  1. Hello everybody, Like some of you, apart from my 'main' models (Tamiya, Traxxas, WPL) I also enjoy collecting and driving vintage toy-grade models from the 80s/90s/00s - from Tyco RC, Taiyo, Dickie Toys, and Metro RC. Eg. Tyco Bandit, Fast Traxx, Jet Hopper, Lamborghini Countach, etc. There's not much information for us though, so being a data/IT nerd I began building TycoCollectors.com a few months ago. It's taken a lot of time (and cost a bit to be honest) but so far I've documented 253 models. I'm aiming for 600+ so will need some help along the way. Particularly any owners of Dickie Toys and Metro RC, or just rare ones I don't have listed, feel free to contact me, or submit a new model yourself directly on the site! (Home > Submit New Model). The kind of data I document is the basics like 2WD/4WD, scale, etc. but also more detailed stuff like differential type, steering type, motor size, top speed, country of manufacture, etc. And of course photos are always needed. Anyways, I hope some of you enjoy this, as it makes me happy to create it :-)
  2. I am not sure what's quite wrong with me. I sold off my hobby grade converted Taiyo here, and now I have picked up another. This is the Taiyo off-road Tiger, also known as the Taiyo Giant Roader. It's got larger wheels than the classic Yellow/Blue Taiyo 4x4 but is otherwise very similar. This one was branded XGO by Tandy from 1995. Zero suspension but has large tires and the rear and forward wheels share the same differential right and left with two parallel prop shafts, making for a surprisingly capable off road car, especially with the (very) low gear selected. With a brushless this will be very fast, but will be prone to roll over so dirt and grass only. The plan here is quite simple. I am going to keep the battery bays so it can take 4 x C batteries, but I will add a connector to allow the option of the 2C Li-ion battery as well into the ESC. I will go brushless again with a12T 7200 KV ezrun. If that proves too hot I will move the motor to something else, and go for the 18T version. I will have a look at the steering, I think I might be able to get ball studs and turnbuckles to connect the steering over the original system, but we will see. The plan for the body is simple; remove the wing and reduce the rear roll bar height, paint roll bar and wheels white, take off all the stickers and dress it up like a clodbuster. If you compare if to the GF01 you can see they are a similar size. What I want to do is find a way of attaching the body to the chassis via posts, so I can clip the body into the Taiyo, but also have the body as an option for the GF01 to make a 4x4 1/14 clod. You can see the suprisingly good clearance with 105 mm tires. Now with a baby in the house this is really a build that might take a long time, bit I find it's nice to have a project to look forward too, even if I won't be able to make much headway. A little while ago @GeeWings asked if there was any consensus on removing stickers, I can't find the thread, was there an answer? 😀 I know compared to a hopped up TRF this isn't the sexiest build, but hopefully these have inspired builders on a budget and those interested in smaller scales.
  3. Here is my neo fighter with decals inspired by taiyo / tyco jet turbo hopper. I can make custom decals for tamiya's and make them look like vintage taiyo or tycos. Included a picture of my reproduction taiyo, tyco decals.
  4. I design decal stickers for TAIYO / Tyco Vintage RC. Looking to see if there is any demand for reproduction decals? Have already designed for Jet hopper / turbo hopper Heads up hopper BANDIT Nissan Racing Pickup Truck 348 ferrari Can do more on request.
  5. Found this recently. Taiyo Edge Freestyle BMX. Thought it would be nice to have something a bit different. It's in great condition and a runner, or cycler ha ha. I was surprised how big it was when it arrived. The figure is 12 inches tall, the BMX is 12 inches long and the wheel diameter is 4 inches. Bit too big to put on the back of my F350 then ! :))

  7. We all know that certain vintage Tamiya models were so popular that they inspired clones. And virtually all of those clones were made outside Japan (in places like Taiwan, Korea and China). Some were whole R/C kits with blister packs and everything (albeit made from lower quality plastics and lacking any fancy bits, especially in the motor area). Others were cheap toys controlled by wired remotes, or even "bump-n-go" models. There's one however, that was a high quality RTR item and was made in Japan. It's inspiration was the Wild Willy. It was manufactured by Taiyo of Japan, while being primary-marketed by Tomy. It was the Tomy/Taiyo 4WD Army Commander. It's release year was almost certainly 1983 or 1984. After many years of searching, I just acquired a mint/boxed example, so I thought you guys might find this interesting. Especially since this car is so rare that I've come across 2 in a decade. (I actually wonder if it was killed-off early in production due to legal reasons, and this might explain it's extreme scarcity). Who knows, perhaps this is the last brand new example left. The 4WD Army Commander is about 1/16 scale. It can of course do wheelies, but has full differentials at front and rear since it is also 4WD (unlike the 2WD Wild Willy). It also comes with a metal bull bar you can fit at the front, in order to prevent it from popping wheelies. The driver is styled and painted just like "Wild Willy", with facial features, and arms positioned - one holding the steering wheel, the other holding the gearstick. As always with Taiyo, the whole thing is made from excellent molds and materials. I'll leave it there, just thought Willy fans might like this If you are interested to see more, I will be blogging about it eventually. H.
