If my brushed motor is making a “squealing “ noise is the solution to just clean it or is the problem more serious? Thanks in advance!
-
My Wild One was in pretty much mint condition, having all the vintage electronic equipment and almost no rere parts (apart from some clips) but I have started ruining it recently due to accidents, poor decisions and mistakes. More and more scuffs and scratches have started to appear on parts and all 4 rims have been replaced with aluminium ones, since I was originally intending to run it frequently. However, I’m currently lost. As I would like to sell it later on I’m not sure what to do with it. Should I buy some more hop ups (such as bearings) and keep running it every now and then, or try not to upset purists when selling it later on?

Frog gearbox problem - lubrication?
Steel bearings replied to Steel bearings's topic in Re-Release Discussions
Thanks! -
I have just finished assembling my Frog, and I’ve noticed that the gearbox seems to produce a loud whine when ran at speed. It’s a lot louder than any other tamiya kit that I have and seeing that it’s my first build (but not my first Tamiya rc product , before you get confused.) I suspect it’s me who has made a mistake. I also suspect that I might have put too little lube (I think I only put lube on the metal gears.) What could the problem be, and what should I not do? Thanks in advance!

The boomerang was prone to cracks in its rear arms, front arms and maybe even gearbox I think. It’s a good idea checking them for any cracks or even straight up buy replacements even if they aren’t cracked, as they probably will crack after a bit of running. If you plan to run it regularly it would be wise upgrading to aluminum arms. They usually crack around the screws. Check the front knuckles as well, not sure if they crack as easily but I have a bigwig, (Which shares a lot of parts with the boomerang.) and my front knuckles need replacing. Shouldn't be that hard to replace those parts as they have been used on many kits and have been re released.

Well… I haven’t got any hobby stores close by at all. There used to be around 5 close to me, but they all closed down some time ago. I can’t say if it’s like this in the rest of Europe but here in Sweden there’s been a dwindle in rc overall I think. It’s probably not as fashionable as video games or other electronic equipment anymore. I think most rc companies realized that they can get a wider range of customers to buy their products by selling them online rather than in a hobby store. Kind of like shopping malls close down because websites offer cheaper products or/and are more efficient for the companies that own them. I don’t like it either, because I have to wait for weeks for some simple parts to arrive that I could have bought from say, a hobby store near me. But at the end of the day, companies always want to earn more money and they take such routes to do so. Although when you mention it, I’m actually not quite sure why other hobbies like trains or Warhammer still have shops open. I guess they might close down soon as well. Or perhaps it’s in fashion again?

Bigwig restoration - any ideas?

I’ll definitely look into it! Yeah I’ll definitely replace some of the cracked pieces later on, like the cracked gearbox casing but Ive ordered replacements for some more urgent components like the wheel hubs for example. And by the way, how fast do you think the pinion gear will wear out? Thanks!- 6 replies

Bigwig restoration - any ideas?
Steel bearings replied to Steel bearings's topic in Vintage Tamiya Discussion
Yeah, they really only bothered to mask the tires Aha, I think the reproduction body is quite common on eBay. I’ll probably try to strip it down as you said and I’ll definitely reuse the roll cage pieces. I was actually wondering if the hotshot wheels would fit the other day Information regarding stripping the paint is really hard to find (At least I couldn’t find any.) so that’s a big help for me. Thanks!- 6 replies

Steel bearings started following Bigwig restoration - any ideas?
-
A few weeks ago a decided to have a go at reviving a vintage bigwig that had been sitting around in storage for 35 years. It wasn’t in great condition, because it had stopped working a long time ago and the previous owner had spray painted the entire body and pretty much everything else silver.. And then proceeded to drill 4 holes in the chassis for two sets of wires. (Motor wires and battery connections.) Anyways, I started by stripping out the old mechanical speed controller and receiver (the transmitter was lost, perhaps thrown away unconsciously.) Since then I’ve put a Hobbywing 1060 in it along with a Dumbo RC x6pm-350. (Not the most professional setup but it works just fine, and I was on a budget.) Everything works mechanically now, apart from a few cracked components that I’ve ordered replacements for but I’ve hit a wall in terms of appearance. What should I do with the silver paint? And what sort of hop ups should I buy/not buy for it? Thanks in advance! Note 3 visible holes sticking out and crudely applied paint. It’s not that obvious here, but the paint job extends to everything from the arms and gearbox casings to the bathtub chassis and wheel knuckles.

Firstly, this is my first post. ( I’m not really that new to the hobby though.) I am currently working on my vintage wild one ( servicing, putting bearings in etc.) and after putting the rear axles back in I noticed that the rubber boots and the hex shafts keep slipping out on one side. I’ve read that it’s a common problem with this kit and a few others sharing similar/the same components but I cannot find any info regarding fixing it. Also, are the re release dog bone style shafts compatible with the vintage kit? Has anyone got any ideas/tips for solving the issue?
