  1. Im repurposing this thread to keep my builds in one place, leaving the posts about my TT02B Scorcher, linking to my Terra Scorcher thread for the pics and comments for when i put it together but i dont expect there to be much more happening in that thread. My Terra Scorcher build. Hey all! A couple of days back i started a Plasma Edge 2. This is the first ever kit im building and my first hobby grade RC car since a Marui Big Bear i had back in the nineties. (Had two or three toy grade cars since) A couple of years back i got back into RC with building/flying fpv drones and foamboard planes, was good fun but ive since fallen out of that, too much repairing compared to RCing, im hoping a car will be a bit less maintenance per battery pack In an earlier thread over in Other Makes i showed off the 3d print that got me back in RC this time, after getting that together i wanted to pick up a kit. I was looking between the Plasma Edge 2 and the Neo Fighter, both look real good but since id never had a 4wd i decided on the TT02B over the DT03, even tho it cost a bit more. Following the instructions to get it together was very straight forward after looking at a couple vids in preparation and building a 3d printed 1/10 rwd buggy a little earlier. As for pics of the build process ill go with "draw a circle, draw another circle, now draw the rest of the f###ing owl" rather than spamming lots of pics that most of everyone will have no interest in seeing. I followed along the instructions, only difference from box stock was adding in ball bearings. Since getting it to the above state ive had it out for a little test drive, so happy with how it moves, even if the ground was mostly frozen except for a little patch of gravel at work. Today i properly attached the antenna holder using the top hole on the inner servo mount, added some foam to the underside of the battery hold down to prevent rattling and added little shelf where a battery voltage alarm was attached as i dont know what, if any, lipo cut off the carson dragster 70A esc has (it was included in the kit rather than the tamiya esc i was expecting). I also designed and printed 10mm extensions for the shocks to hopefully give a bit more ground clearance. Sadly they turned out to be a bust as the arms will not go more than a mm or two lower. Was expecting them to be able to go down at least 10mm since they go up more than that but the cups for the drive axles hit the arms just slightly below horizontal. To get a bit more clearance ive put in an order for some 96mm tires on 12mm hex rims, its not a huge step up so hopefully ill be fine without changing the gearing, the rims should be large enough that they will fit over the axle carriers, offset wasnt specified but in case the included rims arent good ill just 3d print my own to fit. Until the new wheels (and some other random bits) arrive i figure im going to paint the body shell, from my tabletop mini hobby i have an assortment of acrylics and an airbrush, seeing that the proline body colors are water based i feel relatively sure they are also acrylics so i think ill be fine with what i already have. Im having a hard time deciding on how id want to paint it tho, the strongest thought i have is red because "Red Wunz Go Fasta", i think it would look nice with the visible black parts of the chassi, white shocks and black/white/blue/yellow of the decals. Will update upon more progress.
  2. A couple of days ago I decided to try rallying my M06, some tarmac slides and some light off-roading. Long story short I decided that I'd be better off with a buggy. I went on ebay looking for a used Grasshopper 2 and ended up with two Frogs. Frog A was the first one, this one came with a body, good back tires, and a controller. I didn't realise until later that it was short a dog bone! So I looked up dogbones, the Universal Driveshaft hop up, I decided to use vintage car restoration logic and buy Frog B which has shafts, posts, and a bumper. Frog B was the first to arrive, I must have spent 20 minutes looking it over un amusement, and not in a cynical "this is so bad" way, I was actually quite fascinated. The front suspension actually had halfway decent damping despite the lack of shocks, certainly better than the friction shocks on modern entry level kits. Unfortunately Frog Bs battery was misplaced I guess, but I did get a card for the sellers social media accounts (which I promptly pitched because I dont care). But I couldn't complain, you'll see why.
  3. I went online and started searching for Grasshopper 2s, somehow this lead to me buying a cheap original Frog that will need a few things. So what do I need to know about these? I know about transmission braces, and theres tons of rear axle and diff mods. My plan is to re-build it with bearings, fix whatever needs fixing, drop a Bolink beetle body on it, and keep it stock right down to the mechanical speed controller. If theres enough interest I might even make a build thread on it.
  4. I've previously bored you all to death with the story of my route to Tamiya ownership (for those masochists amongst you: feel free to take a look at my story here - click link) so I thought it would be only good manners to share with you pics of the OG. This post is probably long overdue, but I only just today put the finishing touches to the full refurb that I started a number of months ago, having chosen to take my time on it and do bits here and there in-between building some other new models (see my Lancia 037 and Midnight Pumpkin builds if you're really thirsty for punishment). So, first off: some pics of the old girl in her pre-refurb condition. The chassis is in completely original condition with all parts present and unbroken! And then we turn to the body, which is best described as being in 'honest' condition. Namely: completely original with all parts present, just not necessarily in the best of condition! It definitely saw some use and endured some suffering at the hands of young-me! I even have the original TX in its original box to complete the set! So that's the starting point. Next up: the strip down!
  5. Hi everybody! Like many people, I caught the RC bug in my early teens, when getting my first Tamiya kit (the 1/12th scale Toyota Celica Group B Rally Car). Fast forward some ten years (and a couple other Tamiya kits), I got back into the hobby as a grown up, finding my way into on-road racing, leaving Tamiya behind for other manufacturers. Another fifteen years later, after a little more than 10 years break, I got back into RC for a third time (well, second return, third time in it over all), this time in Off-Road racing as well. So, today I'm still basically 99% a semi-serious racing (or at least race-track) guy. By now, I own two Tamiya cars again, my M-07R and my TT-02 Type SR. But when you reach a certain age (mid-forties in my case), one starts to remember his childhood heroes... in my case the Avante (always wanted wanted that as a teenager, but couldn't afford it - today I could, but it's still more that I want to pay for such a fragile - and compared to the real modern racing cars/buggies/trucks - not even all that capable car) and... the Subaru Brat. (Yeah, I know, I took my sweet time getting there). So now I'm wondering, if it's worth getting one. I know it's not very capable at all, compared to what I'm used to drive (i.e. Yokomo YZ-2, Xray XT-2, etc. - all in modified classes, so up to 5.5T brushless, etc.), and I don't expect it to be. But since it's not even half the price of an Avante (always talking about the re-re kits here, not interested in the real vintage stuff), I was wondering if this might be a fun vehicle for the yard, or even our track (without the large jumps). So... how fragile is the re-re Brat? I'm a fairly capable driver, but that doesn't keep my cars from having an accident, once in a while. Can it take square LiPos or only rounded batteries? Can it take mild(!) brushless power (like 13.5T or weaker)? Oh and it's actually the blue version that caught my eye (found it in stock as well) - not for the blue body, mind - I might even get rid of (=sell) that and get a standard white one to paint myself), but I like the black wheels and plastics that come with it. So any advice? Seems like there are no real tuning parts available for it, which is a little downer for me, as I really like putting stuff like that in.
  6. Hi All, Looking to put dyna blaster wheels and tyres on my beetle/blackfoot project. Has anyone done this? I have rere frog hex adapters but am assuming I'm going to need different front spindles for the front wheels. Any help muchly appreciated!
  7. Gearbox for the Monster Beetle, although it should be a direct fit for all ORV cars. The design has been tested hard in my MB, through several vintage events and bashing sessions in all weathers. This eliminates the main problem with the car, the separation of the gearbox sides and destruction of the diff. With this transmission the kit diff will hold up to high powered motors without needing to be upgraded. You can also move the motor to set the pinion mesh and change ratios, viewing the mesh clearly through a polycarbonate window. What's included: - 3mm carbon fibre gearbox sides, CNC cut and engraved - CNC machined billet aluminium gear box structure - CNC machined aluminium motor mount plate - Polycarbonate end cap - All necessary additional fasteners inc. hex socket screws all round - Shipping worldwide £120
  8. Want to buy: NIB or used (in good working condition) Tamiya Frog "sway bar" or "stabilizer" set for rear. Looking for Trinity #7002, or You-G #TM-8413, or a CRA rear stabilizer set. If you have one you can sell me (USA), please get in touch! Thanks, Terry
  9. When I purchased my Lancia Rally years ago, there was evidence that the chassis was original. One of the clues was its gearbox, which had a solid final drive gear and hex-style outdrives and cups. My Lancia has been anything but period-correct since then, so now I offer its complete supplanted gearbox. What you see here is a complete gearbox from an early ORV-chassis Tamiya. This sale features a fully-assembled gearbox; matching hex-style outdrives, driveshafts, and axle stubs; rubber boots; and the plastic pinion gear cover cap (Part C12, not pictured). Also included are two rear suspension arms and complete dampers (not pictured). The gearbox is in used condition and complete, featuring the original solid final drive gear instead of the later differential - a distinguishing feature of a stock Lancia Rally/Subaru Brat gearbox. It is fully assembled but not greased. Part C12 is not pictured but will be included in the sale; two 3 x 27 mm screws will be required to attach a 380 motor, or two 3 x 30 mm screws for a 540 motor. Upon request, a proper 380 motor adaptor can be included in the sale. To my knowledge, this gearbox was built up with plastic bearings. The gears turn smoothly with no binding, and visual inspection reveals minimal wear. The outdrives, driveshafts, and axle stubs are also in used condition, but with intact hexagonal ends showing little wear. The accompanying rubber boots are supple but show a single small hole each at one end, at its widest point. It is unknown to what extent these components were used - I swapped them out for modern CV joints prior to running the model on which the outdrive assemblies were equipped. I am open to offers and trades; however money is a priority given the circumstances under which I am selling these parts. At present, I am looking for approximately $60 CAD, which will include shipping from their location in Canada. I am able to open up this figure to negotiation where a specific shipping cost is requested. Where other currencies are considered, the Canadian dollar will provide a baseline for conversions (and remember that it is weak right now ). I accept PayPal, either marked as 'gift' or with a nominal increase added to compensate for transaction fees. As well as I have attempted to describe these parts, pictures do a better job; thus: One set of axle stub and outdrive is shown here: The other set is in this photo: The condition of one of the driveshaft ends, which inspection confirms applies to both ends of each assembly: I am also including a pair of rear suspension arms. These are in used condition, with a single crack at each damper mount point, but still usable. Plastic bearings will be fitted to these if part of the purchase. Note that I cannot endorse the 'vintage' nature of the arms with absolute certainty. The rear dampers are in used working condition, and are proper vintage parts. Of course, if you wish for more detailed photos and/or have any questions, do not hesitate to ask me! I have ready access to all parts mentioned and wish for you to buy with confidence, so I will be more than happy to answer your queries. Thanks for reading! Edit: Note that I will be absent from May 11th - 28th, so communications will be sparse during that time, and shipments delayed until the 29th.
  10. I have decided to move onto something else R/C wise, so I am selling my 2015 Tamiya Monster Beetle. Its been ran approx 8-10 times at most, but has def been alot of fun. Was built as per the manual, but the diff has been locked (so there is no clicking etc), full bearings were used on the whole chassis in place of the useless plastic bushings, also has carbon fibre battery stays fitted, custom wheelie bar, also included is a used LRP Quantum ESC, Reedy 12x2 KR motor and a standard Steering servo. Also comes with all the small spare parts that were left from the built, spare body mounts etc. Original build manual and original box too, complete with insert. Also comes with a full set of spare diff parts (brand new) and a spare spur gear (brand new). Also included is the Tamiya Land Cruiser FJ40 bodyset I painted and fitted last week to make it more scale like. The black wings/fenders and silver runners on the body were painted using Tamiya X paints on the outside of the body, but in no way detracts from the look. The wheels have been painted gloss black with a silver lip. The tyres are not glued and surprisingly stay on with no issues even with the 12x2 motor powering it. Now the slightly bad points. All of which are on the bodies. 1 - The Monster Beetle body hasn't been painted, the decals were applied and it was laquered, its looks ok for a runner. But the finish has turned very orange peely over time. 2 - The Monster Beetle body has a tiny crack above the side windows (as pictured) and one of the side windows has a crack in it (again pictured) and both mirrors are missing and the wipers are now CA glued in place (as pictured) 3 - The Land Cruiser FJ40 Body has some blemishes on it as I stupidly ran out of metallic red before backing it with silver (as pictured) All in all it would make a great runner, or a good shelf car to add a mint body too as the chassis is in almost mint condition. Due to weight and size I would prefer to post within the UK. Price is £120 posted, or I can split and do just the MB for £100. It will all be very well packed up inside another large box so as not to damage the kit box or anything else. Any questions, or any other pictures needed please feel free to ask. Many thanks James
  11. Hey All Some of you may have seen my eBay listing for this item but i figured i would try to sell it on the forum as well. I have been parting out my ORV related items to fund other builds. Up for sale is a great package for someone with a Re-release Frog or Brat or Vintage Frog, Brat, Monster Beetle, or Blackfoot. Selling a very lightly used MIP Ball differential that has less that 3 runs on it! These Ball diffs only began selling at the start of this year. You will get: - Assembled MIP Tamiya Super ball Diff Part Number: #16210 - Remaining MIP Ball diff grease - Tamiya ORV Gearbox with all mounting and closure screws - 16 Tooth pinion with set screw and matching spur gear - Tamiya gearbox pinon gear cover with screws - Assembled Tamiya Universal Shaft Kit Part Number 53908 (dog bone ends are in the boot so you cannot see them in the picture) - Tamiya rear axle shaft joint boots - Tamiya rear plastic hubs with drive pins The re-release Monster Beetle and Blackfoot now come with the universal shaft kit. The re-release Frog and Brat need the universal shaft kit to take advantage of the MIP Ball differential. If you have a Re-release Frog or Brat or any vintage Frog, Brat, Monster Beetle, or Blackfoot, this would be everything you'd need to take advantage of this new ball differential setup. Price is $105 PayPal'd and shipped to the US.
  12. I love vws, I love brats but can't afford a totally separate model, so, so far this as happened. The sand scorcher wheel base is exactly the same as the orv chassis'd brat so bar a mounting conundrum for the body, a rear window to source and an engine, so far so good.
  13. I just got another set of HPI #2100 front rims in the mail... These came with the front axle adapters, which are getting harder to find... These will get tossed in the spare wheel bin along with several other white pairs, and several black pairs... One more set of #2100s and I'll have (3) complete white sets and (3) complete black sets... And last week I got (7) NOS Pro-Line 2.2 tires in the mail... Road tires mostly, but it did have the Striker II's I've been looking for forever... Can you ever have too many wheels and tires??? Terry
  14. This is probably an old chestnut but my Brat rerelease rolls over so easy its hilarious. I understand the science etc and has anyone managed a mod or hop up to stop it? I'm using the rigid shell seeing number 1 son pilfered the lexan one. I have never had so much fun at all with a rc car, but I worry the flip will happen on tarmac so perhaps some quality rims for tarmac may be in order. Let me know your thoughts.. John
  15. I recently purchased a re released Brat kit minus an ESC and have built it up I think well minus the grease in a few wrong places, but we'll keep mum about that. The front suspension is intriguing me due to the lack of a damper. Myself and Ed back in 2001 bought an original Brat off a boot sale and struggles to keep the chassis together due to the front radius arm mountings. So looking at this 'new and improved' version I have just built I can see the radius arm issue is still around. I've seen a few videos on youmeither and the upright kits and printed parts look great. I wonder though thinking how a car's anti rollbar functions, Tamiya would have junked these two parts and gone for a one piece rollbar assembly clamped inside a tube which could have bolted laterally and screwed into the same holes. I'm gonna see what I can do with some bike spokes. I originally worked in electronics engineering and loved R&D so this is hitting my tinkering spot.
  16. FS: used Thorp Dirt Burners "Blackfoot" drive system. 99% complete. Counter gear, Diff Gear, Dogbones, Axles, Hubs, Bearings... The only thing missing is one of the bolts for one of the Hubs. One bolt is included so you can match. http://jpegbay.com/gallery/005377784-.html#1 Taken from a used Blackfoot bought from EBAY. Disassembled, cleaned, lubed with Tamiya Ball Diff Grease, reassembled. Shows some wear - seems to have been "well-loved". $100 Paypal OBO. Thanks! Terry
  17. http://r.ebay.com/EQ1iGy Anybody know anything about this "cage" on this Frog??? It looks really cool... I want one... Terry ETA: down in the description: "custom nerf bar cage"... I guess that answers it!
  18. Hello, I'm looking for a pair of rear body mounts for the Lancia rally 58040. They appear to be a bigger size than the frog ones because they screw into the battery stay. Does anyone know if that is true? Does anyone have any? thanks!
  19. While digging through the RC junk pile, I found an old CRP catalog... DL it here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8ehh73fs3sjwczq/Team%20CRP%20-%201987%20Catalog.pdf?dl=0 Thanks, Terry
  20. No affliation... Just thought I'd throw it out there... http://r.ebay.com/vYwB6X Good deal on used CRP part... Missing the piece(s) that go inside the tranny case, though... Doing a little more searching on Fleabheyz turned up this: http://r.ebay.com/CczAXp Matches the red chassis of the MB, and is complete. Albeit, it is more expensive... Again, no affiliation... Terry
  21. I'm looking for any Super Blackfoot or Bush Devil spare parts. I'll also take any King Blackfoot spare parts. Also looking for any Frog or Blackfoot hop-ups (vintage or otherwise). Used but working condition is fine. New is preferred. Especially WTB part E5 (side-ways servo horn). Whatcha got??? Terry
  22. Hello again, Couldn't think of a better topic name, so I just named it after the model - Subaru Brat. Got it recently for 10 euros and didn't see much imperfections, except the lack of body, until I started reassembling it - the front suspension was made completely wrong and the screws were so hard and uncomfortable to reach and unscrew. But with some help from my father, the screws were off and I cleaned and reassembled the front. Altough, one porblem is still here and I don't know what to do. A nut, which is holding the front wheel is 'stuck' (don't know if it's the right word to use in such situation). When I try to screw or unscrew it, it just keeps spinning/moving in its place. Here are some pictures, so it would be easier for you to understand: Maybe someone of you have had similair problems? What hould I do? Also, I would be interested in a Subaru Brat body.
  23. anyone know if the 7-cell hump-back NiMH batteries fit the ORV chassis (blackfoot, frog, etc)? there's the opening above the battery slot for the receiver pack. just wondering if anyone's tried this...
