  1. The main product was patience...! Besides that, here's what I used. Oil based white Sharpie, it needs quite a few coats to turn up like this but worth it. It sticks well and if ran will last for quite a few outings. It's the best product in my experience so far, exceeding even some purpose made tire markers that I've tried a while ago. I achieved the red and yellow parts with a few very light coats of normal yellow and red Sharpie over the white oil based one. Pretty sure the oil based version comes in yellow too, not sure about red. In any case I recommend white background under the coloured spots, it's probably the only way to get it like this since the tires are black.
  2. Yep, I've been looking at those products for a while now. Apparently they also work well, besides looking the part. I wonder if they would ship to Canada, for some reason I've been lazy about asking if they do.
  3. This question hits where it hurts 🀣 The original plan was -and technically, still is- to run them, but who am I kidding... I love how they look now and it took me a while to get the lettering done, so it would make sense to keep them pristine at this point. I do have another set of Bridgestone and of course there's the kit tires too, but I lack the rims. I might just get a set of white pepper pot wheels so I can run the extra tires I have. I'm afraid this line of thought will be applied to the whole buggy by the time I finish it the more effort I put in the builds, the harder it gets to run the models after. But I also really want to see them come to life, which is what they are meant to do! A common conundrum of our hobby I guess.
  4. Nice thread! I carry my RC cars around very often, so for me it's more about functionality than looks. I usually have two ways about it: -my trusty 30-liter backpack (which I use daily also for everything else, from work gear to skateboarding gear) is my go to choice when I decide to bike or walk to the playground. It can carry a car + remote, batteries and some basic tools, in a comfortable and discreet way. This allows me to run a buggy and then stop for other activities on the way back or, even better, it allows me the freedom to just bike away from my neighborhood and go explore new playgrounds further away, therefore merging some good physical activity with the joys of RC. -when longer distances and driving my 1:1 are involved, I pack eveything up like this, and just shove it behind my driver's seat so it stays nice and snug. Not the fanciest looks, I know, but it works great. Inside that bag are not only the basics (car, batts, remote) but also charger, spare parts, optional wheels, a small toolbox, various props for postal racing, and even calipers and an emergency soldering iron. I went through two road trips with this setup and even then was always self sufficient. I usually double bag the car, so at first glimpse it looks like some sort of hobo bag, hence not attracting the attention that I always strive to avoid, especially when the car is parked somewhere out of sight. Both methods allow me to carry any of my cars exept for the monster truck. That bad boy's got a bag of his own (from the dollarstore that is, to keep things looking cheap ). I'm satisfied with my carrying method. That being said, I would abandon it any day for one of those aforementioned vintage Beatties bags. They are so, soo cool. For that much style, I would gladly forget about functionality...
  5. Finished the sidewall lettering on my Mid tires this morning. New kicks ready to go! Heading out of town now, hoping to get some good RC action this afternoon.
  6. Today I worked on the tire sidewall lettering on my Mid. Almost done, not just yet as it took me longer than usual. Got a bit annoyed with two orders gone wrong. One was a transmitter/receiver set that I got as backup, lost in hyperspace so I got a refund, and will have to order it again somewhere else. The other, and more important right now, is a tiny tube of elusive green slime. That too was lost on the way, seller agreed to re-ship, so I'm waiting to see how/when and if he'll do it πŸ™„πŸ˜¬βš‘ On a better note, I went out for a walk with my wife in the afternoon since the weather was finally good today, and I brought the loyal Manta Ray along. Great fun at the park.
  7. @ThunderDragonCy Stunning HS2, mate! Great job! Same for you @Willy iine with your Bug, how lovely it came out I really like that colour, perfect for that body. Is it called corsa gray? My mama used to have a baby blue coloured one when I was a kid 🀩 it was old, stinky, it'd drop parts on the way (I think I remember seeing light through the floor) and we absolutely loved it until its last day.
  8. Today I finished the driver for my Optima Mid and installed it in the car. It's loosely based on Akira Kogawa, father of the Optima dynasty... or at least that was my intention πŸ˜… It was fun to paint up my first Kyosho driver. Very interesting to see the different style/vibe compared to Tamiya. Here it is nestled nice and snug in the car, attached with a bit of velcro strap on both sides so it's removable and, if needed, adjustable. Body shell test also passed, all clear with the driver not in the way. I'll take better photos with natural light, and of course once the buggy is finished.
  9. MB looks cracking πŸ€©πŸ€™βœŒπŸ‘
  10. Thank you, mate. I live in Canada. Relocated here for work. I am Italian though and sometimes, like in these situations, I do miss my home Country immensely!πŸ˜…
  11. My RC plans for today have been kinda ruined after what happened last night. We went to a friends' party, and while driving home at 2 AM I had a flat tire. I tried to replace it myself (like most ppl, done it more than once before) at -20 Β°C with the car's provided tool, it was no fun and I just stripped it open like a tin can Apparently at Jeep they don't take salt and harsh climate into account when choosing which metal to use for their cars' tools, despite the "North Edition" badge on the sides of my car. So we called roadside assistance, which eventually graced us with their presence 2 and a half hours later. They also had to use special tools as a couple nuts were stuck! Salt and frost will do that... Got back home at 6 AM, frozen to the core of our soul!! πŸ˜“ and yet we were "lucky" in the unlucky event: had it happened just the night before, we would have had to deal with -39 Β°C ! Spent most of today recovering from the cold spell and trying to remind myself why I've decided to relocate to a country where you can turn into a popsicle for a flat tire... not in the best spirits right now ahah πŸ˜… I did work a bit on my Optima's driver, but I felt much like a zombie hovering over a table in some B movie. Oh well, at least I didn't do any mistakes! The potential is high when you are in such state.
  12. Good idea. Works for me, since the body shell came out right this means I officially won't need any further paint cans for this build keep it simple for once, I like that ✌
  13. Wow, just saw this, and wasn't quite prepared for that... Way to go Tamiya πŸ˜ƒ finally, this looks awesome, and a very interesting new platform. I think it's the first time I get so excited by a brand new buggy release. Maybe it will come with some top level box art like the TD4! Edit: it does!
  14. Another shell for different colour options, as well as to use as a runner, is always good to have for sure. Although part of me sort of struggles with the idea of a chassis-less body: I did that with my Hornet, fancy shell for the shelf and the kit one for running, that was the idea but I suspect that my perception of the deal has changed in time! I now have my Hornet sitting on the livingroom shelf with its battered original body on, while the fancy pants one is just hanging on the wall in another room, clearly waiting for a chassis to pop up someday πŸ˜… Anyway, good point mentioning the undertay, since I pretty much forgot about it once I started the build. I do have the short one from TBG. It's a nice snug fit with both the chassis and the body shell, which is great, but unfortunately it doesn't cover the front and end of the chassis, which annoys me quite a bit. At least it will do a great job protecting the essentials (electronics, battery..) and for the parts still exposed I think I will apply an industrial film I often use for work. Picture a sticker, but fully transparent and comes in glossy or mat finish. Thickness would be enough to protect the chassis from light scratches. What I'm not sure of, is whether to paint the undertray or not. While I'm not a fan of unpainted wings, for some reason I tend to imagine an undertray just being transparent πŸ€” no big deal, I'll see. Will you fit one in your Mid?
  15. Found a little time for my Mid today. The last portion of the build is going so slow πŸ˜… not that I mind, I'm in no rush, but aesthetics aside the car has been pretty much ready to go for the past three weeks, so I'm really feeling the itch to run it by now. It's going to have to wait a little longer, as I also want to rebuild the shocks before I power it up, but that elusive green sludge hasn't showed up yet! Today I kept working on the driver. Some major cutting had to be done in order for the helmet to clear the canopy, and that in turn required further modification in order to still be able to mount the head. At least now everything fits nicely and it looks not too crammed in there. I had to tap a hole on the side of the helmet so that the mounting screw could clear the belt cover, fortunately there was some inner extra thickness to work with from the mold. A lot of extra work to gain a few millimeters, but worth it. After that, I masked and primed the fella. I did smooth down his nose just a tiny bit 😏 Here's the masked piece, looking a little weird but I decided to do a mix of painting and use the provided stickers too, so will see how it turns out. It's now primed and waiting to dry up. Last but not least, painted the body shell using a half can of PS-1 that I found in my paints box. I've used it to the very last drop, so now I'm crossing my fingers that the coats will ne enough so that I don't have to rush to get another one! I like the clean and simple design of this body a lot. I wish I could have many of these shells for many different colours and liveries πŸ˜€
  16. Right on! Car looks ace mate, the extra black behind the front window really enhances box artπŸ‘
  17. I like pretty much all categories, but for me vintage off road buggies (2 or 4WD) takes the cake. I would love to try racing with other people on a rally/offroad/tarmac track, as others said above it would be hard to beat!
  18. Good idea, thank you and I totally agree.I did exactly that with my Terra Scorcher and I love it. It is definitely one of the possible options for the Mid, though at this point I think that I will opt for the original box art's palette, most likely with some subtle variations. Agree also with @Kol__, you're right bud, a second body shell is required πŸ˜‰
  19. I've been thinking about what graphics to do on my Optima Mid. Not just today, but for the past 8 months! It's almost as if some part of me wanted to do something different at all costs, with all those new built Mids popping out every day on the web, looking all a bit similar. Some of the ideas I came up with really grew on me, but I noticed that I kept going back to box art no matter what. Even my wife, which usually supports all my esthetic choices, bluntly dismissed box art this time(Mid too Hornet-y! Turbo Mid too Lego-y πŸ˜…), prompting me to go for one of my -by now many- alternative color schemes. Still, after pondering for way too long, here I am again, holding the kit stock decal sheet in my hands, lingering in admiration. I think I've finally realized something: I am most likely overthinking it, and my Mid should probably just be like the one I used to glimpse on the higher shelf in the hobby shop as a kid. I would drool over it and fuel up on excitement enough to daydream for weeks after that, and that car was box art. If I just look at that "Arizona Desert Rat" sponsor sticker, symbolizing something so out of reach back then, I feel like I'm 10 again 😁 A very wise forum member said something that resounded with me recently, while completing his gorgeous Turbo Scorpion... I think it was along the lines of: "Nothing wrong with box art me..." @Re-Bugged thanks so much for the enlightenment bud, I think I will wholeheartedly adopt your philosophy on the matter for this one πŸ˜‰βœŒ
  20. Time Tunnel is directly responsible for getting me back into RC a few years ago: my Hornet comes from there. I remember being a bit confused at first and asking them a few questions about charging times and such stuff. Their customer service was impeccable.
