Upgrade to ball bearings on QD monster beetle
Andreascanr replied to Andreascanr's topic in Vintage Tamiya Discussion
I thought. What the heck, how hard can it be so I tried it and I succeded!! My girlfriend asked if changing to ball bearings was actually necessary and I told her it’s a childhood dream. I was drooling over the catalog with bearings, studded tires and oil dampeners. Now as an ”adult” I could afford it. :-) It feels a little bit faster....maybe :-) Thanks for the help! -
Upgrade to ball bearings on QD monster beetle

Thank you but I can’t see the picture (or I don’t understand what picture you mean). But you are sauing that it’s easy to open it up and change to ball bearings inside the gearbox? The gears aren’t going to fall out or something when I open it? -
Hi! Hope I’m posting in the correct place. Otherwise I would appreciate directions. I’ve got a QD Monster beetle from the early nineties. It has nylon bushings (I think thats what they are called). I have now bought ball bearings for it and I am going to install them. Four on the front wheels I understand and two on the back wheels. Where are the other two going? Inside the gearbox? How hard is it to change those two? Is it easy or can I accidentaly break something? Where do I open the car to access the last two nylon bushings? thanks in advance! Andreas

I have tried it now with a really really short antenna on the transmitter and a piece of piano-wire om the reciever and it works! My son (and me ofcourse) LOVES IT! It hasn't got the same reach as when I was a kid but it works. I will find a longer antenna to fix it. Btw! Batteries nowadays are a badword of a lot better than in the nineties! Thanks again for the help!

Thanks for all the great answers and your time. I heard from my local rc-shop that it is really important that the antennas are the exact right length and width. Do you mean that it works even with a slightly shorter antenna?

Hi! I am so glad to have found this forum! Hopefully someone can help me out here. I have an old Tamiya QD monster beetle from the early early 90s. It’s missing both transmitter and receiver antennas. They broke of many years ago. Now I have a six year old son who would love to play with the old car. Would it be possible for someone to help me out with measuring the antennas exact length? That way I would be able to order spares. //Andreas (a hopeful dad) :-)
