  1. Only the basic gear set is taken directly from TL-01 - you can use speed tuned gears, but the little spur gear is reversed on MF-01X, resulting in reduced teeth contact with the counter gear, caused by slightly different teeth geometry.

The rest of parts is more M-05/6 - diff internals, outdrives, suspension, even most of inner gearbox shafts.

Diff cups are also shared with TT-02S - there's also a reinforced part available.

It would be nice if the manual + compatible upgrade list was released

CompetitionX channel has unboxing video, where they listed through the manual. I think that release info contained some info about compatible upgrade parts, mostly ones that are shared with XV-02 - differentials, steering, suspension mounts. Double cardan will be probably combination of M-05 DJC swing shafts and M-07 wheel axles.

  3. The gearbox looks great! Do you think it would be possible to move the spur a bit lower? It might reduce motor movement necessary to adjust gears. It would also move the counter gear a bit higher, further from the motor, so you could add a wall to fully enclose the gearbox.

Can someone with an m05 let me know how wide the gear diff isplease? I suspect this will need changing.

I don't have an M-05 ball diff (I built mine using FF-03 outdrives and Sakura diff gear), but its gear is about the half the width of the stock diff gear. So it's not necessary to modify it, however, keeping the transmission compatible with either TA02 or M-05 gear diff will allow you to use other diff options, like R-evo differential case.

Still, it's a decent first look. Need to get some 1510 bearings. I can push some 1050 bearings into them and run the ff01 diff for now.

M-05 solves this by using plastic bushings that fit 1150 bearings, in the case that gear diff is used. It's part of uprights tree (51393, 51425, 9000815), so it's quite cheap readily available option.

Are you thinking of making your own?

Yep, I'd like to give it a try, although it probably won't be easy. Thanks :)

@Pylon80 thank you, I had a similar thoughts, these wires can be sourced quite easily and cheap from hobby stores, but I can imagine they won't be easy to bend the diameter used on M-05.

I can get a measurement for you tonight. Actually I believe I already did and posted them in "the postman brought me" for the benefit of another member.

    Thank you!

I found your photos of the assembly manual, that's extremely helpful as well :)

Unfortunately, I cannot find diameter measurements..

Does somebody know (and/or have a picture) of what a full hopped-up FF-02 looks like?

I wanted to suggest M-03R (silver or blue metal plated chassis) as an inspiration, but when I searched for some pictures, I found @Juls1's build

Looks like there's every M-03/TL-01 hopup available, except for the most recent sealed gear diff update :)

There was also a similar metal plated chassis for M-05/V.2 and 3racing alu/carbon extension to 257, but calling that FF-02 would be probably stretch 😃

  7. I skipped the last race due to weather, so first race of the V2 was this weekend. And it was quite successful. Well, except for another broken front arm. Luckily I have printed couple of spares. I got TL-01 hinge pins for the future interation, which should help to hold the printed parts together .

I know I should've used firmer dampers on this surface, but I love how it leans into corner 😃

  8. Browsing through the Internet, I found an interesting post on Xitter from 2020. I wasn't the first to try convert MF-01X to mid-rear motor setup. Using the rear half of TL-01 was an idea I considered, but I didn't like the limited gearing and exposed motor. Nevertheless, this conversion is very well done and looks great.

Interesting about the different part number. Perhaps different material, same tool?

I'd love to know that too. And if it's a different material, is it better or worse? Or maybe there's just a little difference in tolerances...

I think what it does is make the diff a little lighter at the expense of a little bit more play/less smoothness?

My guess is, that two gears, will cause less increase in locking force at higher left/right difference speed. Alternatively, similar to Tamiya, recent buggies use ball diff again, which has more or less constant force regardless of speed difference.

Funnily enough, years ago, I found that my rally TB03 was faster with ball diffs than gear diffs. Back then, I though it was because of poor quality of 3rd party gear diff (it was before TB-04), but it seems, that there's something good about ball diff on low traction.

The XV-02 diff actually uses the bevels from the TRF420 diff (as I recently found)

I thought that, too, but XV-02 uses a different PN (10015174) and TRF gears (51567) aren't shown as compatible in the parts matching list...

I recently found out that buggy racers run only 2 small bevel gears on dirt. Interestingly that's exatly the setup of TT-02 metal differentials, although I'm not sure what's advantage of that solution

We didn't get to an answer then, but in hindsight @Honza's suggestion of something to try is, I think, exactly what you've ended up doing (although I can't see the video he linked to and I can't remember what was on it).

Yep, it's exactly this product. I don't know why the video went private. I made an update in the topic.

It's cool that these old Tamiyas got option for more modern diff design. @wtcc5 confirmed that it should work with most Tamiyas that use same diff internals.

Well, I dried out the black PETG filament and went to Prusa default temperatures at the same time, so not scientific and I don't know what improved it but something did.

It could be both. High temperature can cause excessive stringing, which then causes filament to adhere to nozzle and deposit randomly. Same with wet filament, that causes bubbles. Good telltale of wet filament is purge after filament load.

The IKEA cabinet looks great. I still haven't got into making mine 😃

But who know, they could be a different module but same outside diameter and bore and actually fit. I will give it a try!

If they are coarser module, they might be even stronger. In the worst case, you can fit the entire differential.

  14.  TB-04 or TA06 steel bevel set don't fit. And XV-02 has different bevel gear set from TRF420 and derived models.

Early oil filled diff in TT-02RS used #51144 TG-10 gear set. Since XV-02 diffs are similar, maybe that could fit? Unfortunately that PN is not present in any Tamiya matching set, so I cannot confirm it.
