  1. Also here the nice weather has come to an end. I need to do a few Jobs on the daily before MOT, so I'll use the little time in no rain I get to that. Otherwise it's plenty of other stuff to do: Paint the living rooms while raining and move trees and plante back to their home outside. I was away with one two trailer loads of trash on Tuesday (and done one on Monday), so now it's time ti build up a load with cut offs from the garden.

Tomorrow we are grilling with friends and on Saturday we are going to Sweden, just for the trip and to fill up the storage of meat and cheese again.

Have a great and pleasant easter everyone.

  2. @El Gecko. I'm curious on your results.

My 380ST in the Grasshornet feels more or less as a basic 540 silvercan when it comes to top end. A little less torqy, but hard to say since the Kyosho Scorpion tyres are so grippy.

The Ro Mans in the Tomahawk has impressive acceleration, but there I clearly see it's slower than it used to be. I never ran it on a Silvercan though. Only Yeah Racing Hackmoto 23t or 17t. But given the tiny 15t pinion it has now it's surprisingly fast. But we are not talking about wheelies here.

  3. I only go that style around marker 4 on this course. Otherwise the speed here is too slow to do otherwise than go smooth and in the ideal line. I try to be more like Kuba, who is a lot easier at the sliding and enters the corners less aggressive. In his latest vid you also see Pavel who won the rally. He also goes smooth and almost not slide at all. Also Dario is way less aggressive in the corners now with the new car than we remember from earlier.

The XV-01 has a too loose rear diff (1000) and the springs are too stiff. I run the pink stabilizers in both ends. It's lovely on slicks. For going in old people style it also is, but if you want to slide you need speed and you need to brake hard or drop the throtle abrupt while turning in. You cannot just floor it to slide around a marker. Then it would just spin the inner rear wheel. The dilemma is if I should go up to 9000 oil (in inventory) rear to have a setup more like Nicadraus, or just keep it as is and enjoy a well working postal racer. It's faster than the XV-02, but not by much. On slicks it's a different story (but that is not for this round).

The XV-02 has 8000 oil in the front and since I was lazy/it was late the kit 3000 in the rear. And has 400 oil front and 250 rear.  All inspired by Dario. Works nice on the semi clean tarmac on MST LTX. I also tried the worn out Ride slicks and it still slides around marker 4 in a predictable way.

The winter XV-01 has 8000 oil in the front and 5000 rear as in one of Dario's XV-01 vids. 400 oil front and 250 rear. No stabilizers. Ultra predictable on snow and gravel. Can be driven in an active way with full control, as long as stones keep out of the rear arms and drivecups. I have not tried it yet on this course. I will wait until the lapcount has stagnated for the other, to not mess up. It's hard enough going from the XV-02 after running it the whole week to the XV-01.

  4. I've been watching loads of vids from Dario lately (am gonna watch two more after posting this) and am heavily influenced. This round I am entering only rally cars and only on MST LTX tyres. I have been running the XV-02 extensively this week and has got a good flow. I am sliding around marker 4 and otherwise try to go in an ideal line as possible. I have improved 5 laps since the first stint. The last improvement came today, but now it's harder.

Today I tried the XV-01 for the first time. I have gone back to 6,1 FDR because of rally tyres and I don't need the speed on this course. Already on the first stint it made the same lapcount as the best of the XV-02. The XV-01 has more front bite and turns in a bit more aggressive, so it was a bit staccato on the first stint. I got used to it again and it improved further. I tested new MST LTX semi slicks on it to see if they can be ran without glueing. They cannot be. The right front went off already at marker 4 on the first lap.

Now that I know the lapcounts from last time I can say that the double of TurnipJF was impressive. It's quite a bit up there, I can say.

@Andreas W - the barn looks good, but you'll need a bit o' rustic charm to the outside walls. And a pipesmoking grandpa fisherman sitting on a bench outside, mending nets wouldn't go amiss either. :) Love the windows.

Hehe. Just turned 50, so that should count as a "Opa". No pipe smoking (or smoking for that matter), no nets either, but maybe syncronizing the Weber DCOE carbs on the Golf 1 16V with the Gunson tool will do as well B)

  6. Friday again. The week flies away.

Last weekend we got a site for our caravan,  so I rushed up in Telemark to take it out of winter storage. On Sunday we are parking it at the site. It's a lovely place on the 2nd row at the beach (so we don't have to be the windbreaker in the front). We are no stationary campers, so we wanted a site near the beach where we (relatively) easy can get the caravan in and out when we want to travel. The thought is to use it as a cottage or beach house instead of just having it parked in the driveway doing nothing.

I have been watching loads of vids from Dario lately,  so I am heavily influenced by the rally thing ATM. I'm enjoying the two XV-01 and the XV-02 on MST LTX. It's going quite well as long as I am stationary. When I am running behind the ground better have to be really even

The mini barn is also coming to shape and looks like something that has been there forever. I love it.

    Have a nice one,  guys.

No unicorn monster truck but how about the fastest (road) bee in the world?

How many scale points I score with that?

Hmmm. Then it must be a Super beeB)But looking more innocent and adorable than the Dodge with the same name (which I love, but never will get).

  8. I like this solution. It's relatively clean. This would have been a good opportunity to make taller alu towers to fit longer and proper shocks.

My brothers tower broke directly at the tub, so knoting what we now know he should have made a new out of alu. If he had asked our grandfather for help this would have been the solution. But he took what he had at hand and it was clearly successful.

    Really?  How so?

The chassis' look the same to me...

Hmmm. I think I must have been influenced by the specs sheet. But looking at the fotos of the models it looks like you are correct:).

The shock internals are the same on all Optima variations aside from the 87 WC Mid edition which gets titanium coated piston shafts.

The only other difference between models is in the bodies.  Anything above the regular Optima gets a screw collar for preload in place of a screw down plastic part.  Pro and 87 WC Mid get the same shocks as the Turbo but in gunmetal grey colour rather than gold.

There's also the more forward battery position on the Optima Pro ^_^

Edit: Now looking at fotos of the models the reres must be the same. It's only mentioned in the spec sheet for the Pro,  but in the physical world it seems not to be so.

  11. You cannot go wrong with a Kyosho. I was considering the different Optima versions back and forth since 2021 (and that was before the Mid was rere'd to make it even harder) before I finally pulled the trigger and got a 60th Anniversary Optima Mid (waiting to be built) last year. It has got more goodies than I wanted, but who doesn't like a well equipped version? It doesn't hurt that it has the (for me) prettier Optima Pro body as well.

Meanwhile we also got the Optima Pro, which for me is the prettiest bodystyle. It also has a more front oriented weight distribution with the battery more to the front than then other Optimas. It also comes with an undertray. It has been on a nice price here for what it is since Christmas (but honestly I cannot say I need one now).

Whichever version you get I would suggest getting an undertray (maybe also a spare body) from Penguin to keep as much muck put of the chassis and keep the chassis nice for longer.

PS: For less money and probably also a less interesting build, you also have the Dirtmaster,  Dirt Cross and Dune Master. All have solid drivetrains with the gearing options you want but with somewhat simpler materials. Here a Dirtmaster costs less than a DT04, so for carefree fun running I know which one of them I would pick.

I feel a bit silly for having just sold my XV-02 (at a huge loss, Pylon80-style 🤣) when I think it would have been better suited to my specific off-road conditions than the XV-01.

I had an XV-01 years ago in fact, but never ran it off-road and when I recently built a new one I just assumed it would be impervious to rocks and stones jamming the steering and belt, if only based on the unanimous praise from The Internet. It does great anywhere that doesn't have small stones so it's a shame.

Of course I could always design complicated fenders/wheel wells to try and prevent rocks from going in the bell cranks and front pulley, but that's taking me back to modifying regular touring cars and is a lot of fiddling I shouldn't have to do on a dedicated rally car.

Well, that's a shame. Everyone knows so well you need them both :D. For comparason, but also if the conditions turn out too hefty you can always switch to the XV-02.

I think the XV-01 can be made more stone proof without too drastic work. You can start with textile tape over the steering like chris.alex did and over the opening at the front belt pulley. Ihave loads of different types of foam,  so for next winter season I will try to come up with solutions for the stone problems. I don't want to run the XV-02 only when it's no frost in the ground. The winter XV-01 is too good to just get parked.

The one I read was last year's so certainly not the newest version. If it's not mentioned specifically in this years "book of rules" it should be fine.

Hehe. Brilliant. I knew I had read it sometime this year.

BTW: Your TD4,  aehm baby BBX really looks the business!

Are those Tamiya wheels? Last year only Tamiya wheels and tires were allowed in Tamico Off Road cup. The DT-04 is a good looking buggy IMO but some liveries make it sublime.

That looks like JC Racing Pepper Pots (which I of course love^_^). I just had a read through the reglement and only Tamiya tyres is mentioned. Nothing about wheels. But maybe the version I just read was not the newest version.
