  1. I was so happy to discover the GF-01 Kumamon Tractor, and quite sad to see that it was discontinued. Easily my favourite among them.

But hey, let's do a Monty Python - look at the bright side of life -  there is still the Dancing Rider, Wild Willy 2, the GF-01TR Monster Beetle, the old Lunch Box ... I mean, there is enough crazy Tamiya stuff yet to build, then get out the door and have a drive-around and a laugh.

Nostalgia is part of it, but I think for myself (and possibly others), presentation has a lot to do with it too. Tamiya packages were a special treat that no race kit consisting of ordered bags tossed in a box of parts could replicate, no matter how effective that final assembled product was.

It strikes me that the packaging of the Kyosho Dirtmaster is something else compared to the Legendary series - it was a surprise to me when people did the unboxing. Totally different feel.

These days, I am more aware of the packaging and the "whole experience" thing, although I still really dislike wrangling with wrapping paper and not-so sticky tape trying to make a nice package ... :) Need to turn to Furoshiki wrapping, I guess.

I might have to do something about this car : while NIB, some cracks appear in some area of the old polycarbonate... Clearly, it's not vacformed, it is folded after the cuts, so not sure how to deal with it...

I have no idea really, but is it possible to bend 2 mm lexan (without expensive machinery)? What I was thinking was more like using the model as a basis, doing the chassis out of (flat) carbon fibre and then mounting stuff on to that, and see if one could make something "in the spirit of".

Edit: just read your last post - cool! :)

  4. I guess I would heed @Saito2. I am slso stuck in the past - my first RC was a Monster Beetle. It has a hardbody (ABS, I think) which I like for the details and the look, but the Squash body is lexan which probably holds up better for crashes. This far, it seems that the Squash may be a better bet, but nobody really knows if any weaknesses will show up down the road.

Lately, I've been looking at the GF-01TR Monster Beetle Trail - but that's going in a slightly different direction than the Dump Truck that @Twinfan recommended. Probably got its own pecularities, but as I mentioned, I like the Beetle form.

  5. As far as I can see in the Showrooms section on the main site, the Lunchbox seems to have been done with M03 and M05 chassis.

Here is a video of an M05 in action:

... but I guess there are two main ways - either modifying the chassis or the body (as in the example above).

There is a bunch of photos (all text in german, though) over here: https://www.funktionsmodellbau.ch/content/series/dodge-van-auf-tamiya-basis/

The M07/M08 are very well priced compared the to MB01 and MF01X as you get proper plastics, bearing, oil diffs, oil shocks and hex HW. You don't get the flexibility that the MB01 offers but that isn't the end of the world.

Well, if you want a "shortie" FWD (that is, 210 mm) the M07 won't cut it (Only 225 and 239 mm build size). According to Tamiyabase, the M-08 could be done as a 210 mm - not sure if that really is correct, and if so, are the M07 and M08 that different from each other?

I'd love to say that was me, but I have no idea what you are talking about! Wrong post perhaps...:D

In the video you made (shown above), about 15 seconds in - probably because the video is edited -  a walking couple (in blue and red clothes) just "magically" appears in the extreme right of the frame, as if they were "beamed in" (a la Star Trek).

Never mind - I am just enjoying your work, that's all. :)

  8. Yes, sir - me too. Like @Twinfan I've tended towards keeping a cart in progress, changing it a million times, until I just get rid of it, or out of exhaustion press the button.

I am really on the lower end of the build project scale (single digits) but I am going to get rid of some stuff to gain some direction forward. Build what I can run (no shelf space and no money, really) and try to keep it for fun.

  9. @alvinlwh - all the stuff one had no idea existed - like a light blue that is actually grey. :D

Thank you for the explanation - I am going to continue rummaging around, lift a few stones and try and see what i can find ...

As for the 600, I meant 600 grit sandpaper and that the paint needs a roughened-up surface to adhere better. In the meantime, I did a test with the 600 paper - a step in the right direction.

  10. I got the paints the other day, did a quick test - and well, I'd better practice a lot more because that looked rather, uhm ... unsatisfactory. The brush-on primer (took the wrong colour, grey) probably needs a rougher surface. Is 600 grit too much for roughening?

And the "light blue" (XF-23) ... Hah. I may have an odd sense of colour, but blue? - not so much. Might have to see if there is an X (gloss) variant and mix that with white to get closer to what I need.

The upper bracket is made from epoxy fibreglass composite, which is the same material used for circuit boards (except for not having any copper).

    Thanks, that's a great help!

I didn't know that the Hornet lacks the motor plate - I thought it was sort of standard fare in most kits, but hey, learn something new every day. :)
