  1. Hi all, As most of you know my collecting has mainly been Tamiya Nitro for some time. I have just picked up another car to restore and I thought it might be good to do a restoration thread. This will show how I select a car to restore, how I analyse what I need, restoration tips etc. So, I have just picked up this auction lot from Ebay UK. These are the auction pictures. I paid £42 for the car and £8 so £50 all in. Now that may seem a lot to some if you go by the pictures however I will explain why I think that's a fair price. On first glance the car appears to be whats left of 43512 the Ford Focus WRC XBG TGS kit. The body certainly would suggest that. It does however have a lot of ball bearings on show, that might suggest a TGS-R chassis as they were ballraced. So what else can we go by? The dampers are friction shocks so that would fit. The engine could either be an FS-12SS found in the TGS range or an FS-12SW found in the TGR-S range. The two engines are actually identical apart from the carb throttle linkage and idle screw. Lets have a look at that then. OK, so that is the early throttle arm and so its an FS-12SS engine and confirms the kit is probably 43512 and its been ballraced retrospectively. Obviously lots more could of been changed but for now i'm happy. So my thoughts on the pictures. The engine has its recoil starter and its not broken. These are now nearly £30 to buy if you can find one The fuel tank hasn't got its pump snapped or the fuel connection broken. Another £14 to replace All the Tamiya radio gear is still there.(untested but a fair cost for two servos and an RX). Body is scrap but it will be cut up for paint removal practice and the wing mirrors and rear spoiler removed, cleaned and stored. The rest of the car is pretty complete. Par for the course on TGS restorations is a centre tub replacement and the underguards. The rest I will attempt to restore. The only other issue with these is the shock mounts snap on the front and rear gearbox casing. No way to tell yet but I already have new ones. So there you are, the start of the project, more to come when I get the car but here are some more auction pictures.
  2. Hello, hope everyone is doing well. When I was growing up, during most of my childhood, I really wanted a Nitro RC. But at the time, it was a very expensive hobby here in Portugal. There really was no online shopping and the local hobby stores were really expensive. Now, I am in my fourties’ and my son is 8 and is getting interested in some more serious RC. He already has an electric WLToys buggy for him as a beginner RC and enjoys it quite much. But with him, I am getting the bug again. And am thinking about getting an older nitro RC, kind of the ones I wanted back in the day. The idea is to get one, get it running and enjoy it. I saw a Tamiya TGS for sale. It is complete with radio, servos, engine. It has everything except the body. From what I can tell, the TGS is a 2003 model, so it might be a 20 year old RC car. But even with that in mind, it looks really clean and in good condition. I did not spot any rust or rusted parts. The chassi does not have scratches or big usage marks. It really looks like a car that wasn’t used very much. The seller says that all the electronics work well. He says the engine hasn’t run in 2 years, but that it ran fine the last time it was used and that it has good compression. I am thinking about pulling the trigger on it has a project to do with my son, but I am still hesitant as I know almost nothing about those cars. What kind of major problems can I expect? If the engine doesn’t run, can it be rebuilt? What kind of costs can I be looking at on the worst case scenario? Also, can gears and linkages have problems for being sat for so long? Or just “old age” problems? Can I get a current body for it? Or will I need to source a period body for it to fit properly? Any other words of advise before I dive in? Thank you! your help and input is much appreciated!
  3. Hi people I have recently bought a non working Tamiya TGS XBG Nitro, currently rebuilding the engine and greasing all parts and hopefully it will be a runner as I can see all parts are here and the servos have been tested and working perfectly. The body shell will be changed as it is damaged .
  4. Hello new to this club thought I would share my models with you 1st Model Tamiya TT01 2004 Citroen Xsara very well used had lots of fun sadly the bodyshell didn’t survive the whole car could do with an over haul. 2nd Model Tamiya TGS Nitro or so I believe bought non running (Fires ups just cuts straight out next to no compression) I bought this from a garage sale has been very very well used and abused by its former owner so far struggling to find parts for it which maybe why it’s former owner got rid.
