  1. Hi all I have just recently decided it would be good fun to return to this Hobby (35 years later) and see if its still is for me. Back in the day I had a Tamiya Fox and later a thundershot (the year of the OG release) needless to say the amount of data i had to collect to start filling the gap was overwhelming, I got a little lost, but fortunatly, there are places like this forum and also my best friend youtube was a great help... so what was my criteria: easy on the pocket: i had to buy everything from scratch: car, battery, charger, etc. all should fit in a relatively tight budget. a decent car: while budget is king, i didnt want anything that will make me unhappy with the purchase upgradable: I wanted to have the ability to upgrade the car if needed (parts, engine, gears) so community and part availability was important building it: I want to remind myself of the build experience inc. painting. easy operation: I want the car to work for me and not the other way around to keep things short, I went for a neo schorcher, but actually, I went for a TT02B based car (could have been another TT02B car). it seemed like it answered all of my criteria. (BTW, I had no idea what a TT02B was 2 weeks ago) for those who want to see the list of things I purchased with prices along with the kit here is a more detailed list: the car: 180$ https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DSVF3BY?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details the battery and charger: 52$ https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09QRQPSF8?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details - yes its a nimh. metal ball bearing kit: 5$ https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003508639967.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.44.21ef1802Wl2nZf metal drive shaft: 7$ https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256803425336193.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.39.21ef1802Wl2nZf&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa4itemAdapt&_randl_shipto=US metal motor mount: 4$ https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256803091385160.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.33.21ef1802Wl2nZf&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa4itemAdapt&_randl_shipto=US 19T pinion: 2$ https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256802686602052.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.27.21ef1802Wl2nZf&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa4itemAdapt&_randl_shipto=US transmitter/reciever (w. gyro): 30$ https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804602560812.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.15.21ef1802Wl2nZf&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa4itemAdapt&_randl_shipto=US foam wheel cover: 1.5$ https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256803716864776.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.21.21ef1802Wl2nZf&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa4itemAdapt&_randl_shipto=US 6KG servo: 11$ https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256802817927490.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.10.21ef1802Wl2nZf&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa4itemAdapt&_randl_shipto=US metal servo horn: 2$ https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2251832573460693.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.5.21ef1802Wl2nZf&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa4itemAdapt&_randl_shipto=US Grand Total: just about 300 USD which is something I could commit to in order to see if this hobby can re-grow on me... of course I can explain my rational for each of the items, but mostly, they simply fit my needs at this point in time... NOTE that the items are on their way, so nothing was delivered at this point and I cannot vouch for their quality... if you made it till here - then this post was of interest to you thanks for reading. [update] forgot about the tamiya white & metalic blue paint jars I also purchased for 5$ each - yes I am going to paint using a brush (with my kids)
  2. Hi All, After a bit more experience I really want to monsterise the neo scorcher and improve ground clearance. Hence I now have some monster tyres > Using the stock build, with an adjustable racing mount, I can use a 15t pinion on the stock Tamiya spur (70t) but I feel it might still out too much strain on the Tamiya torque 540 stock motor. I feel there are some other options I can use: 1. Get the high speed gear set where I believe I could use the 48dp gears and I understand from this post that the 78t spur could fit? Can anyone confirm? And what Pinion should I use? 2. Get a brushless motor. Can anyone confirm if this will help better cope with the higher torque? If so can anyone recommend a cheap one to start with? Anything else? Thanks in Advance!
  3. This is for all things TT-02B chassis or Neo Scorcher. After a couple of years absence from RC cars, I just build the Neo Scorcher and started looking for tips in here. I only found scattered posts on specific topics, so I decided to try out a general thread for the TT-02B chassis. http://youtu.be/gHC0XOIHw-I Having sold the majority of my Tamiyas, I only have few shelf queens left, which will not go racing, but the Neo Scorcher may just hit a small track this summer, so I'm looking for simple upgrade suggestions (I want to keep it simple, cheap and fun) I have already fitted ball bearings, but I haven't decided a motor yet. The kit includes a 380-type motor mount, and I consider getting a 28mm inrunner to keep weight down. Any suggestions on KV for this? (14T -16T pinions will fit the mount resulting in 11.38:1 - 13:1 overall gear ratios)
  4. I recently asked about bigger wheels for a scorcher and was very impressed with the help. Also looking to slow it down for the kids. Some threads have suggested limiting the travel of the controller (I have read that running at low speeds for long can cause damage?) but what about a crawler motor? If so which one...would it be 55t and with brushes? Any help appreciated? Alun
  5. Hi all, have been away for a while but I am back to try to complete this build thread before my first child arrives imminently...! I'll break with tradition and post a teaser picture of the final result, instead of incrementally going through the build sequence steps and photos I really enjoyed this one. It's a TT02B MS kit at heart, with various body (reverted to Neo Scorcher main body) and wheel modifications. Will be updating over the next few days. I'll also post all of the hop ups and parts used here soon.
  6. I'm after a replacement for my knackered Rising Storm body. Not fussy about paint colour (if already painted), or shell design (Dual Ridge, Neo Scorcher, Aero Avante - , Rising Storm or Gravel Hound) - any will fit. It's just for bashing, so cheap as chips please. Alternatively if anyone knows or sees one going cheap in the UK please let me know as I have a spare tin of Metallic Purple which has no home! Thanks!
  7. Hi there, My RC history in short:- I got a second hand Boomerang as a teenager for a Birthday present, Then got a Thunderhot, heavily modded it and still have it along with a Midnight Pumpkin (boxes for both) again modded. Then got a Traxxass T Max(still have box) but was never great with the nitro mix and found it a pain to get running correctly. Still have it as well....Then in my mid 20's started racing Mini Z F1's then Mini Z touring cars. Got into trikes and never looked back till this week....now in my 40's and two boys are looking at my RC cars and started playing with mini Z kits..... I know the Tamiya kits are WAY more fun so went on Gumtree and bought a decent looking used Neo Scorcher, ordered 2 new batteries and ballrace set.....here we go again I think. Photo attached I hope. QUESTIONS:- 1-Does the Neo Scorcher (TT-02B) model have any notable weaknesses I should know about? The motor has been uprated and from state of tires its not been used much. It also has the wheel transmitter I have preference for after my Mini Z years. The original motor and case are included as is the charger you see below. His batteries are shot so need to get some. All for under £100. I have ordered a ballrace set already which when I fit will at least give me a chance to strip and get inside the kit to see what has changed in nearly 20 years! Hope he still has the instructions, I did check and he does not have the box. Collect in a few days. 2-Are the Pumpkin & Thundershot boxes and instructions of any value? The cars are WELL USED with a few of my own mods (larger heavier duty bumpers to name but one) so will, unless someone REALLY wants them, keep them for the boys. Can add photos if anyone is interested. 3-or the Traxxas T Max (its complete with Box, instructions, radio gear, EZ start and a few spares as well as some mods BUT as mentioned above never had it run for long as was poor with the Nitro mix, so its been run in about.......15 years I reckon) 4-To get the Thundershot up and running I need to get the little steel pins that go through the stub axle to drive the triangle wheel carriers and also 4 new wheel carriers. Anyone any links for these please? I know I have them but cant lay hands on them after nearly 20 years. 5-Whats the sensible value/choice for RC 7.2V batteries these days, was 1700 Red packs over yellow in My day, just ordered 3300NiMh so hope I got that reasonably right?
  8. Hi everyone! I built my Neo Scorcher and have been loving it! I've done a few upgrades so far: Bearings Alloy steering Full turnbuckles Steel gearbox joints and steel universal shafts Alloy center shaft and steel joints Sport Tuned Motor Alloy motor mount (not installed yet) Tamiya large dish wheels (2 sets) 1 with Pro line Dirt Hawgs, 1 with Tamiya Dual Block I may also upgrade shocks soon. My question is... I'd like to go brushless or at least try it out. I'm returning to the hobby after many years so I'm new to brushless motors. I'd like something that can run well with the TBLE-02s speed control included in the kit. I'm running nimh packs. 2000 mah and 3000 mah. Do I need a sensored motor or can I use either sensored or sensorless? I'd like a jump in speed but I don't want to loose too much torque. I mostly just bash but occasionally run on an old dirt track. Oh and I'd also like something moderately priced. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and suggestions! Thanks!
  9. I never actually made a build thread for my Neo Scorcher. I only posted pics of the chassis in a Neo Scorcher thread. A few days ago, I finally got around to completing the body. I originally procrastinated on doing the stickers in fear that I would screw up, and I really liked the box art. I recently found a post by @shenlonco explaining to use a little bit of Windex on the backside of the stickers. This allows you to re-position the sticker many times. After you have it where you want, just squeegee out the Windex with a paper towel. This worked wonderfully, and I finished the body. Here's what went into the build. This was a case of "I know it doesn't need it, I just want it". I have not installed the high speed spur gear yet. I did put a brushed HPI Firebolt 15T motor and a 21 tooth pinion. ESC is a HobbyWing Quicrun 1060 Showing the steering. I'm still using the stock tie rods, but there is a lot of play in them. This will be changed soon. With the stock tires, the 15T motor and 21 tooth pinion seemed ok for testing on the street. I then changed the tires to something taller because I liked the added ground clearance. I found the tires on eBay. They stand just as tall as the Lunchbox wheels, and the brand is Kforce. With the taller tires, the motor gets hot real quick, it drains the battery really fast, and feels like it doesn't have brakes. Way too much gear, not enough motor. I have a 9T 4370kv brushless motor and ESC for it that I will be installing today. I also plan to go back to the 17 tooth pinion when I put the brushless setup in there. I'm also still running on NiMh batteries as I have not yet made the jump to LiPo. So, I would say that I am off to a good start with lots of room to improve. Future updates to follow.
  10. I have a TT-02B based NEO-SCORCHER with a problem I have finally got around to running it for the first time (after almost 12 months) The problem is the beeps When I turn it on - it beeps - 2 times per second - continually The steering obviously needs centering,- it does "steer" to a degree. But the throttle does nothing - not a degree of motor turning !! What have I done wrong ?
  11. I have spent the last few weeks building my first (if you exclude a simple Buggy 30 years ago) RC car - a NEO SCORCHER So far - things have gone reasonably smoothly But now - I find Tamiya instructions, somewhat lacking I am stuck with the wiring up of the ESC and Motor The (stock, Tamiya) ESC has three cables from/to it - Coloured Yellow, Blue and Orange The motor has Green and Yellow connections The instructions state ESC should have Red, Orange, Yellow - connected to Yellow/Red on the motor And Black, Blue - connected to Green/Black on the motor So I am guessing that I need to connect Yellow to Yellow and Blue to Green This leaves Orange from the ESC with no connection ? Please help me - before I go insane .........(er) !! Also - is there not supposed to be a tube in the kit to hold the aerial wire up in the air ? Mine does not come with one !! Thanks
  12. I am almost finished building a NEO SCORCHER and am concerned that the drive shaft is not "free running" enough - ie That the (stock) motor is going to struggle to turn it .... Whilst it is not exactky stiff to turn - it does not "spin" I have greased all of the connections correctly - but I guess that even the stock motor has considerable grunt - so will have to wait and see... How "free running" should the set up be ?
  13. hey guys - given the finite nature of funds and the less finite nature of cool tamiya stuff i'd like to have there are always decisions to be made about what to keep, what to sell, and what to buy instead of something else. well i find myself faced with two buggies i want equally for different reasons. a used Astute - which i've really warmed to now that my collection has a Madcap and Saint Dragon; and a NIB Neo Scorcher - which could be a fun build/runner. both will cost about the same $... maybe a tiny bit more for the Astute, but negligible. i really don't know which way to go on it. i think i'd eventually want both... and i have no idea if the supply of one or the other is going to get thinner, faster, over time.
