at a UK retailer too (don't remember which one). The way I read it is its a non boxed TT-02 chassis kit, no body, no wheels/tyres. Pretty cheap I think? https://tamico.de/navi.php?a=190586&lang=eng Edit: ah, shows as not available now. They were the other day. if I can find the uk retailer again I will post.
  22. Need the end cap to the motor mount for a lunch box / pumpkin. This is part B2, I believe the same part is B9 for a grasshopper and maybe others ? Thanks
  23. Slightly different question, my MB needs a need servo saver, the C clip on mine is weak and opens up when the serbo turns, which means loads of play in the steering. Was going to get a kimbrough, but don't know what size - medium? large ? heavy duty ? not sure which one would fit. The chassis on mine is an original and thus far I haven't had any drivetrain sisues, but the braces could be a good idea so would appreciate a link too please.
  24. I saw a built lowride pumpkin go on ebay for £127, thought it was a bit crazy given new kits are £130. Made some enquiries to find that its discontinued and many places don't have stock. Found this one so decided to get it rather than miss out. The CW-01s are ebay specials, they were pretty cheap. Re-release Lunchbox has a non painted shell, bearings and 5th shock and a broken front shock mount. Pumpkin is an original with CVAs and a knackered servo. Will probably repaint to stock. Should keep me out of trouble for a while... Edit: pumpkin servo is fine, its just the servo saver is missing the C clip, think I may have a spare somewhere. Does have a bent steering arm though. The lunchbox has a damaged chassis, where the rear axle mount slides in the two screw holes are snapped out, luckily the bit was there and fits well, so I've glued it in, hopefully it'll take.
