  1. So my Manta Ray from the early to mid 90s has been in a box for the last 30 years, with little to no usage. Its in mint condition, with original manual and transmitter, and still works beautifully. I would like to upgrade it but not sure where to start. I've already purchased and fitted brand new Tamiya tyres to it, and have bought a new shell and wing as I aim to paint it gun metal grey. I've also bought new decals to match the original. Not too concerned about cost though don't want to go overboard. Any tips on what I should upgrade in terms of motor, ESC etc?
  2. Greetings! I found a used Manta Ray locally. Condition was odd. Chassis was assembled and well used. Body, rims and wheels are brand new. Box has the model number for the 2005 re-release (Manta Ray was released in 1990, 2005 and 2018). Not expecting much as the box art was only mediocre but the used price was great.
  3. Used 2005 Manta Ray DF-01 for US$130. Ships from Hong Kong and cost to ship to US or UK estimated at US$60 +\- With original box. See build page below for details. Receiver and ESC will be removed before shipping.
  4. Hi guys, I'd like your advice on this: Yesterday I've powered up my Manta Ray, a couple weeks since last time I ran it. As usual I've checked that everything worked while holding the car in my hand before driving it, everything ok. So I put it on the ground and started driving it around but, almost immediately, the car stopped working. I've checked to find out that the ESC was the culprit: it beeps and flashes red like when the BEC is activated, but there's no current at all going to the receiver (and therefore the servo). Most important, it smells awful like something short circuited inside the ESC. Something must have gove awfully wrong, but I've no idea what. The esc is the TBLE02S supplied with the kit, worked well for over two years with both brushed and brushless motors. I currently run a 13.5 bluebottle on NiMh batteries, had this setup for 8 months now and never had a problem. It was cold and humid when this happened, but again I drove it in much harsher temperatures so I doubt the issue is in any way weather related. Now the questions: -does anybody have an idea on what might have happened? I would love to know, if there's any theory or not... I know that ESCs like the TBLE02S act out like that sometimes, heard a few stories of all sorts so maybe I will never know what went wrong -should I even bother trying to fix it? By the smell I guess I can answer my own self on this one ahah -any advice on what ESC to get now? I would like something reliable and affordable, I don't need anything too fancy but I don't have much experience with ESCs as I guess I've been lucky with the ones supplied so far. Thank you in advance chaps for any insight ✌
  5. Hi everybody. I'm new to the forum but not quite to the RC world. I've been gladly back into it for one year now, after a 22+ years break. I had fun with a Hornet first and re-building and running my childhood Kyosho Bis Boss after. Now I purchased a re-re 2018 Manta Ray to try and feel the thrill of a 4WD... The kit is still sitting in its box waiting for the usual hop-ups to show up (motor mount, drive shaft, ball bearings and a few more) and while waiting I thought I'd share some ideas and ask you guys for some wisdom and advice I'll be driving the buggy, mostly as a backyard basher (possibly without bashing it too much), so it won't be a shelf queen, but still I'm going to do quite some work on its looks before I put it on the road. I know that most people don't regard the MR body as one of the coolest, but I believe it's got potential I think it's a lot about the right paint scheme, anyway it's possible to enhance those sleek and funky curves... and there's lots of possibilities there. For now all I know is that it's going to be two colours, specifically metallic blue and fluorescent yellow.. still thinking about their layout though. First real doubt is about the wheels. For some reason I expected those "speed discs" (again, not the best rims to look at, I know) to come in white and I'd have been ok with it, but in the 2018 re-re they come in an obnoxious primer-ish gray and let's face it, they are literally screaming for a paint job. Thing is, it feels quite counterintuitive to paint over buggy wheels, which are destined to spin in all sort of debris, gravel, mud and anything abrasive.. they'd probably chip sooner than later... but still. This problem has been bugg(y)ing me for a while now, but I think I've decided to go ahead and paint those flying saucers anyway. Is it worth it in your opinion? I mean, of course there's gonna be some wear/chipping with use and touch-ups will be definitely needed from time to time, but, if I do a proper paint job (including priming and sealing obviously), will it hold decently and last in time or do you think it'll mercilessly chip off at the first contact with gravel? While I've already decided to try and go for it, I would still much appreciate your input, is this going to be a stupid waste of my time or does it even remotely make sense... thanks in advance! I'm still unsure about the actual colour, might go for yellow there too. Another thing I'd like to hear your opinion about: anyone ever tried to fit a driver figure in a Manta Ray? I think I'd like to try... nothing wrong with the box-art black windshield, but I always love it when there's a driver involved, as I find it adds so much to the vehicle, especially in case of a buggy. I randomly purchased a Paranoid Perry figure (the Avante's driver) on the bay some time ago... thought I'd try to fit it in the Manta Ray and if it didn't work whatever, no big loss as I really enjoy painting drivers anyways. I roamed the web a little but found no info on the topic. As previously mentioned, my kit is still completely unassembled so it's not possible for me yet to get an idea whether a driver could fit or not. I can trim it if needeed, and I also have a spare "torso only" version available, though it'd be probably much harder to attach to the chassis, which I'd prefere rather than to the body shell. Anybody able to share any knowledge on this? Thank you in advance for your help I'll happily post pics once the build starts to get interesting, here or in the build section of the forum.
  6. So when I was a kid I always wanted a manta ray, but it never happend, 25 years on here we are. The intention for this build is for the car to be used mainly at the beach. So here we go! 26/08/2018 FINISHED PRODUCT, See bottom of thread for more.
  7. Yeah so It’s another Top Force build, big whoop wanna fight about it!? right now that’s out of my system, back in the game after more than a few years, and as even average runners of Madcaps and Terra conquerors are getting mad prices right now (plus are we really gonna see a re-re if either) I’ve gone for a Top Force kit. It’s currently stuck at a post office in Hong Kong due to Coronavirus a long with the basic essential hopups. So this is basically the teaser trailer.
  8. I got this for my birthday in May, but I was waiting for my upgrades to get here. Everything is finally here, so let's get started!
  9. Hi I live in the UK and I'm looking to get a Manta Ray for my brother who lives in California, problem is, I can't find any retailers local to him. I really don't want to have to ship from here as the postage will be a lot. Can any of our US Tamiya fans help guide me to an online retailer (that actually sells Tamiya!) where I can buy this and get it posted out. He lives in Malibu so I guess anywhere in CA would be fine. Thanks in advance
  10. Hello, A buggy I bought to restore happens not only to have no oil in the shocks BUT no friction parts, so I need the guts that form the seals on the bottom of the main damperbodies as well as the caps for the top. I need two mini sets and 2 standard sets, as would be on any of the cars tagged. Fire Dragon, Terra Scorcher, Manta Ray. I doubt it matters but they are the more modern type with the base that can slid off if you pull up the spring and the screw to adjust the spring length rather than the clip in yellow parts. I know there are some small yellow rings and O rings in there normally. If anyone know of a part bag that has all I need in it can you post a link please? I am in UK. Thanks in advance, Andrew
  11. May be of interest to some on here. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Collection-Of-RC-Cars-Manta-Ray-Stadium-Blitzer-Land-Cruiser/192494090930?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131017132637%26meid%3D0ad5a5a81f014e06a7a1dd77e31fdf87%26pid%3D100033%26rk%3D6%26rkt%3D8%26mehot%3Dpp%26sd%3D202276584894%26itm%3D192494090930&_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042
  12. I recently purchased a NIB re-re Boomerang from ebay, I was soooo excited, but alas, my payment was refunded with a message saying 'sorry, it has already been sold' So now, while my refund is 'pending' on paypal, I have had some time to think... I want a 4WD buggy, I always wanted a HotShot as a child, but, on reflection, I see there are a number of other options... So I turn to the infinite wisdom of the gestalt! I want something I can bash, so durable with good spares available, I want to be able to have different wheel options and I will be fitting brushless kit with a view to running 2s and 3s lipos. My options are: Hot Shot, Bigwig, Boomerang, Manta Ray and Dark Impact Is the Manta Ray any good? (the price seems quite cheap in comparison to the others). Is the Hot Shot worth the extra premium? Is the Bigwig as sturdy as it looks? Or... am I best off going for the boomerang as there seem to be more of them around, so parts would be readily available and cheaper? Or... should I go for the Dark Impact as it's newer and may handle the bashing better? So many questions... I hope you guys can help!

  14. After spending a long time digging through threads, trying to find a comprehensive list of all the period Hop-Ups for the DF01/TA01 platform and its descendants, I realized there were none. So I decided to make my own. I used futureworks' list as a base and expanded it from there. It's still in progress, but its sorted by manufacturer, and I'm trying to get a link for an image of each hop up, preferably in original packaging for each item. I have used the exact terminology that Tamiya used for naming each Hop-Up. I hope this is helpful for people who want to make a "checklist" of sorts for their cars, or for others like me, who just wanted to see what was out there for this chassis. 15. Hi all, I am in need of 2 lots of Thundershot Joint Cup set (50335). They need to be new or nearly new. If you have only 1 set, please let me know. Thanks in advance.
  16. Hi all, I'm after 2 pairs of joint diff cups. Part numbers are 2595040 (long gearbox joint) and 2595041 (short gearbox joint) for the thunder shot. They are the grey/black coloured ones, not the more recent polished ones. I'm after new or hardly used. Please let me know if you can help. Thanks in advance.
  17. Clearing out some of the DF01 spares I accrued when upgrading the mint Blazing Star I picked up into my Terra Conqueror Evo. Got the barely used CVAs on eBay. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F263332910023 https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F263332901741 As well as these I have another pair of each item, plastic DF01 shocks mounts, metal wheel hubs for the driveshafts, steering arms, MSC, plastic top wishbones, a DF01/TA01 bathtub chassis and a bunch of other screws and spares. Give me a shout if you want anything. Cheers!
  18. As title. I am aware of the Fibre-Lyte parts, thought I'd try my luck here first. The Press Parts Bag would be the ultimate, as I do need the wing stay and battery plates too (kinda). I'm after a fair few other DF01 parts too, converting a TA01 with FRP chassis to DF01. Cheers.
  19. Hello everyone. New user here. My son's sixth birthday is next month and he wanted an RC car. This sent me online to discover that the world of Tamiya is alive and well. Nostalgia fuelled, I hunted through my parents' attic and returned with my old Manta Ray. I built it with my dad about 25 years ago as a replacement for my Hot Shot (may she RIP). Anyway, I hope to use this thread to document the rejuvenation of my Manta Ray, so I can race my son's new Lunchbox. I am totally clueless as to how to do this, so expect lots of stupid questions. I have browsed the forums but was bamboozled by most of the jargon and acronyms. I look forward to friendly advice and tips from you experts, and hope that this thread might become a resource for other newbies who unearth cars their dad built for them many moons ago. So first report: Charged my 25yr old nicae batteries with my 25yr old charger and things are happening! Motor runs and steering (servo?) is trying to turn, but the wheels don't seem to want to. I'm guessing the steering rack just needs a strip down and grease. Got some new 3300mah NiMh batteries and a new charger today, so here's my first stupid question: The charger has amp settings and recommends the highest (4a) setting for my batteries. Just wanted to check that this is actually the best setting to use? Also, can/should I use my 25yr old charger on these batteries? (photo attached) Thanks!
  20. I'm feeling impulsive this morning and so I have relisted my Boomerang and Madcap NIB body sets at reduced prices and I'll also offer, for fellow TC members (make sure to tell me in your 'best offer'), to drop the price to $100 for either or $180 for both if you buy both ($100 accepted for first, $80 for second). Shipping included in the U.S. or at-cost 1st-class int'l post, and probably cheaper than quoted by ebay (will adjust down / refund excess). http://www.ebay.com/sch/waynethebrain/m.html Vintage Boomerang NIB Body Set (TCer price = $100, or $90 for 2) Vintage Madcap NIB Body Set (TCer price = $100, or $90 for 2) Vintage QD Manta Ray NIB Body Set (TCer price = $30) Vintage Saint Dragon Decals (TCer price = $25, or $20 with anything else)

  22. Hi guys Not been around in a while - hope everyone is doing great.... A couple years ago I took a stock vintage manta ray and turned it into a saloon car sort of thing, with a Subaru body and a brushless motor... Thing is with the body running to close to the ground and the track and wheel base reduced it didn’t handle so great.... No I would like to turn it back into a buggy.... Has anyone got some links and pointers for bits? I want to base it on the same chassis, i.e. a top force / manta ray kinda thing... I am looking for the full kit, alloy arms, drive shafts, carbon chassis parts etc etc etc etc - THE WHOLE LOT..... Apart from fleabay I am a bit lost as to where to start, erg. I cannot find a DF-01 yeah racing upgrade anywhere - I am not sure what parts are interchangeable etc etc etc... Any help / advice / comments are all greatly appreciated..... I don’t mind if something costs a few squid, but this is just a wee bit of fun to have a basher to knock around for fun, thanks so so much
  23. Hi, I'm looking for a used Manta Ray body and wing to use for a vintage meet coming up in September. Happy to take something needs to be repaired, but really one that has original colours and decals. I know I can get a repro and the RTR decals but I don't want to spend heaps on something that will just get trashed anyway and then put in the cupboard for another year to get trashed again. It will need to be posted to Australia so can't really afford to spend too much, let me know what you are willing to let yours go for. Nick
  24. A Manta Ray in good condition. disassembled completely and build up again from scratch as per manual. Body and Wing are ok to drive but have some cracks. SOLD. This topic can be closed.
