Love a good TL01 build. Making it do what it should not do is the fun part. Don't worry about a few things breaking after some some crashes, from what I was told, that's just the nature of touring cars. But one thing I did notice with having some weird crashes with mine, the TL01 is tough, and mine took flight a few times.
If you keep breaking bumper brackets, try the stock bumper and just cut some foam to fit on it and have it held in place with double sided tape like what I did.
Or another option would be to print a bumper using a more flexible material if you can.

We had a great evening of wet tarmac racing, until there was a pole in the path of my Peugeot.
Oof! Those poles are sneaky like that and will jump in front of you when you don't expect it.

On road I can run the Hotshot 2 pretty hard. Off road and on the track, I take it easy.
I've broken a few things on my Hotshot II. I really can't fault the car... Oh wait! Yes I can. The area where the hinge pins screw into the control arm is weak. Tamiya should have updated the control arms or at least made HD upgrade versions for the re release cars. Anyway, I have modified mine to take some more abuse with traxxas bandit control arms and redesigned the front skid and bumper.

Well... there was a lot of wear and tear. Almost every plastic ball connection was stretched or worn out and were beat up with scratches and deformed. Replacing the rod ends definitely reduced the amount of play in the steering. Here is a tip, use tape to mark the position of the old rod ends so you can have a guide for the new same size rod ends and not have to make many or any adjustments.
Some other things needed fixing. The screw holes for the lower cover were just so bad and cracked.
I checked my spare parts inventory and thankfully I had a new cover.
Now with thread lock and washers I think the new lower cover should be fine.
Replaced all the blue plastics with red plastics, put the hard body on and I think it looks pretty snazzy now.

As a lightweight 2wd buggy. Surely pretty much any servo should be strong enough. Just go with whichever is fastest. If they are all the same speed. Then it won’t really matter which one.
I'm more focused on durability and speed, if the buggy were to be a light runner, I'd use a standard servo.

It was always my understanding that Tower and Great Planes were 2 separate entities that merged under the Hobbico banner sometime in the mid 80's. Hobbico and later Horizon were often suppliers to smaller LHSs too. BITD mail order giants (Tower probably being one of the biggest) had the power to undercut small LHSs. At least that was complaints I remember around one particular LHS way back when.
Yes, I had it a bit mixed up. Hobbico owned Great planes and Tower which were just distributors. Pretty much the same people, but dealers/hobby stores ordered from Great Planes and Tower Hobbies was direct to consumer. So really all business from Tower or Great Planes was business with Hobbico.
When I worked at a hobby store in the past, we made our orders from the Great Planes dealer site, which was a bit clunky to use sometimes if you did not have item numbers. Hobbico just kept growing and eventually sometime after I quit the job at they declared bankruptcy and everything was sold to Horizon.

I suspect the new body part number is because the body will have different cut lines. The Evo has a big cut out at the year to fit around the DT-01 gearbox.
Hmm... yes. Looking at some of the images I see that now. Should be easy enough to fix on the regular Hornet body, so I'm fine with that.
-
Well... this is weird. Tamiya has a new part number for the body. I wonder what the differences are between the Evo and the regular body?
Anyway, I did some painting. Cut and trimmed everything first, then taped up the windows, then wiped the inside with a rag damped with alcohol.
I did about 8-9 coats of Gun Metal color to get full coverage, it was a bit cool outside so after each coat I dried the paint with a heat gun.
As you can see in the picture below the body is now Corsa Grey...
Lol, I'm just kidding, that's the back coat. Most lexan bodies I paint get a back coat to help make the paint less transparent in the light and give metallic colors their pop. I used Corsa Grey because I wanted a back coat that was darker than white and I had some cans leftover from years ago when I painted my M06 Beetle. I think it was a good idea, it was not too dark and not too light.
Then I could just not help myself, so I peeled the plastic off.
Yes the roll bar is the same color. No, I don't care, I like it like that.
Could you imagine those sweet new Hornet Evo flame decals on a body with this metallic color? It would look freaking sweet! I'm liking this Gun Metal color.
Anyway, back in the bag the body goes, now we wait.

always supported my LHS over Tower (the big bad guy to LHSs back then) as they always ordered what I needed or helped me out when I was a hapless kid
Tower Hobbies was the store for and owned by Hobbico which did business with the dealers through Great Planes. Hobbico also owned a lot of the RC and model companies and stocked the other guys as well. When many hobby stores order their stock they get it direct from Great Planes.

And the last time I visited one, in Wilsonville, Oregon, I asked if they had any RC models available as kits at all, and the woman behind the counter looked at me like I had three heads. Apparently "hobby" just means opening boxes and cutting zip-ties these days.
Not all Hobbytown locations are the same, they are a franchise. The one of the biggest RC related mistakes for Hobbytown owners was taking the advice from home office (Hobbytown's rep department). There are a few Hobbytown locations that put in the effort to sell kits and race cars, have a racing community and host races, but those are just a few. In my opinion, opening a Hobbytown location is pointless when the incentive does not seem that great and you have to pay a royalty.
There are a few Hobby Stores near me, the one I go to is 35 minutes away and has a race track, they have been in business since the late 80's.

after putting the rear axles back in I noticed that the rubber boots and the hex shafts keep slipping out on one side.
Put an O-ring or a spring in the drive cups to reduce the side to side float of the axle shafts but not bottom out in the cups, then zip tie the boots on
5 hours ago, Steel bearings said:Also, are the re release dog bone style shafts compatible with the vintage kit?
I'm not 100% sure, it has been years since I've worked on one, but I would assume maybe.
Also, welcome to TC.

Lunchbox front axles and some lunchbox wheels and tyres. 540 motor with lunchbox 10t long pinion. Reckon that would do it
Agreed, as simple as that with the lunchbox motor mount.
Edit:
And wheel hubs.

I'm on board! Please be thorough. I'm actually curious, and hope to be able to save up for one.
When I get it in early December I will document a lot more than what we have already seen so far 👍. This is going to be a little bit of a research project for me and hope to have fun with it.

to me it looks like PS-4 blue or PS-16 metallic would be a closest. i cant tell from the photo whether it is a metallic color or not though.
added some links to pics with the colors:
I believe it's metallic... I think.
So maybe PS-16 is the closest?

Yes, I know, some people are not really thrilled about the Hornet evo and it's looks and that better buggies can be had for cheaper. But I do this hobby because I can build what I want or like, sometimes for as little as possible too. I have done enough to now want something new again and it just so happens the Tamiya engineers have already done the work for me, so really that saves me time and money. When I first saw the hornet evo, I found it odd, but it soon gained my interest. So now with it on pre-order from the hobby shop I go to and having to wait till early December, I figured that it would be a good time to prep for it. I mean I have already been prepared for some time, but I've collected so much used and new over the years that now I have more to choose from.
For the steering a decent servo will be necessary, as this buggy will be ran harder than my usual hornets and hoppers. So I have decided not go with a plastic gear servo. So I've narrowed my choices between the Tower Pro and Rage metal gear high torque servos.(Probably the faster one.)
Not to brag, but I do have doubles and triples of some of the servos here, so I am not spending the money to buy another servo, I'll just use what I have.
For the receiver I have two choices, both are 2.4Ghz S-FHSS and will work with my Futaba 2PL an 3PL. I use to just swap receivers from model to model, but that gets annoying when the collection grows.
Sticking with 2.4Ghz because it's 2024 and getting interference should be a thing of the past, although I am tempted to use some of my old 75Mhz radios, lol.
The last piece I need is a painted body, because it's cold in December, which means no spray painting for me. I had bought a spare body for my hornet in the past, so now it will be painted for the new car.
I'll try and paint the body this weekend, it will not be black, but I think gunmetal will look pretty sweet.
It's weird, this kind of seems backwards, but I guess that's a good thing.

I love the CC01 (I probably have more of them than any other chassis) but it's so flawed out of the box, it's surprising Tamiya have been able to sell it for so long. It will be a terrible shame when it's gone for good, but I'd really love to see a new version with better steering and a rear axle that doesn't need to be shimmed.
A bit true. They could have made some small changes for modern times, like a CC01.5, but did not. Really, Tamiya could have just added a plastic shim in the kit for the rear ring gear and that would only add a few cents to cost probably. The chassis only accepts oval pack batteries, maybe update the chassis mold so hard case LiPo's can be used. One big of the biggest issues that stand out is the kit included tires, Tamiya really needs to get with the times on that one, because those tires just awful compared to what you get from the other guys.
I do love the CC01, lol I bought two. I know it's limitations and it's potential. Let's just say my CC01 Bronco has surprised an Axial SCX10 owner or a few. 😁

Thanks for the good advice. I'm going to adjust the 55T spur gear as I've got that lying around anyway. And then maybe I'll sign up for a beginners race next year. 🙂
Just keep in mind that it's not a direct bolt in mod, but trimming the gear by the hub is very easy. It's totally worth it if you already have it and have a powerful enough motor to take advantage of the higher speed gearing.

I need to come back to the topic, because I wonder how to set the gear ratio of my TT02SR or XM01 Pro to 4.5:1 or 5.0:1 if I ever wanted to join a racing event? Even with the 64t spur gear of the TT02 it's not going under 5.74:1.
Does it mean that the popular TT02 can't participate in most of the racing events?
There are some tricks you can do. Some people buy the the high speed gear set and run 48p gears(someone on the forum mentioned it) or do what I did and make the TT01 spur gears work, which is very easy.
