  4. 1987 was a landmark year for Cats. While Schumacher's Cat XLS was winning the IFMAR 4WD OR title, Traxxas was launching the first hobby grade RTR in the form of the Tom Cat, or just simply the Cat. It is a car heavily influenced by Tamiya - a Grasshopper style chassis & trailing transmission, a body shell reminiscent of the Fox and Yellow CVA style dampers, albeit with a unique way of adjusting spring rates. Inspired by an article on URC, I plan to restore and gently modify this car to race at next years Iconic Revival - 30 years after the Cat was released. This is what I purchased on eBay recently vs. what I would like to create...

  6. I love the three speeds, but the Blazer is special for me - no idea why. A bit like the Scorcher I guess, it's just a classic look. This has been on my to-do list for ages and I bought the project from TC member Kokuzu. Original pics:- On of the things I really liked about this one was that it came with a hand made alloy roof (I believe it's a J-Man work of art):- This makes it a bit special Unfortunately, it was packed terribly (wrapped in one piece of newspaper and then chucked into a box) so suffered not inconsiderable damage in transit from Germany to the UK. Radio box was smashed, front body mount bent beyond repair and a few other things. Annoying, but not a crisis as I have an immaculate condition radio box and picked up a body mount on eBay. If you look at the body pic above you'll also see that someone at some point has cut a slot in the bonnet - no idea why. Anyway, that's first repair. I have a few extra goodies too - like a NIB set of tires (I have 2 of these, so got all 4):- ... amongst other goodies :). More info to follow as I go....
  7. Selling a nicely painted bodyset. Undamaged and with front lights. 269 EUR shipping to Europe and Paypal fees included. (Insured and tracked) Shipping worldwide at cost.

  9. Finally found one thanks to OCD on here. Also, thanks to all who helped me and for the friendly replies!! This pic ain't the best but I finally, finally own one 😎
  10. Few things illustrate the passing of time quite like an unfinished R/C project. In fact, sometimes they terrify me. I seem to have so many "projects", or things I "plan to do", that occasionally I'll open a box and find a car in it, and recall that I'd intended to do something with that car literally years ago, and forgot about it... "Can it really be 3 years since I last worked on this car? Wasn't it just a few months ago that I painted the driver? What else have I been doing in that time...?" The answer to that last question is of course, lots: research, hunting for things online, writing, emailing, fixing other cars, buying, selling. And of course, composing new time-wasting threads on Tamiyaclub to talk about the time I've been wasting. But still, there are some projects that sit idle for years and years....and years. Waiting for the motivation, the spare parts, or just the right rainy weekend with no other responsibilities... How many R/C projects do you have that have been untouched for years? And will you be alive long enough to finish them? To end on a positive note, I'd also hate to run out of things to do. So maybe life is really about never finishing?
  11. ...you can't bring yourself to let any of them go? For example. I think I probably have 30 boxed sets of Super Champ, Sand Scorcher and Rough Rider tyres in total (accumulated over 25 years). Perhaps it's ~$1000 worth, just in tyres. But I love the boxes so much, I could never bring myself to sell any. (More likely I'll end up with a few more in the years ahead). Ah, the allure of vintage. Especially if it's some car or part you pined for as kid... Anyone else accumulated several of the same thing (more than they need), yet have precisely zero plans to sell any of them? After all, if it's some item you love, and you paid for them all, you can fill a swimming pool with them as far as I am concerned - I totally get it H.
  12. Hey gang! Well, I decided to try something fun today live on the internet with our love and past time hobby Tamiya. A website called Twitch.tv allows people to stream creative hobbies to anyone who wants to watch. I usually play video games on Twitch but decided to try my creative thumb and stream some live vintage Tamiya restoration, painting, repairing and anything else that I have on the backlog just waiting to be finished. I have never seen anyone cover anything Tamiya on Twitch, so I figured why not be the first! Would love to have ya stop by and say hello! My handle is AmericanPixel on Twitch and you can view my channel here: twitch.tv/AmericanPixel I go live every day at 4pm (PST). If you pop in, be sure to shoot me a follow and say hi in chat and tell me you came from the forum! It's 100% free and you don't even have to register to watch!
  13. Hi, My CRP Superbuggy is looking for a new playmate! She can be found on Ebay.com, titled: "CRP Superbuggy - modified Tamiya Super Champ SRB 1/10 - vintage" Auction ends on Tuesday, June 14. A bit stressy timeframe, sorry about that. Hope you'll catch her.
  14. Since becoming serious (as much as a non-humorless person can be said to be) about collecting Tamiya, rediscovering it after the beginning of the re-release era, it turned out I wasted a lot of time, effort and resources on quite a few projects and purchases that I thought were vintage but weren't... or that were but I thought nothing of replacing parts with new re-issued parts thinking they were identical. Often the differences / tells were staring me right in the face but I didn't know what to look for. Even now, and even among experienced members and collectors I find there are pockets of knowledge many have on this subject with respect to a few models they've become sort of 'specialists' in, and simultaneously quite a bit of uncertainty or total unfamiliarity for others. Although there are some resources that do a great job of introducing and explaining the situation, such as this excellent post from the TCer @Hibernaculum on his own blog, there is no one place I could find that could be considered a good central reference for someone trying to find out how to tell if something is original / genuine / vintage or not. By no means do I know enough on my own to fill this need, so I invite you all who know anything from one little tip to an encyclopedic knowledge of every variant of a model Tamiya ever released. We may as well also include Kyosho, Associated, etc to the extent relevant. The format that I think would be easiest and most useful for expanding on the existing compiled notes on a given model is to keep each post related to one model per, then anyone who'd like to add details or make corrections just quote or copy/paste the full contents of the most recently updated information about that one model, add their piece or modify what was there if/as needed... and then do the same separately for any other model(s). I don't have time right this second to do a complete coverage of the Frog, which I'll start off with since it was a couple mislabeled-as-vintage Frog items that made me think we needed a place to store and reference information like this. I also think it's important that people know they can add just fragments of useful information and don't feel like they need to post perfectly-formed analyses covering everything about a model. It's fine to do that, but not necessary, and I think we'll amass more useful information by keeping the bar low. If you have $20 of info to contribute, great... but also great if you only have $0.20 to add right now. So, I will start us off with a few Frog things in the next post. ps - I want to point out that for the most part, parts or models that are described as vintage or original that aren't one or both usually aren't the result of intentional misinformation. It's probably just a lack of knowledge combined with an under-appreciation of the significance of the difference that results in the proliferation of these kinds of mistakes. But it certainly doesn't help people who do care but are still learning develop an accurate knowledge. Hopefully, this thread can help.

  17. Thanks for approving mods! Hello everyone, Having been following the listings of vintage Hilux 4x4 3 speeds and parts on ebay for about 2 years, after really getting to appreciate these metal three speeds following the build up of my Brusier Rere, I finally decided to venture into the vintage game and purchase a 35 year old RC. It's incredible how well designed and special these 3 speeds feel particularly for the era in which they were built, which happens to be my favourite decade anyway...the Magnificent 80's!! After seeing a spate of these get snapped up on ebay and prices seemingly creeping north, I finally decided to buy this on ebay last week, very soon after it was listed. It was listed on Italian ebay and I stumbled on it by chance in the stupid early hours of the morning as my search hadn't picked it up when it was listed and I'd been scouring ebay for days before. Needless to say it was a very tidy looking example. A few bits were immediately apparent. The transistor internals looked to be missing as did the third servo gubbins (I was planning to run an esc in the transistor box anyway), some link rods for the other 2 servos, the plate that runs between the tranny shift rod and the stabilising rod above it missing, motor wires cut, perished gearbox plugs and a small dink in the front bumper lower bar. None of this put me off it much neither did the lack of radio equipment or servos as I had my own plan in mind for that. The description said very little, basically that it was near to perfect condition, clear coated, no electrics and what you see is what you get. I've been permanently excited about receiving this over the last few days with a touch of apprehension about whether it would actually be as good as the pics, whether it would arrive undamaged and in fact whether it would arrive at all!! To keep my mind occupied, I cracked out some vintage wheels which I bought a long time ago (to experiment with something on the Bruiser) and decided to have a go at painting the Good Year logo's on. I did one wheel and the wife the other. Mine was on the left, hers looks better in the pic, mine looks a bit finer in the flesh Another update soon! Cheers
  18. I joined the vintage 3 speeder gang this morning! After watching these for many months, it seems there is no letting up in interest making snapping up a bargain seem increasingly more difficult. By pure chance, despite searching for these every evening I came across an Italian listing this morning that my usual search had neglected to pick up. It was exactly what I've been after, a tidy box art vintage Hilux. The buy it now or make offer was a fair bit more than I wanted to pay but after putting my rusty italian to good use and a bit of back and forwards early this morning we came to an agreement and in a moment of madness I decided it was my time to bite the bullet. In fairness I probably paid £100-150 more than I would have been happy with but with the rarity of finding just what I'm after, such is the price of admission I guess and he who hesitates is lost. Here are some pics, it will hopefully be making its journey from Italy tomorrow morning. I'm really excited about this, it is my first and will probably be my only foray into the truly vintage side of the hobby. Having enjoyed the whole build process with a rere Bruiser, which really made me marvel and appreciate these three speeders, I'm hoping it'll be that much more special owning a 35 year old real deal. I love the more scaler looks of the original Hilux and it'll compliment the Bruiser and Mountain rider very nicely. A few bits I've noticed, seems to be some servo hardware missing and maybe the spring on the gear shifter, the gearbox rubbers look shot for some reason, the rubber tabs are missing from the latches on the electronics box, there are no electrics (transistor box looks empty) but that's cool because I wanted to fit a modern esc in the original casing anyway so this allows me to do that without guilt. The shell looks lovely and has been clear coated, I hope it's as good as it looks though I wouldn't have minded doing a refurb on one. There is some tyre lettering needed and I'll need to source a manual so I can strip and rebuild the Gbox. It looks a nice one but of course I'm a little aprehensive now until it physically turns up!! The countdown begins...
  19. Thinking hard about this one. I'm after a good vintage Tamiya or Kyosho. The Javelin is pretty rare I've seen them go for 700-800 quid is that a fair value? There's one on fleabay now http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kyosho-Javelin-Similar-to-Optima-/231904443196?hash=item35fe94fb3c:g:W8YAAOSwsN9XBNIW
  20. Well I’m happy to say that I’m the proud owner of a vintage Clod Buster that I won on eBay this morning (apologies to any TC members who I sniped I just had to have one in my life!) I’ll pick her up tomorrow and the plan is to bring her back to box art so I can re-live yet another missed childhood dream. Couple of questions… Firstly, would you guys recommend keeping the original shell as the runner and purchasing a new body & decals for the shelf or should I restore the body and just have the one? I plan on running her, how hard I’m not sure but she will do some clodding around… Just not sure if it’s financially viable to go ahead and purchase a new shell and decals… From what I can gather it looks like $200AUD is about the cheapest I could get that for!!! The second question is around electrics… I want to use LiPo’s and an ESC – I’ll probably just keep the motors or put in maybe Sport Tuned in there. What is a good reasonably prices ESC and also servos for this truck in your opinions? My days are passed of purchasing the highest quality Hitec servos (literally been there done that with the 1/5 gas cars) so now am all about the balance of good enough, cheap enough as I am yet to find problems even with Turnigy Lipo’s and Hobby King servos! But the torque recommendations would be appreciated. I am using this in the Bruiser, which seems ok: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idproduct=51179 I have read on here that a few have used this, however with the Clod do I need two or a specific two motor esc? http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__46161__HobbyKing_X_Car_45A_Brushed_Car_ESC_AU_Warehouse_.html?strSearch=HobbyKing%20X-Car%2045A%20Brushed%20Ca Anyhow, thanks guys for the brains trust.
  21. Last weekend the fifth edition of the Nordic Vintage Challenge was held in Eskilstuna, Sweden. With 57 entries it was the biggest so far and we're hoping to attract even more enthusiasts next time! A bit of history: late 2013 a Swede by the name of Tomas Karlsson (TamiyaTomas on this forum) thought it would be fun to organise a competition for vintage rc cars. Because there seemed to be enough interest for such an event, the first Nordic Vintage Challenge was held in February 2014 at Ekilstuna Modellbilklubb (about 70 miles west of Stockholm). Back then 3 off-road classes were organised: Classic, 2WD and 4WD (classic allowed both 2WD and 4WD cars). The second NVC was held a couple of months later in the summer of 2014 at the Oslo Modellbilklubb in Norway, courtesy of Svein Harald Ytternes (SHY69 on this forum). This time drivers were competing in 5 different classes: 2WD, 2WD Classic, 4WD, 4WD Classic and Big Wheeler. 2015 also saw two NVC's being held: one in spring and one in autumn. By now the tandem of Tomas and Svein Harald worked as a well-oiled machine, with input from other enthusiast through the swedish rc-forum. After NVC #4 it was decided to scrap the Big Wheeler class (at least for now) and try something new. The new class had to be very accessible and cheap, as to attract people from all ages and with all kinds of budgets. And so the idea for a DT-02 class was born (well, let's not try to pretend we invented the wheel here ) under the name of Plastic Fantastic. The rules for PF: - Only 2010 Holiday Buggy (red and blue) and 2011 Sand Rover/Street Rover/Kumamon Buggy allowed - Hop-ups limited to ball bearings, 540 Jonson silvercan motor, shock mount brace, hinge pins for A-arms, Tamiya oil shocks (C.V.A. short set II and C.V.A. mini set II) - Go wild on the body (but keep it recognizable as a HB or SR as no alternative bodies are allowed) This class was a succes with 10 contestants. Training and qualifier heats were held in two groups and the 3 finals were held in one big group. Racing was intense and heaps of fun. With all cars having more or less the same qualities, it was really up to the drivers. Never knew you could have such fearsome racing at such low speeds At the next NVC the Plastic Fantastic class will be organised again, this time probably on both days of the race. While the other classes are not Tamiya-specific, there are quite some people competing with Tamiya cars there too. This year we had two Hot-Trick Hotshots, two Egresses, a 'regular' HotShot and a Super Hotshot in 4WD Classic and a modified NovaFox (raced by yours truly) and FAV in the 2WD Classic, while 2 Top Force Evos were raced in the 'regular' 4WD class. So far we've had drivers from Sweden, Norway and Belgium but we're looking to expand So if you want to know more about this event or are interested in participating, don't hesitate to ask questions! Here are some clips of the Plastic Fantastic finals (extracts) as well as links to footage of the entire two days of racing (you'll have to search and skip if you only want to see the PF footage). - PF Final #1: - PF Final #2:

  23. I'm going to introduce you a RC blog. Although the blog is in Japanese, but this guy is really good. Not only Avante, but also Hotshot, Samurai, Optima etc. Avante: page 3: http://sohmioaa.blog.shinobi.jp/%E3%82%A2%E3%83%90%E3%83%B3%E3%83%86%EF%BC%88avante-/?pageNo=3 page 2: http://sohmioaa.blog.shinobi.jp/%E3%82%A2%E3%83%90%E3%83%B3%E3%83%86%EF%BC%88avante-/?pageNo=2 page 1: http://sohmioaa.blog.shinobi.jp/%E3%82%A2%E3%83%90%E3%83%B3%E3%83%86%EF%BC%88avante-/
  24. I have found an original SRB! It was found dismantled in a shed at an estate sale, looks to be about 90% complete in terms of parts. The odd thing is that the gearbox seems to have some sort of glue sealing it, not much so opening it shouldn't be a difficult task. Would make a fantastic parts car or candidate for restoration. I found the electronics in a separate box, but unfortunately the wires seem to have been clipped. Unfortunate, but they are included if you would like to re-solder or rewire them. Bearings are also included for those that want to make this a running model. As expected the gearbox will need to be shimmed since it has clearly been sitting for a while. I have attached some pictures, and the rear dampeners and the pinion are included, they are just hidden in the chassis tub. Here are the image links: http://postimg.org/image/47u1ap9yv/ http://postimg.org/image/8i8p6af1z/ http://postimg.org/image/5bj7js0xj/ http://postimg.org/image/ak96kjd13/ Willing to let it go for 65$ plus shipping or trade for re-re kits or kyosho mini z optima, show us what you have to offer. The buyer will be responsible for the cost of shipping. I am located in the USA so shipping within the states shouldn't be to much since in this dismantled state it should fit in a large flat rate box. I always ship with a tracking number if possible. I am willing to ship the item out of country/over seas for my UK friends but the buyer will still be responsible for shipping costs. If a trade is made, we will each pay for the shipping of our own piece and we will provide tracking numbers. Otherwise, payments are to be made via paypal only. So let me know what you guys think, at this time not willing to part it out, if nothing happens here I'll just hold on to her.
  25. For sale is my Striker rolling chassis - £25 inc. UK shipping I bought on here for £30 inc. shipping a while back as a project, it was not a runner I had to strip the whole car, reinforce the previous repairs, create a new bumper mount on the chassis from plastex, repair the wheels, install new ball bearings, motor and steel pinion. It has been run for nearly 10 hours in dry conditions on tarmac, no problems please see my showroom link for more details This can continue to run but only recommended on flat dry tarmac, no jumps! If your looking for a cheap runner to get a feel of the car, this is it It probably isn't suitable for restoration because youll end up replacing most of the parts I'm only selling it as I have another restored Striker to run after being fortunate to get hold of a bundle of spares recently
