Metallic paint backing technique question
Mario149 replied to Mario149's topic in General discussions
For my next buggy, I'm thinking about doing maybe just a single layer of metallic blue, followed by a couple of gunmetal. I'd almost want looking gunmetal with a hint of (sparkly) blue in it, rather than actually blue -

I would have thought so - this was done with translucent red apparently, so I imagine you'd get the same effect with green -
Ah, brilliant. Good to know, thanks!

Technically the last few days, but... 2wd and 4wd buggy cravings satisfied Sand Viper is actually already built (with a different paint job: https://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/index.php?/topic/94219-metallic-paint-backing-technique-question/&do=findComment&comment=803323) and I'm loving it

Metallic paint backing technique question
Mario149 replied to Mario149's topic in General discussions
So in case anyone was wondering, this is how she turned out. 2 coats of metallic red, followed my 2 of gunmetal. Needless to say I'm very pleased Decal colours seem to work with the colour as well I've got a Top Force that's just arrived and I'm tempted to do the same technique as above but swap out the metallic red for a metallic blue as I *really* don't like the box art green! -
Hang on, just checked, that is a different kit (57874) to the currently available Porsche RSR, so I'm guessing you don't get that set of decals in it, only the martini set...?

Still looks pretty good! Am now thinking that I may not even need the side decals, might make it look a bit cleaner. Decisions decisions!

Yeah, I've just found them too. I'm wondering if they can do the standard decal sheet, but just swap the red to orange. That said, the red on the RSR box art looks very orangey in every pic/video I've seen of it, so maybe I just go with red/blue colour scheme instead of orange/blue

I didn't, but I'd need them in orange anyway

Mario149 started following Metallic paint backing technique question and Where can I find Porsche decals?
-
I have a 911 RSR arriving in the next few days. My plan is to not do it as per the box art, but go for this colour scheme I've seen on the Singer website: As such, I'm looking for some basic decals with "Porsche" in orange etc on them. Can anyone point me in the direction of where I might be able to buy these?

Metallic paint backing technique question
Mario149 replied to Mario149's topic in General discussions
Hi Howards, good info, thanks. The dark shade of that Porsche is broadly what I'm aiming for. I've ordered metallic red and gunmetal, so fingers crossed. As when the car arrives and I paint it, I'll post it up here to show the (hopefully okay!) results -
Metallic paint backing technique question
Mario149 replied to Mario149's topic in General discussions
That is a very good idea! -
Hi all, I've been reading about backing metallic paint so as to make it lighter/darker/"metallic-ier" and had a few questions on exactly how to do it. For instance, I've read examples where people have done metallic red, then black or gunmetal. In those cases, how many layers of each paint would you do? The full 3 for each colour? Fewer? I've also read about people say doing 3 layers like metallic red, silver then finally black. Would that again be the full 3 layers each? Or something different? Any other tips/suggestions much appreciated!
