Actually have to rethink about the 4.5T in DT-03, according to the paperwork for both the motor and ESC, they only 7.5T (or something like that) or higher should be used in off road buggies...

Chicken...

😁

Tell them you're on the road. Who's to know when you accidentally leave it?

Yes, but it is a bit harder to pass a DT-03 off as a touring car...

Touring ice cream van?

(other vehicular dessert retailers are available. Mobile patisserie?)

Like it 👍👍

I have a couple of other embryonic food van ideas that I may not be able to resist. It could be I've found my RC niche...

Sounds like that motor is a beast then! The gears in the DT-03 seem pretty basic and robust from what I remember of my build. Maybe get a speed run if you can? Let's see what these puppies are capable of!

That conformal coating sounds interesting, I remember you talking about that before. Did you just use a spray? I saw some on Amazon for about £12

Yup. Spray. This is the stuff I used:

https://cpc.farnell.com/ambersil/6130004030/conformal-coating-acrylic-400ml/dp/SA02317

Mask connectors and away you go. Clean first and use decent masking tape because the tape has little space to stick to and you want to be able to pick it up by the tape. I did a few coats, probably far more than necessary.

Hmmm. Speed run you say. £20 bike computer like this do the job?

Truck sized road tyres - Aqroshot?

How long a straight piece of tarmac do I need to find?

Stumbled upon the real life version of my Capri body, I think. Nose looks just the same, it's also a 4 headlight MK1 facelift and has the boxed out rear wheel section.

I put a 5.5t motor in this, just "because it's there" and because the question was asked elsewhere. I left it with a 19t pinion and truck tyres because, well, in for a penny and all that. But also I kind of figured for a first run lower gearing would be more wheelie-prone and that might be the most obvious setup issue.

It's better than I expected except the unglued tyres which, obviously, are a no no. I've now got 60g of extra weight in the nose and that probably helps a lot but it can be controlled fairly well. Can obviously only go to full throttle momentarily in the garden (even though we've a big lawn) and it won't have got close to its top speed, but I think in some locations it would be fun to have that burst of power available. It could get quite a speed up on a a wide open beach at low tide...

Maybe a better motor would be my old Tekin Redline 7.5t motor, which I think is closer to this than the 10.5, maybe because the extra the 5.5t offers isn't really used much. Think I might look for something else comparable to that.

Will also try it on tarmac with the half bald buggy tyres sometime. That could be a quick route to owning some slicks.

Update: with glued tyres this 5.5T motor is nuts. Took it straight back out. I underestimated how much tyre slipping was going on. The amount of extra weight required to keep its nose down would be silly. I haven't tried adjusting TX and ESC settings because I think that's futile when I've a more suitable motor on hand. However, I will put it back in for some tarmac runs on buggy wheels some time, when I get round to it. It currently has the JC King Pin truck tyres on, they grip very well on grass.

In other news, our 3 cars got an absolute beating the other day with a few kids round. In her infinite wisdom my OH though it'd be nice for them all to come round after school on my birthday and race rc cars. 🙄

I dreaded the distruction and just figured that I'd take each car out of circulation as something broke, meantime turned my back and ate cake. There were many moments that made me wince. And that's me, I'm something of a crasher myself.

And simultaneously my TX has somehow lost its ability to dial down the throttle end point.

Unbelievably, all shock towers, arms, suspension mounts etc etc remain intact. Wing and body mounts not so much. I take this as a good early indication that my various structural mods are working quite well.

Oh that nearly brought tears to my eyes mate! The thought of many kids running my RC cars all over the place in the face of likely potential destruction!!:(Good to hear they survived the ordeal!

So what motor are you gonna stick in it next?

Yeah tell me about it. It was one of those moments when someone's trying to do something for you and the intention is lovely but it fills you with dread and you haven't the heart to say anything. Mitigated though by the fact that what we've got is all pretty run of the mill and hardly treated with kid gloves normally anyway. So no great harm done. I saved the ice cream van shell after a few mins, which is the only thing that couldn't be solved with a commonly available part. Well, I need to remake its body mounts and I'm not looking forward to lining new mounts up to the holes perfectly, but the old mounts were pretty shonky to look at, being made of an old pipe fitting and a pate container!

I'm also aware that my kid is relatively sensible and very open to dialogue. But I maybe hadn't realised just quite how big the difference is between him and some of the agents of destruction he shares a classroom with.

Motor wise I've put the Speed Passion 10.5 back in, which I think is about ideal for the car. I have an old 7.5 I bought recently, which is a fair bit quicker, in my B64, so I'll try that some time. I'll also get around to trying advanced timing settings on the 10.5 soon, but I kind of like the fact I'm running it in its most efficient and easiest on the motor setting. It doesn't get hot even though with a 19t pinion and truck wheels it's a long gear for a DT-03. Combination of internal motor and 4wd means things get warmer in the B64 for equal motor and gearing.

Use DR instead.

Thanks. You got me looking that up. It's what I should've been using all along...

Although in this instance it is weird my EPA adjustment was doing nothing. I've used it plenty so I know what to expect from it and it did absolutely nothing.

From what I had seen, DR (if you have it on CH2) should be used for kids. EPA are just that, end points. I know you use brushless programmable ESC, but if using "auto" ESC, the throttle tends to max out before full travel, typically around the 60 - 70% range (my worst tops out at 45%). So, for example, on a EPA 100% TX, full throttle will be achieved at, say, 67%, meaning the remaining 33% of travel is wasted. So I will set my EPA at 68% (an extra % or two for "drift"),  and if I mess around with that before handing off to kids, I need to remember which ESC should have what % set when I am driving it myself. Where as, DR just knock off the available power to them.

Even on programmable ESC, I occasionally find that they still need a few % adjustment on the EPA, so, personally, I use EPA doe fine tuning and try not to mess with it afterwards.

For reverse, I tends to set EPA at 120% as most (brushed) ESC only allow 50% reverse speed anyway.

Finally got the Capri body mounted. Hope to do some decals sometime. Some sort of bumper/skid also on the to do list.

Hey, now it's a touring car (kinda), I can stick that 5.5T motor in it. 😁

Looks frickin' great mate. We need more pics of the new shell mounted on the car on this thread!

I must say I continue to be pleased with the resilience of my DT-03 shock tower supports.

20220116_221059

After yet another bash with small children who are even worse drivers than I am, an inappropriately fast motor, many goes over a jump and a couple of accidental flights off a 2m drop, all remains intact. Well, not the wing mount, but I hope to get another, and that went ages ago now.

M3 bar highly recommended...

Lol, I don't know how you can do it mate, let those little monkeys drive it into certain doom! I think you need a dedicated car for such wanton destruction;)

Good to hear the M3 supports are doing their job!

Good to hear that it's holding up. Now go get a try on the postal. I tried it yesterday and it was a really fun track .

PS: Your car looks really sharp on the pepper pots B).

It doesn't look so sharp at the moment - that's an old pic - it's lost its wing and had a few dings...

But yeah, postal here we come. I have a patch of tarmac and some semi suitable tyres. Which I hope might make said tarmac a bit less slippy than usual.
