I just bought a 2015 Monster Beetle, and I ordered a MIP Super Ball Differential, so I can run it with a stonger motor. Does Tamiya’s Sport tuned motor fit, and in case yes, what pinion could I use to squeeze some more speed out of it? Alternatively, I already have a lightly tuned motor. What pinion could I use on that one? Apologies, if this is a stupid question. I have been away from RC since the late 80ies and back then we used Technigold motors.

Just finished building my MB and I was pretty disappointed in the suspension performance. There are two main issues that I am looking to resolve. Thought I would spend a day off my other projects to take a look at this. 1. Front travel is very limited, over sprung and over damped as standard. 2. Rear suspension has a falling rate action due to the trailing arm geometry. The suspension actually gets softer as it compresses, contributing to the wallowing ride and poor recovery from jumps. I decided to fit upgraded shocks and machined some parts to improve the geometry and accommodate those shocks. On the front I used GMade XD piggybacks (75mm). These are awesome and you can tune the rate by changing the oil reservoir pressure, without switching springs. Very nicely made too but do take a long time to build. This mod hasn't changed the travel, that will require some more extensive mods to achieve without rubbing the wheel arches, I will do that later. These shocks are a lot nicer than the kit CVA units although to be fair those aren't terrible, just not as tuneable to get the right settings and don't have the same quality feel. On the rear I used Pro-Line Powerstroke shocks for the Slash (front). These help to counter the falling rate geometry as they have a two stage spring, the rate ramps up once the smaller spring is completely compressed. I made some extended links for the trailing arms to further improve the geometry. Also made front mounts with many adjustment holes in place of the pathetic flimsy plastic piece in the kit. That's a really poor design. With this installed the back end feels 100% better. There is zero flex in the mounts and I can tune the positions to get the car running nicely on mixed terrain. This is never going to be a race machine of course, but I really thought the standard set up was poor.
