The Le Mans 490 is fitted to my Scorpion, Turbo Scorpion and Tomahawk. It's a fantastic looking motor, but not fast by any means. I'd say it's not too far off a Tamiya Sport Tuned in terms of top end. My Optima runs a Kyosho G20, it's not much to look at (silver can with a sticker) but it's slightly quicker than the 490. My Javelin and Ultima run the Kyosho G15 Single. Another silver can with a sticker, but again very cheap. That thing is plenty fast for the 2WD buggies. All of the cars use Hobbywing 1060s (or the Kyosho branded equivalent) and I run them on 7.2 NiMH.

Always wondered what gear you ran in those Kyosho videos dude! I have an Ultima for next year and have been wondering what motor to get for it! The 490 motor looks so good but I was wondering about the performance of them.

It is hard to see how Tamiya can find that appeal to the younger generation as it did back in the day for many of us. I agree that licences would be expensive and would dilute the profits but might get kids hooked on the hobby and lead them into discovering more of the RCs we enjoy from yesteryear. Perhaps there is some way to bridge the gap into the digital world? RC game with real world models to match those on the screen. 🤔
I like what @stulec52 says above and we should all try and do what we can to keep the next generation interested. I am only running my cars in the back yard but I have been trying to engage my Daughter (5) in the hobby. She enjoys blasting a CW-01 about in the garden and on our track. I am hoping she is better at controlling it this year!!
She has recently decided she wants to build a car together so we’ll be getting something to sit at the table with through the rainy months in the spring and enjoy some hobby time together. We are lucky as she is more into crafts than anything else, so RC could be an extension of that for her. I fully expect her to bounce of it and onto something else as she gets older but then I did back in the early 90s (thanks Sony PlayStation!!)
Until that happens I am going to enjoy every second of it and keep enjoying my rediscovered hobby for as long as I can!

Interesting topic.
Lego went through a tough patch back at the start of the 00’s and had to turn their business model around to appeal to a new generation of children.
I would say that modelling/RC probably needs to do the same for future generations. There is a purple patch at the moment where lots of people are getting back into the hobby later in life thanks to having more time and disposable money. However, there will be an issue once that market ages and the younger generations don’t have the same desire for the product.
Tamiya needs some new licences to appeal to that younger generation at a price point to get them hooked but I would imagine they are not cheap to get nor easy to keep.
Until that time I am going to keep having a blast in my garden with my cars and promote the hobby best I can. My Daughter is 5 and loves getting out in the garden with the RCs. She has even asked to build one with me! 😄👍🏻

from other comments- not sure the TD2 needs hop ups? Slipper clutch maybe- not convinced it needs anything else for most people.

That it what I thought! I picked up a Kyosho Ultima rerelease for the same price as the TD2 here in the Uk. I am still interesting the the TD2 chassis though but might hold off until the early reviews are in. Just picking up the slipper and the universal drive shafts will put it well above the £300 mark!

So who else is getting excited about the TD2??? The recent videos from Tamiya have me considering a pre-order again. I just worry that it is going to need a load of those hop ups to make it perform well.

I stuck some oil filled shocks on my rere pumpkin and the rear brace and it handles far better than my stock Lunchbox.
I used the ones from JK-RC and they are awesome. You can see them in the build video below.

Glad I am not the only one!! I started back last year with my original retro cars. Convinced I needed a car to understand the build process in order to clean the old ones up and refurbish them…. I now have 12 new cars (3 still in their boxes to be built next year) and a plan for more! It is addictive but loads of fun.

Final build part! I made it to the end and there is some footage of both this build and my 1980 original.
Just want to get a proper running video now but it has been great fun building this Kyosho. Thanks for all the advice and support!-

Here we have part 4. Finished building up the rear of the car. Gearbox is finished and I have mounted the servo. Just need to get the wheels finished then we can run it round the track!

Catching up on things last night. Here is part 3 of the Raider Project. I have build everything up to mounting the motor.
Next video will complete the Chassis then hopefully I can get some footage of it running before the bad weather gets here! -
Getting these onto the Raider chassis has been a right pain! They are finally set correctly although I am not sure on the front hex nut as I think it is slightly too big and comes loose too easily.
Final tidy up of the cables this weekend and a quick mow of the track and we should be able to show the finished car!
I have really enjoyed this build and have already started wondering if the next one should be brushless…. 😁

Hi everyone!
Raider build has been progressing and I am hoping to post some updates this weekend. I have hit a huge stumbling block and waiting on some parts.
However, I am looking for some advice for Raider build number 2!! I need a pinion but cannot navigate through the various options out there.

Used some of the spare tubing this evening to protect the bug house and keep any cars out of the bottom flower bed near the grape vine. Next project for the track is clean up and some more dirt between the cherry tree and the kicker. I want to try and get as many stones out of the track and then whack the dirt down to compress as much as possible.
During rainy days I need to finish the tyre chicane although I am not sure where that is going now!

@Busdriver I am lucky we only have one dog and she is banned from the track area. First time up she started digging 😂!
The track is extremely tricky to drive fast. The pipe has helped with the confidence as there is less risk of hitting the trees now. I am also trying to protect the big house further up the track as there are bricks in there which will be rather unforgiving to novice drivers!
Thanks for the positive encouragement and I have plenty of ideas for next season! First job is to finish my chicane.

Had some friends round at the weekend and we got out on the track. My buddy has a 12yo lad who preferred the stick controller (like the PlayStation 😂) and we spent a good half an hour racing.
I ended up in a lunchbox hunting them down best I could but it was a great afternoon and exactly what I built the track for!-

Been a busy weekend but I found some time to finish painting these tyres and I managed to get some time up on the track fitting the land pipe.
I am pleased with how it has turned out. I need to finish some of the edges and I am going to fill the centre with wild flowers for next season.
Practice laps when well with the DT-03. I’ll post a video once finished editing!-
