Thank you for the response. I ensured that when I did a placeholder install, just holding it manually where the screws where, that the pinion placement was spot on. Thinking the "grinding noise" is due to an offset adjustment that I cannot see after screwing it in.
Do you have a link for an aftermarket / clear gearcase cover?

So I ordered these on a suggestion: CPE-MOT4 (teamcpe.com) -> There are no instructions on how to use them. Any ideas on installation?
I purchased RS-540 motors with the suggestions pinion size above -> 32p (32DP) with 13 teeth
I ensured the proper spacing on the pinon and when I soft fit it, the pinon lines up with the main gear in the gearbox, without needing the custom mounts (as I am not sure how to install them).
However, the sound the gearbox is making with the new 540 sounds like grinding. When I put the stock motor in, it sounds smoother.
Not sure what I am doing wrong.

I have an ESC in it already (or at least the previous owner did). They are the original motor which I believe are brushed, so I would like to keep it in that family.

Thanks! Do you have a suggestion on a set of upgraded motors as well?

Have an original clodbuster from 87, and would like to upgrade the motors from the stock ones to a 540. Any suggestions? Also what would be the pinon gear ratio that i would need? 18?

Thanks, yeah, I do not believe they knew what they had at the sale.
For what its worth, I did just look in the inside/underside of the body and it also says 1987 Clod Buster Made In Japan (see below)
The front grill and back bumper look different so maybe those were replaced at some point? Not sure what other badging I should be looking for. But everything on the chassis and the body are stating '87

Thanks guys. Well, after I posted this I went to look again and actually found a stamp on the right side battery tray, which has the following stamp -> confirming this is an original 1987 Clod Buster. I guess this working truck with a controller was a deal at 75 bucks.
I had no idea the chassis was stamped with the model and year.

Let me know what you think. Thanks for the help. I am thinking this is just a Clodbuster but want to be sure before I order anything. I am also pretty sure it is authentic / vintage and not the re-release.

Went to an estate sale this weekend and picked up a complete vintage clodbuster for very cheap. I want to perform some upgrades to it, like replacing the transmission bearings, etc. Before I do that however, I am not clear or can tell if this is a Super Clodbuster or just the Clodbuster. Is there a way that I can tell the difference?
I can upload whatever pictures may help as well.

Just purchased a Grasshopper kit which came with the classic "Tamiya Grease" to use. I went to my local hobby shop and they had some Traxxas grease, but were not sure if it was 1:1.
Anyone know what a 1:1 with the generic "Tamiya Grease" would be? There are no ingredients or other information (probably by design) from Tamiya on the packet.

Just purchased The Grasshopper Re-Release Kit. Went to my local hobby shop and they recommended a Traxxas Servo for it. In getting to the servo setup steps, there does not seem to be a Servo Saver for Traxxas.
Can anyone advise which saver to use here? I was thinking Futaba but was not sure.

Thanks, so I am taking it the "grinding" sound is the pinion not sitting correctly on the main gear? I validated the rotation of the new Tamiya 540 sport motors is in the same direction as the stock motors. guess I should wait for the clear covers to come into to make sure.
