  1. Another other tip I recently picked up...whichever color you spray first, after you have masked, respray a thin coat of that same color around the edges of the masking tape. The story goes that this helps seal the masking tape edge, and if you DO get bleed through, it is the same color as the color under the tape. This particular magazine article was referring to airbrushing, so I don't know how effective it would be with rattle cans, but it sounded like a reasonible idea to me...
  2. Here's my take: The other day I saw in a car mag that Jaguar is going to make a limited run of vintage rarities like the C-Type and D-Type with modern mechanicals and try to sell them in the $250-350k market. Now, I'm not exactly in the market for a $300,000 car, but if I had the money would be all over one of these even though they are not "real" in the sence that they are not a $1,000,000 paperweight (with peaky, tempermental engines and transmissions you have to shift in slow motion) which any sane person would lock away in a heat and humidity controlled garage. To me, an "Imperfect" re-re that actually runs and drives and doesn't make you pee your pants just be cause a bee got splattered on the windshield has a certain ammount of value in and of itslef. I have also heard that Tamiya is planning to make a run of vintage rarities like the Rough Rider and the Sand Scorcher with updated mechanicals and try to sell it in the $250-350 market. I AM in the market for an interesting $300 R/C car, and when the SS (or what ever they rename it) comes out I will be all over one of these even though they are not "real" in the sense that they are not a $2000+ NIB paperweight (with 30 year-old parts which are often brittle and difficult to replace) which any sane person would lock away in a heat and humidity controlled display case. Again, to me, an "Imperfect" re-re that actually runs and drives and doesn't make you pee your pants just be cause a bee got splattered on the windshield has a certain ammount of value in and of itself. But that's just me...
  3. As a loyal son od SoCal I gotta chime in... A: the first R/C I ever saw running was primer gray SS (I was 9 or 10) and was hooked from the get go... B: the "Baja" bug was really an "Anza Borrego/Glamis" bug first, so there were a ton of them around here in San Diego the 1970's and thus the SS has a strong association with my youth... C: since the 1:1 version was so much more afordable than a 934RSR or the race buggy the RR was based on you have a built-in fan base... D: I still see at least one 1:1 Baja Bug every two or three weeks on the road (not counting the parking lot of the 2 VW specailists within 1 mile of my flat), so given the popularity of the 1:1 it is only natural that it would still be popular (compare that to the Mini I saw at the grocery store a couple days ago...the first in 3 years or so even though there is an English car specialist right accross the street from where I work? ) E: IT JUST LOOKS RIGHT! lol. Who can really explain why some things become icons and others don't? Is Pepsi any lower quality than Coke-a-cola? Any less as old (pretty close anyway)? Why is it we say Band-aid or Kleenex or Xerox or Coke instead or the more correct "Self adhesive Bandage". "Facial Tissue", "Photocopy" or "Soft drink"...some items/images/products just be come iconic, and much like the Baja bug it self became the quintisensial "Dune Buggy", so too the SS naturally fell into icon status as an icon of our youth. Just my sixpence, -M
  4. Sombody please confirm this so i can start breathing again (CLEAR! PZZZZAAT!) charge them paddles again!
  5. I was doing a random search on TamiyaUSA for the new Z4 Coupe livery coming out, and chanced upon this: http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/item.php?product-id=DT587 never seen this before. but being asucker for BMW lids...gotta have one, lol. The DT part number is wierd, but being 1/12 is this an alternate lid for the GT01 or something?
  6. Well, my vision is fine, but how did it know I had a fat belly????
  7. How about front uprights for the TA01? In addition to all the TA01/02 variants you get coverage of the Hotshot/Boomerang/Terra Scorcher line too (hint: I want some for my Hotshot, lol). Also, with the recent Re-Re of the SRB chassis, how about a detail set of the back 1/3 of the V-dub engine? You can pick up a 1/16th Kubel for about $75 and scale it up a little bit... that kit has a very detailed (larger) scale Type 1 engine, and since most of it was covered in fan shroud anyway, it should be fairly simple. How about some nice dual Webbers and an external oil cooler?
  8. Ok Jack, I'll bite...where did you get the stunning Mylar/chrome parts sprues? Did you send those out yourself to be coated?
  9. The knuckles on the main sprues are the original ones and the re-re comes with 50648 which seems to be a generic replacement for the TA01/02 (+03?) and a bunch of the re-re's. I broke one my first run, and had to go back to the originals, but am waiting on my TA04 CRP pieces I just ordered. I dunno what that is gunna do to the steering geometry, but heck the heck, they are cheap, lol.
  10. The carbon tubes are easy enough at your LHS as they are used as internal wing bracing in r/c planes. I'm working on a carbon tube front end ala' the 1:1 Warrior 8" wider front end but there are two minor hiccups: First the tubes are not of a uniform wall thickness like a metal tube, the axis of the inner diameter and the axis of the outer diameter are not the same, so the inside of the tube is off center. Second, the tube thickness is not the same as the Tamiya tubes, so what I did was to cut the inner ends off all four axles and trimmed the inner tube exactly the length of the outer tube minus the width of the outer 'bearing' surface of the axle. My idea is that now the whole inner surface of the axle is now a bearing inside the inner carbon tube, thus taking a little of the wobble out of the front end. It looks like it will work eventually, but I am waiting for the re-re parts to get easy as after doing all this it highlights just how bent my old axles really are!
  11. Ok, so today was payday and while waiting for my postman to deliver some more precious Tamiya bits, I decided to do a little shopping for a cheap indoor basher to chase my cat around the house. After hitting up Toy'r'us (and almost buying a 2" Hornet! Who knew?) and Wal-Mart to no avail I moseyed over to Radio Shack and they sell these cool little robot thingies for $10! It looks like a 3" cockroach wheels for feet that is touch sensitive...the cat slaps it and it changes direction. When it gets stuck, he picks it up like a dead mouse, carries it away, where dropping it turns it back on and it runs away again! You can likely get them anywhere, I tell ya what, this thing is hilarious! Best $10 I've spent in a long while, and Chester (the cat) agrees! http://www.hexbug.com/ant
  12. I was very happy with the CF chassis kit I bought for my TT01 and have been tempted to pick up one of their new mini chassis' based on the TT01 since I already have the donor car...any word on it yet? ABC's Lancia Stratos body is calling to me...
  13. Also keep in mind that this seems to be advertised as a 1973 Carerra model, which had a different tail than the 1976 RSR Tamiya based their car on. The wing looks pretty good to me based on that, but I'm no expert on Porsche's. Let's hope a BMW 2002 is in the future for their new mini chassis?
  14. Well, given my choice I'm going to left field here...Sherman Tank. It's been in production since 1974 in one form or another it outclasses all for longevity, definitely needs a barrel recoil made to fit the tiny turret, an early style VVSS suspension (as opposed to the HVSS in the kit) would open up s zillion more opportunities to model more then the 3 or 4 variants able to be done now, and it'd be really fun to see one of these expensive kits abused in a way I'm afraid to do myself. If I have to vote within the real world, I'd have to go HotShot, just out of pure selfishness, because I want a tighter diff than grease can give me, and I would like to see a drive shaft available with a center one-way, some FRP suspension arms and gear boxes, and so on and so forth.
  15. Went to the L.A. Roadster Show with my dad and uncle for Father's day. Not really R/C related, but just wanted to remind ya'll to rember dad (who prolly helped you with your first R/C! lol) and if you are in So Cal and have not been to this show you're are are missig out! Always great, WELL worth the price of admission...sadly I forgot my camera this year...sob sob.
