Sorry a little late with this one. Here we see the Hotshot take on the Thunder Dragon in the second race of the Finale. Can one of them join the Ultima at the top of the table??

So here is the run down of the rules for the Grand Finale for 2023. Hope this makes sense as I have tried a few ideas and this to me gives every car a far shot at victory!

Last Quarter Final until we get down to business in the Grand Finale! The classic Frog ORV chassis tries to beat the modified DT02 with a carbon fibre chassis and RZ motor! Going one way right everyone????-

Tamiya Thunder Dragon vs Tamiya Rising Fighter OR2023 Quarterfinal Match 3
We continue to progress through the Quarter Finals. This was the light side vs the dark side of my Star Wars inspired builds. The Thunder Dragon is such an enjoyable chassis to drive but I am impressed with my hopper up Rising Fighter too.

Complete retro mismatch on the track for match 2 of the Quarterfinals. I love my Grasshopper but there is no way it is beating the Ultima which is on another level in terms of 2WD capability.
It makes me wonder how good modern competition buggies are going to be!

So I thought it would be great to note some of the statistics from round 1 of the Orchard Raceway for those interested as we move into the Quarter Finals for 2023.
Running 16 cars in round one was the same as my entire first season on the OR in 2022. No buggy from 2022s Finale made it through the first round which was a complete shock to me.
Our slowest entry for 2023 was the CW01 Pumpbox recording a fastest lap of 10.17. However, it didn’t have the worst lap which was done by the DT03 (mainly down to my poor driving though!!)
Fastest lap in round one goes to last seasons champ the TT02B with 6.27. I was surprised that I couldn’t string together a full set of laps as the car has been so easy to drive in the past. However, the rules are set to try and mix things up a little each season.
Full list of lap times are below:
1. TT02B 6.27 OUT
2. DF03 6.33 OUT
3. Thunder Dragon. 6.63
4. Madcap. 6.93 OUT
5. Ultima. 7.17
5. Hotshot. 7.17
7. TD2. 7.34 OUT
8. Rising Fighter. 7.80
9. Holiday Buggy. 7.83
10. Cougar. 8.00 OUT
11. Frog. 8.11
12. Grasshopper. 8.17
13. DT03 8.30 OUT
14. Raider. 8.70
15. Mad Bull. 10.13 OUT
16. Pumpbox. 10.17 OUT
The Thunder Dragon surprised me. It is a really nice chassis to drive over the rough terrain of the Orchard Raceway and extreme predictable. It does not suffer on turning in quite like the Hotshot and leaves me excited to see how it will get on in the Quarters.
The Cougar should be a lot higher up this table and I know the issues now. I have a feeling it will be back as a very strong contender in 2024 (albeit with a new format but more on that later!!)
Of the cars that did over 10 laps the most consistent was the Kyosho Raider. Not sure if that was something to do with years of practice on that chassis as a kid or just a lucky run?? It was closely followed by the Thunder Dragon which at times felt on rails. It was also the TD that recorded the best average over 10 laps (8.01s)
I can’t wait to see what you all make of the Quarter Final runs and I will be back with some more stats at the end of those ahead of the Finale.
The Finale will take a different approach (one that is being adopted for 2024). Each car will compete in a head to head time trial against the other three. Three points awarded for a win, one each for a draw. There are bonus point’s available for fastest overall time and most number of laps completed. In the event of a points tie then average lap time over all complete laps will be taken into account.

We move into the Quarter Finals with the Hotshot drawing the Kyosho Raider. A complete mismatch other than they are both red!!

A modern 2WD classics goes against a proper 2WD classic! I love the TD2 against many opinions on the name it is a great chassis. The Ultima is just lovely!

Update time! I am a little behind. Here was an interesting first drive of my DF-03 which I think is a mighty fine drive and up there with the TT02B. Plus the Frog is very super cool 😎

22 hours ago, Gebbly said:Here are a few I really like :
https://www.youtube.com/@theoagrc is done by our own @Misterp180. He did some good videos showing his conversion of a small back garden space into a mini race track illustrating its possible for any of us to create a driving space. He also does time trials with his various cars on his track, The Orchard Raceway
He also discusses the cars and their hop ups. He is currently in a battle for fastest TT02 in the Poor Boys RC online challenge and he films the modifications and attempts which is also great for learning. They are nice calm videos instead of some of the loud shouty channels.
https://www.youtube.com/@MarkBryanRC is another calm Brit. He does a selection of different videos. I just recently watched 3 videos he did on hop ups and mods to improve a stock TT-02 for either road or rally running. Really good explanations and I used them when deciding on hop ups for my next build which is a TT-02. He is also taking part and filming his attempts for the Poor Boys RC online challenge and I think there is some fun rivalry between Mark and @Misterp180 in this challenge
What a lovely summary of out channels!! Was nice to see some positive feedback on our fun 🙌🏻
I started doing YouTube during the pandemic mainly after watching Mark Bryan and Vintage Backyard RC!! I enjoyed coming up with ideas to Vlog as much as the modelling part of the hobby. I then discovered a community of likeminded YouTubers who are passionate about their RC cars and helping others out with their builds etc. We swap cars, talk on other media, send spare parts and, most importantly, meet up and drive our RCs together (where possible!!)
I understand that there are two types of YouTube channels that I watch. The career guys trying to monetise their channel (which is a tough gig I am told!) and hobbyists who want to document their fun and connect with others.
Even doing this for fun it is a lot of hard work but I enjoy watching my own content and reliving that Madcap build (thanks @Kol__) or my TD2.
You can see from @Gebbly post that I also enjoy running my cars on a very basic garden track. I enjoyed RC as a boy but it is way more accessible as an adult hobby. Getting out and running some cars and then fixing those that are broken is something I plan on doing until I can’t! YouTube may or may not still be going as I get older but if it is I hope a few people still find it interesting.
PS - I also enjoy all the content on this great forum even if I don’t always comment! You all rock 🤘🏻-

Can’t say about the handling on the tarmac but I love my TD2. Performed really well on my YouTube Garden Track Series last year and is due to run in a few weeks for this season.
I find it is way more predictable than the DT-03 and sounds brilliant under power. You will need the hop up for the ball diff though as the plastic nut is made out of cheese!
The DT-03 is a great entry level car but once you start moving beyond that you see it for what it is. I found the DT-02 to be a better drive to be honest.
If you are running on tarmac consider swapping the tyres out for something more suitable.
Good luck with your research dude 🙌🏻

I have been getting into some speed runs recently with a TT02. While I am going through the process gradually trying to settle on a brushed motor before we start working on gearing and chassis improvements I thought I would share with this forum and gather any tips from the pros!
At the moment the chassis is stock (except for some rubber sealed bearings) and I am running a Etronixs 15T brushed motor on a NIMH 7.2v pack. I am pleased with the initial result of 25mph but there is more to come.
I am sticking with NIMH and brushed for now. I am going to be gearing up with the High Speed Gear set and I have a few body and chassis hop ups to try and improve things a little. No customisation yet!
It is becoming an addiction already swapping out the motor and seeing how much faster it goes. The TT02 is a tricky chassis to keep straight and I am searching for a new running spot away where it is straight and I can keep the speed at maximum for longer.
Any advice would be welcome.
Thanks
Craig
Chassis: TT02 (Tamiya 4wd Class)
Gearing: 70T Spur 22T Pinion
Battery: NIMH
Motor: Etronixs 15T
Speed: 25mph (40 kph)

Match 4 was brilliant and I was gutted that my Madcap is out for the season. Surely I am not also going to lose the Cougar to Derek the Holiday Buggy am I??

@Gebbly what a lovely start to my morning read of the forums. Many thanks and I am glad people are enjoying my musings and RC fun.
I certainly don’t do YouTube for the money, subs or watches but it is hard to ignore the numbers as things start to grow.
My intention was to log my fun getting back into the hobby and encourage my daughter to find ways to enjoy my hobby with me. It has largely worked because she loves playing with RC cars just like I did when I was an kid! I have reconsidered recently what this means in terms of my interaction with YouTube and the community. I don’t have the time or resources to try and do things in the way others do and nor do I want to now. For me there will be more time trials and the odd build journey and that will be me. Occasionally my daughter and I will have some fun with our cars and I will post so when I am older I can remember those good times too 😁
What I have enjoyed is a brilliant community of content creators who essentially are using the format as a way of interacting with the user base and sharing stories and their journey. Nice to see @Kai City RC sharing his views also. David is someone I chat too through the comments and his videos always inspire me to look at new models as they give me that Tamiya promo feel!
In relation to the original topic about Tamiya using the format to reignite their promo videos, I would love that!! How about they use people like David and promote the community from their pages and feeds?

Round 1 Match 3
Complete mismatch really but it was great fun! The Grasshopper got a surprising victory over the Mad Bill due to the lack of turning ability. This battle is likely to go the same.

Round 1 Match 2
Grasshopper vs Mad Bull
First round was an easy win for the Rising Fighter as I struggled to get the power down on the DT03.
I am not sure it is set up correctly and if it is going to be back in future seasons then I need to spend some time out on the track tuning the chassis before 2024.-
