So many nice details! I like the simple but  effective idea of fitting the front bumper on the back! Gotta love the Unimog :D

CC-01 Isuzu Mu Rally Raid

Switching gears to the first offshoot chain reaction project, the aim is to have a higher-speed truck, which could perform as a rally car but with larger wheels. I will be converting my CC-01 chassis to this effect.

Body:

Green-Red-White-Black is a great combination that Castrol race cars exploit quite well. The sponsors will come from the leftover stickers from the earlier three main projects. I've been playing with some ideas, finally settled with this digital mockup:

Mugen-11-6.jpg.fba9780f88a23b193550a997dbf383bb.jpg

The first step was to strip the previous paint using isopropyl alcohol and some scrapping/sanding:

After some work it came out fairly clean, although some crevices proved impossible to get all the paint out.

Color spraying is complete. I got a tiny bit of bleeding past the masking which will be rightly corrected along with some manual brush painting of details. A final clear coat will be last.

Colors used:

  • White Primer
  • TS14 Black
  • TS26 Pure White
  • TS35 Park Green
  • TS86 Brilliant Red
  • TS13 Clear (once detailing is complete)

@OoALEJOoO nicely done. Looks great and can’t wait to see the final version.

How did you fix the rear bumper to the chassis. I might copy but a bit smaller!

The way the front and back suspension arms + bumper parts mount is pretty much interchangeable. I essentially mounted the rear as if it were the front (used the U-shaped shaft MB17 to mount the rear arms + F3/F4/MC15/F9) and the front as rear (screw pins to mount the front arms + bumper C19).

@Busdriver On further thought, I think part F3 had to be trimmed a little to fit on the rear (cut some depressions to clear bumps on the rear face).

Brilliant thread. Now all we need are some mud wrestling pictures!!!

Some shots from the trail hike during the weekend

Winch fell off. I forgot PVA glue was used temporarily, I will now use the mighty E6000.

Finished the sticker treatment and it is looking better than anticipated

I'm very happy with the results. It has a Paris-Dakar flair to it. Perhaps Rally Raid is a better description instead of Truggy.

Still pending:

  • Rear bed

This is the same reason why I have adopted the white/red/green colour combination to several of my cars ;)

Well done with this one!

Build Details

This car was built to be a cross between a buggy and a rally car, something that can be fairly quick along a reasonably flat gravel/dirt ground but at the same time be able to take some light jumps. Rally Raid seems to be a good description. To that effect:

  • Motor: stock silver can
  • Pinion: 16T
  • Tires: LandFreeder kit tires (part 19805543 CR-V tires)
  • Wheels: Tamiya 2-piece 5-spoke wheels (54554), exterior ring painted black
  • Expected top speed: about 16 kph (might later change to 20T pinion to increase to about 19 kph)
  • Servo: JX-DC6015
  • ESC: Tamiya TBLE-02S
  • Hop-ups:
    • GPM aluminium steering assembly (didn't work out of the box, had to trim some brass bushings to make it work)
    • High-torque servo saver
    • Rubber-sealed ball bearings
    • Rear diff. spacer (to ensure teeth engagement)
    • Encapsulated electronics
    • Custom front aluminium skid plate

MF-01X Hornet Beetle Rally

Is it a Hornet or a Beetle? It's a Hornet Beetle :)

I originally used my earlier Ford Escort MF-01X for the Nissan Hardbody build, but later got a dedicated kit for it. A MF-01X VW Beetle Rally kit was chosen and now the Beetle body needs some paint. Having a 239mm wheelbase, it will be used as a second shell for the Escort.

Since selling my Hornet some years ago, I've been itching to reproduce its fantastic livery. The Beetle body it's a perfect opportunity.

VW Beetle Body

The aim is to have a nice Hornet flavor but at the same time something that harmonizes with the Beetle form. I have a full Hornet sticker set plus some leftovers stickers from a Comical Hornet build.

After tinkering with some digital mockups, below are the shortlisted options. I'm having a hard time choosing! Which one do you think looks best? Ideas welcome!

I love the way your chain reaction is working. A really great thread. For the Hornbeetle I think scheme 2 with the red is my favourite 🤩

EDIT: just realised I had looked a the number incorrectly. It’s actually number 3 with the all black roof that I meant. Agree with @Badcrumble

I would go for never three - I think the roof integrates into the scheme better than on version two. Having said that, any of the other schemes would look good!

A cool alternative to the Escort!

Thanks for the feedback guys! I'm personally on the fence between #3 and #6. Looks like I'll be settling with #3 by popular vote :)

On #2 I tried to add some white on the top, to match the sides, but I agree that #3 (all black roof) integrates a bit better.

Great weather today and with that painting has started.

VWX Red-Wite Hornet-01.jpg

The choice of colors is, and painted in the following sequence:

  1. PS-60 Mica Red (for a very slight orange tone)
  2. PS-1 White
  3. PS-5 Black

I'll go with a single masking approach, where everything is masked on a single operation and then specific mask layers are removed as the painting progresses. Therefore, masking was done in 3 layers:

  1. Windows
  2. Black color
  3. White color

Red paint will go first, then white masks removed, white will paint the white areas and back the red, black masks removed, black will paint the black areas and back everything, window masks removed.

Its always great to see how the digital mockup body becomes alive on the real thing

Stickers are placed:

It's quite a bummer that the model does not come with light buckets.

Next steps:

  • Cockpit (rally)
  • Wheels
