  1. Hi you knowledgeable lot. I’m just starting to restore my vintage Hornet, Clod Buster and Subaru Impreza. A lot seems to have changed in the last 25 years since I last did anything with them. The electrics all seem a little shot, and it would seem the thing to have is a ESC. Please could you let me know which one would work on each model, I can’t figure it out. I’m going to run Tamiya brushed motors in all of them (I think). Want to try and keep the cost down as much as possible. please speak in simply terms for a simple person. Many thanks.

  3. Who has experience with mounting led lights on a Tamiya Hornet? Any tips or tricks, especially on mounting lights at the rear of a Hornet. Regards Walter
  4. Hello. I have rebuild my tamiya hornet and i have ran it two times so far. I have a hobbywing 1060 esc and its ball raced and has a black sports tuned motor. The issue is that it seems there is a power loss and a weird noise, like a zzzzzzzz on the air it sounds okay and it spins great. On the road, i punch forward and seems the noise is faster than the move, like its slipping. I thought it was the rear wheel adaptors but those were okay. I also took apart the gearbox and all gears, diff and all pins and stuff were okay and present. Now cause i bought it second hand and it was my first time building it, i didnt have the tamiya grease, so i used the Hudy graphite grease. I didnt follow the manual, but instead i put a generous amount of the grease in all gears etc, until they all became black Would this be the issue? and if yes, can i clean and reuse the parts? gears, counter gear, diff etc? can i wash them with water and let them dry? how do i clean them? and should i use again that graphite grease or should i get a tamiya grease? if i cant find one, what other grease can i use? thank you all
  5. Wanted: Aftermarket front oil shocks for the tamiya hornet to be installed in the same way like the stocks. Basically i need you-g, parma etc these kind of shocks. Used or new. Thanks

  7. I'd love some recommendations for set of street tires that will fit the vintage Hornet/grasshopper/etc. I've heard the Brat tires could work but the wheels don't look like they will fit the axles. I bought a set of 1.6 slicks but they inside diameter is too big and do not grip the wheel at all. Suggestions?
  8. After rebuilding my original 84 Hornet I've decided to tackle a second new Hornet build applying all that I learned from the first build. I'm sure I'll still make some mistakes and learn more throughout this build. Your suggestions are welcomed and needed!
  9. So my new Hornet is together and read for a run. However, the transmission foes not sound right. Something has to be rubbing. After inspecting it looks like to me that the "small bevel gears" are sliding up and down the their shafts and hitting the inside of the "differential spur gear". Everything test well but when you slap the motor on the transmission is definitely making a sound it shouldn't it does not have that characteristic Tamiya Hornet sound . I ordered all from eBay, is it possible I have the wrong gears? They look the same as my other hornet. Not it sure what's going on. Anyone experience to much play with the spur diff and bevel gears? Ek
  10. HI all, this is my first post, so go easy I bought my 6 year old son a grasshopper for his birthday. I loved it so much I bought a Hornet. I've modded it out a tad: Front arms are from a rising fighter. Slightly notched to fit 3D printed battery door & transmission retainer by AMpro from Shapeways. Jun ltd edition wheels Sports tuned motor Red decals added to make red on original decals pop. I'm not sure about the shocks. I wanted to get the same colour paint, so I will probably change those. Thanks for looking, Paul
  11. Finally found one thanks to OCD on here. Also, thanks to all who helped me and for the friendly replies!! This pic ain't the best but I finally, finally own one 😎

  13. Hey guys - I have a bunch of projects on the verge of completion and not enough spots on my shelfer / runner shelves to fit them so I've listed a bunch currently on the bay. The Varicom Panda is a fun runner but I have more runners than places for them. The re-re Hornet and Grasshopper are theoretically runners, but the GH has only been run a few times and the Hornet has never been run at all! The Traxxas Cat is the last of my early Traxxas buggies. I like them and have enjoyed owning the little pieces of history that they are, but have had to whittle down my fleet to just Tamiya, Kyosho and one RC10. I just don't have excess room and there are Tamiyas and Kyoshos that are must-haves for me still finding their way to my shelves. The Clod body actually came off of a Clod I got in a trade from TCer @markbt73 but I want it box art red and couldn't bring myself to ruin the nice vintage decals just to change the color. As for the Bandido and Pegasus stuff these are project cars I picked up for restorations that ended up being excess to my needs (new Bandido, Pegasus, etc showroom entries forthcoming sometime soon-ish). All the auctions are no reserve - if I wasn't the one selling them to make space, I'd be bidding on them for sure: http://www.ebay.com/sch/waynethebrain/m.html

  15. We all know that Tamiya tested out variations of paint schemes and decals for different bodies prior to finalizing them. There are examples in posters, guide books, etc. There's one in particular that I'm really curious about and wish I knew the full story of... so I thought I'd put it out to our resident Tamiya historians and brain-trust here in the forum to see if anyone knows anything or can dig up the story behind what I call the "Hornet II". My theory is that before settling on the (in my opinion) hideous decal scheme found on the final version of the Super Hornet Tamiya designers were toying with the idea of it being a Hornet II instead, akin to the Grasshopper II (albeit, that also doesn't much resemble the GH1 design), which would maintain some of the aesthetic features of the original Hornet in terms of coloring and decals, but otherwise be the same buggy as the Super Hornet. The thing that originally got me wondering about this is that tamiyausa.com has a peculiar image that comes up when you search for the Super Hornet: http://www.tamiyausa.com/items/radio-control-kits-30/off-road-buggies-36450/rc-super-hornet-58124 This is from a Tamiya website! When I first saw this I immediately loved it. So much better than this: I got rid of my box art Super Hornet and made up a shelfer version, and now also a runner, resembling the top pic - which to me evokes a Hotshot II aesthetic as well, to add to the Hornet II mystery! http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=127856&id=39840 http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=118746 SO... thoughts??!
  16. Hi everyone, quick question... I have a brand new striker gear bag but its missing the differential spur gear (the part that the 3 small bevel gears go into) Apart from the sonic fighter and falcon, is there any models which share the exact same part? There are plenty of hornet, wild willy and lunchbox gear bags about, could I used just this part from these sets????? Thanks!
  17. For a while it has been nagging at me every time I walk into the garage and see my shelves of vintage shelfers the fact that two of them aren't completely vintage originals. Specifically the Hornet and Frog. The Frog is all original, but has a re-re body + decals. But the Hornet I built before I developed my collection enough to really divide between runners and shelfers and it's mostly re-re including the body - it even has a 2.4ghz Rx and an ESC fitted. Which means it's basically a runner, and that's where it lives now. I'll build a re-re Frog to use the current "shelfer" Frog shell and locate an original Frog body set at some point when I find the right deal to jump on. Well, on the Hornet front the "right deal to jump on" popped up a couple weeks ago on eBay as a partially built vintage original Hornet kit, which had only been barely started being built and was complete - in other words perfect for a vintage build, without having to sacrifice an intact NIB kit or pay the premium for one. What I didn't realize at the time is that this particular Hornet kit was an Mk1! I didn't really even think about it until reading through Hibernaculum's excellent resource on telling the differences between the different vintage makes and the differences with the re-re. But I was curious so I had a look and lo and behold I got my hands on a complete Mk1 Hornet kit that I intended to build anyway for $100 + 14.50 postage. And... as a bonus it came with a brand new in box hump battery, which alone was worth the majority of the price paid for the lot and didn't need so I sold it and was snatched up quickly for a good price ($55) by our own Yonez, PLUS the Hornet came with a 1980 Tamiya Guide Book! In other words, the Mk1 Hornet kit was essentially free. Not a bad deal! My guess is that when whoever was building it many years ago got to the part with the bare wires on the motor they closed it up and that was it. Here is a pic from the listing... and below it are my pics of the kit, battery and guidebook. Here are my pics noting the Mk1 tells, as described by Hibernaculum's website: It's interesting that the body shell and wing have nothing at all embossed in the plastic. The lexan also feels especially thick/strong to me... Here's the bonus NIB hump pack battery: and last but not least the 1980 Tamiya Guidebook!

  19. Hey folks! I think this is the right place to ask this. I recently purchased a nice collection of vintage Tamiya models. Part of the goal was to sell some to get my money back and of course keep some. Only problem is I want to keep a lot of them! ha ;-) Anyways I have a hornet, frog, and grasshopper all NIB still sealed in the cellophane. I researched ebay a bit and even tossed up some to test the market, but my question is what do you think these are worth? It is hard to tell because you do see a handful of NIB's that are sold, but nothing that is sealed like this. Part of me wants to just hold onto them, part of me wants to build them lol. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  20. WANTED: Tamiya Hornet C-Parts and D-Parts... More specifically, I'm after the battery cover from the C-Parts and the body-mounts (body posts) from the D-Parts. Having spent a butt load of money restoring this Hornet, my budget is somewhat tight at the moment. While I'd like to have BOTH sets complete, I really need those two listed items. If someone does have both Parts for a decent price (possibly between £10-£15) then I'll take them. otherwise, if someone has JUST the batter cover (in good condition, no scratches) and the body posts, I'll take them instead. PM me if you have them. Many thanks
  21. ** If you wish to see the photos in one place, here is a link to the album on Imgur - http://imgur.com/a/fNZKP ** Originally, I wasn't going to post this restoration/refurb on here, but I eventually decided otherwise. Basically, I purchased a 1980s (1987 I think) Hornet from a seller on eBay, as a partial restoration project the guy never finished. I've been on the hunt for a Hornet restoration project for some time, and this one was just right, The seller had already replaced the chassis, gearbox, wheels, tyres and servos with new ones. This was a shame in a way, as it meant I had less work to do, but on the flip side, it probably helped my wallet as well. He also included a brand new, un-painted body. The current body, which I've recently removed all the stickers, wasn't in a bad condition. Just a few cracks here and there, and a lot of paint chipping off. Once the Hornet has been restored, I'll have a go at saving the old body, if I can. Anyway, the car needed an speed controller to replace the mechanical one, a new receiver and a motor. Thankfully, I have a spare 17x2 motor I can use, and have recently purchased a new speed controller and receiver, which should be here soon. I've also purchased the paint for the body. Above photos show the chassis and the original bodyshell. Hopefully I can save that shell with a nice coat of paint on the inside and the outside. The spoiler couldn't be saved, but I have an idea how to obtain a new one. As mentioned, the old mechanical speed controller will get replaced with a new one. Once the new items arrive (hopefully by Monday) I'll upload some new photos, before starting the re-build and painting the new shell. And these one show the new shell, ready for painting. I wanted to paint it Metallic Red, but the site I usually get my paints from had none in stock. I tried to get all the parts in one place, but that failed. So I opted for a different colour. You'll see once I upload the photo. I'm sure this restoration.... I use the term loosely... won't be all that exciting, as most of the work was already done. So it'll most likely be a short one. Anyway... feel free to follow the build... or don't, I won't blame you
  22. Well I am getting sick of destroying my spiked tyres so after some rear wheels for my hornet with the hopper / scorcher paddle tyres fitted. Ideally looking for the set as I want to be able to swap and change. Anyone got any they fancy letting go for a few beer tokens?
  23. Hi !! I'm looking to the part attached wich is a front shocks tower for finish my project on my gh, any ideas where i can find it ?? Or someone can built it ?? Thanks in advance !!
  24. Hey guys, new to the forum but thought I'd post up my progress with my first rebuild. I chose the Hornet as it was my first ever R/C back as a kid. Unfortunately he died when I crashed it into a lamp post! I was lucky enough to find one on eBay so got cracking into restoring it to it's full glory. Details of where I am upto are on my Blog. http://rcrestoration.blogspot.co.uk/ Even though this once isn't completed I have managed to win another auction for my 2nd car as a kid - The Lunchbox! I'll be starting that next along with A Grasshopper which I won alongside the Lunchbox. So plenty to keep me busy!
