It's a little early for this, but December is going to be a madhouse around here, and I have the time now. So here goes.

It was a big year this year, lots of new acquisitions, and as such, I imagine the coming year to be much slimmer on new purchases. This year saw the Black Edition Clod, King Yellow, and Bruiser grace my shelves, as well as another Grasshopper and a Terra Scorcher to be kept new-in-box for a good long while. On their way to me now are an MST TCR-M chassis kit (been waiting for it to get here forever, I fear it's in one of those zillions of shipping containers in Long Beach) and another vintage model that I won't reveal yet, but you all will appreciate it. (And yes, this means I have already broken the promise not to buy anything until I wore out the Grasshopper's tires. But when you see this thing, you'll understand why I had to have it.)

I also entered the world of 3D printing, with a Creality Ender 3 V2, which so far has only churned out a couple of small bits and pieces for RC cars, but I'm working my way up to printing an entire body shell with it.

Most of the summer was spent re-landscaping half of our front yard and turning it into an ornamental garden, and in doing so I incorporated a small scaler/crawler course around it. I'm looking forward to spending some good quality afternoons and evenings out there in the spring and summer.

Between now and then, I have quite a few projects to keep me busy:

Bruiser: still sitting at 95% finished. I'm not crazy about how the paint turned out, but I do intend to run it, and run it a lot, so at least this way I won't feel terrible if it gets banged up a bit. I still need to install the lights and wire them up, and decide whether or not to apply the blue stripe decals, and then it will be ready to roll.

Kyosho Progress 4WDS: I pulled this off eBay in 2019, cleaned it up, and it has been sitting ever since. I now have a full set of period-correct Futaba radio gear to go in it, along with the original MSC. I don't want to run it a lot, but I do want to drive it once or twice and see how it does.

Traxxas Stampede: I was in the process of turning this into a gasser dragster with a '41 Willys body when I suddenly decided to steal its wheels and tires for the CARToons Corvette idea. I need to get it some new shoes. Not that I have anywhere to run a drag car, but it will look cool.

Brat: I botched this paint job too, and it took all the gumption out of me. It has been sitting for two years now. I need to gather up the strength (and brake fluid) to strip the body so I can repaint it properly. I still kinda-sorta want to do the "Manhattan Project" theme with it, but I'm not sure.

Custom Chevy Blazer scaler: I have all the bits, I just need to get started on it. I had this lined up and ready to go when my dad surprised me with the Bruiser, and that took precedence. This winter I'll get back to work on the Blazer.

Bodies to paint: I need to paint the Blazer body, as well as a Miata body for my MF-01X, a Bolink Chevy Lumina for the old Associated 10L, and a VW Golf Mk1 that will eventually sit on the TCR-M chassis when it arrives.

That other vintage car that's coming: I doubt this will get more than a strip-and-clean and a run or two before hitting the shelf, but that's a nice weekend's worth of work.

I'm not making any more vows not to buy anything, but at this point it would have to be something extraordinary (a bargain price on a NIB Kyosho Icarus or something) to get me to buy. There's nothing else out on the market that I want right now, except maaaaybe that M06 Lotus Europa...

For me, I need to slow down my RC build as it is getting costly and finish up my half dozen static projects that started earlier this year but kind of ran out of steam (and moved onto RC) and just left there.

Also got dozens (probably over 50) static kits in storage that can be built and will not cost another lump of cash.

To start with, I think I should finish the 1/24 Karmann Ghia before I start on the 1/10 one I have incoming.

What a weird year. I moved and I managed to add a few cars to the collection. I finished my CC01 FJ and I built an FF03, re-re Bruiser and I bought an HG-P407 specifically so I could compare the quality. Spoiler alert, it's not quality. I also finished the restoration of my Turbo Optima. I started that probably 15 years ago. :D Mostly, I've been focused on organization after the move. I think I've found all the rc boxes with parts, manuals, radios, etc. I'm surprised at the amount of worn out tires I've saved. Here's a quick list of projects that should keep my busy:

FF03: Literally done, just need to bolt on the mirrors, scoop and wing. It's the JAS Motorsport Civic. I would like to add some of the TRF dampers whenever those become available again.

FF01: This was my New Beetle. I've added the 53155 damper set and purchased the Castrol Civic body set. I have not figured out where the boundary should be for the white and green. So, it's awaiting paint, etc. I also added a set of HPI wheels and Tamiya tires.

RC10: I have a mostly complete RC10 team car. It needs wheels/tires and a body. I did buy the new JConcepts Protector body for it.

Super Avante: I ordered it back in July as my birthday present. Might be the first thing I work on.

HPI Nitro RS4-3 and Nitro RS4-2 - They are just dusty and the engines are gummed up. Probably just need a good cleaning. This is where I saved all the tires. I own dozens of wheels sets with massive curb rash and worn out treads. Most will need to be tossed.

Next year I'm thinking of delving deeper into the side of the hobby I both love and hate the most: painting bodies.  Shaking spray cans, masking tape stuck to fingers, some swearing, and fumes are in my future.  I'd love an airbrush setup but that's a pipe-dream for now.

I've got a new crawler arriving soon.  That'll be my Christmas project and for the rest of summer too.  Part of my reasoning for getting a crawler is because of the bodies.  There's something about crawler and m-chassis bodies that touring cars and buggies can't match.  I've had a few ideas kicking around in my head and I'd like to see if I can make them happen.

XV01: I'm considering something I never thought I'd do.  I might sell my XV01.  It's just becoming too hard to find anywhere to drive it other than on the road which is dull and simply wears out tyres.  I cleaned it up so it looks almost new and it's just been sitting there for months now.  I haven't even finished the Yaris body I bought for it over a year ago.  Trying to find gravel or flat loose dirt areas where I am is becoming too much effort.  I'd never get anything near what the kit is worth, though.  Maybe it'll collect dust until Tamiya re-release a ST185 and ST202 Celica body.

DT03: The Neo Fighter I just finished is going up for sale in anticipation of a the TD2 Astute being released next year.

M06: I've been piecing together a rally Mk2 Escort but it's on the chopping block too for the same reason as the XV01.  I might get an M08 to sit beside the M07 instead.

M07: Awaiting more CRX bodies in stock at RCMart.

Need to organize the parts bins too.  Going from half a dozen down to just a few would be nice.

I finally scratched the itch and got back in to Tamiya this year with a Rere Egress in September.

This got me predictably hooked and I swiftly followed it up with a GF01 which I’ve explored the world of hop-ups with and used a Wild one and FAV, both of which I plan to rebuild and do some additions/ with 3D printed parts etc.

I’ve also got another GF-01 ready to build that I had planned to put a Jimny body on (already purchased) but I’m still deciding if I’m going to pair them.

I’ve also got a Blockhead Wild One that I’ve put away for Christmas.

I’ve got a lot of time off in January so was hoping to do some serious building but we are going away on holiday at the end of December (Covid travel premitting) and then visitors coming to stay. So, I reckon it will be a few snatched hours here and there until February.

I’ve also bought two Proline ‘66 Ford F-100 shells which I have no real idea what I will do with but want to do one as a low ride/rat rod kind of ride.

There are plenty others on my wish  list. I would like a truck too but need to look in to it more first. A lunchbox is a ‘must have’ sooner or later and I would love a Unimog too. I’ve also fallen in love with the Top Force Evo, it’s probably my favourite looking ‘modern’ Tamiya buggy. I would also really like to get a Flamingo to hop up. And moving off Tamiya for a moment; I’ve got a growing interest in some of the Kyosho kits.

I’ve got lots else going on next year; work will be moving up a gear, we are potentially moving out for a few months while we have a reno done (planning processes permitting)  and will possibly take a trip back ‘home’ to Europe.

I'm not sure which kit to get into. Over late 2019 - 2020 I bought 10 kits, I have unbuilt - Frog, Hornet, Fighting Buggy, King Yellow, M07R, VQS and coming at Xmas a Super Avante. The big problem is storage, the house is a bit of a mess. I have 3 weeks off over Xmas so I'm going to try to do a bit of cleaning out which will give me space for built cars.

2021 brought a Thunder Dragon into the fold which took so long to arrive, I literally forgot I ordered it until it showed up on my doorstep. A pleasant surprise that day I suppose. I'm getting my wife a black diamond ring for our 10th wedding anniversary so she asked me what I wanted. I wanted something memorable and briefly considered a new guitar or amp, but I'm pants at playing, honestly, so I came back to RC. I thought about the 934 but wasn't feeling the need to get caught up in that hype to procure one so I fell back to one of my old favorites : an Avante (which will see plenty of use).

Finding good deals on resto candidates is becoming increasingly difficult. Remember, vintage RC cars are "rare" and "collectable" to all now, lol. This means I'll busy myself with completing and tightening up some projects around the hobby room.

Traxxas Bandit: I always wanted an old school 2wd buggy (think late 80s/early90s) I could run guilt free. With Associated discontinuing RC10 parts constantly and Kyosho on shaky ground, I couldn't see running an RC10 or Ultima in anger. The Traxxas Bandit is a design based in that era (with roots stretching back to an old personal favorite, the TRX-1) so a project is already underway and parts are everywhere of course.

Traxxas Stampede: I've got a weird plan with this one, basing on a theme from a completely different manufacturer. More to come.

Avante: Wait until our actual anniversary date and then build it and run the cam-lock wheels off it like I would have in '88. That's in April but fortunately our Christmas gift to each other was the Lego Titanic which will keep us occupied (and me distracted) for a good long while. Special thanks to my wife for waking up at 12 am and placing the order the second preorders opened up. Did you know my 9 yr old daughter can easily fit in the box the Lego Titanic was shipped in?

Clod Busters: The Jconcepts Regulator is cool and expensive as heck so, being a cheapskate and a tinkerer, I will make my own. I'd also like to scratch build a mod Clod based on more current designs. The Cube chassis is a work of art and inspiring. I also want to finalize and rebody my Bennett Clod.

Bodies: Speaking of bodies, I need to paint a few million of those of course. I did do some this year but couldn't bring myself to do any hardbodies (stock Clod resto and Bruiser mainly). The fear if failure is strong in this one.

King Cab: I have a shelf resto and a runner project just sitting around. I should do something with them.

Double Dare: resto job

RC10s: 8 is great, right? well I've got 8 RC10s hanging about that need work. For once I scrambled to buy them up before prices went to the moon breaking my usual steak of buy high/sell low. Even an idiot like me comes out ahead sometimes.

Kyosho Car Crusher: I have a soft spot for these and managed to get them all except for the Vette (I have a real one but I don't see me stuffing 66" terra tires under it anytime soon). I'm partial to the Big Boss and have an idea of making a twin motor but 2WS variant. These kinda were like the WT01/WR01BITD, only bigger and more imposing.

Opitma: What if I had an Optima, like my re-re, BITD and couldn't afford to cast it aside for the hot, new Optima Mid coming out? What would I do to keep up with the newer mid motor cars? Well, that mindset might be the basis of a project involving my Optima runner this coming year.

I've done a load this year, as I've got a baby on the way, and I'm going to have to slow down the making and tinkering quite a bit. Usual cost, space and time.

This year I got into Tamiya, getting the QD Pumpkin in Feb 2021 - which was then followed by the two MF01x trucks and a GF01 - all modified into 1/14 scale trucks. That's four a year, which I'm not planning on doing again. I want a collection where each car is different, not just a collection for the sake of it.

My aims are:

  • Install water proof servos and receivers on all my cars so I can wash them down after running (and run in the wet)
  • Swap out all the self tappers with stainless steel ones
  • Buy a QD Thunder Dragon and install a small brushless motor
  • Maybe upgrade the tx/rx so I have one good quality tx linked to all cars (and a spare tx for nephews)
  • Perhaps get one proper car for my Birthday (November) to make over Christmas. At the moment a GF01TR with white wheels and a 1/14 clod body is the most likely candidate. I'd go brushless to offset the low gearing and have a proper monster truck.

I think I'll keep any eye out for body shells (Taiyo, Tandy, Radio Shack) as well as QDs from the MT range (Clod/Blackfoot) and if I can pick them up for a good price I'll get some. A small brushless conversion is something I could do. I will try and focused on used cars from charity sellers so I don't add to even more plastic, and can think if it as a donation.

However after spending a lot of money on cars (not just the Tamiyas, but lots of Nikkos etc.) next year is about getting out an using them, not getting too many more. In the end it can just become about the next car, not what you've already got.

Thankfully all my cars are 1/14 scale, there's not much more I can add - and I want to keep them at this scale - if I went to 1/10 then there would be so many I'd want; 2 x XV01 made up like the Sega Rally cars, a Clod, Grasshopper, Stadium Blitzer, King Cab, pumpkin low rider etc etc. this way keeps the list down!

This year I think I've managed to sell more models than I've bought which I think is a first !

Next year I really must finish off the kits I've already started, not buy any more and sell a few more off.

Somehow I think the not buy any more pledge will be broken...

Well I’m selling everything that I can bear to part with so with any luck by Christmas I’ll have a cupboard in the garage with about 6 or 7 cars in which I use regularly and enough cash to by all my relatives new houses.

I think the new year will take me further away from Tamiya, they just do not do the type of RC I like now.

I will keep a couple of DT-03 and maybe my Mudblaster II but I prefer slower and far off road now.

Lots of stuff for sale now to try and free up some space.

Hmm...I looked up my post for the similar thread from last year...

"My goal for 2021 is going to be 'stay small' - finish my GCM Racing JK trail truck and then move on to something new.

We'll see how that pans out. I keep buying parts for other projects..."

Well, I still haven't finished the trail truck and my inability to do so made me step away for a bit. Now I'm back with a newly purchased CR-01 to monsterize and a TD-4 on the way. And a Mini Monster to finish as well as a couple of M-cars to strip down and service on top of a wealth of projects to start / finish.

Bring on 2022!

Love threads like this, you guys are so much more interesting that I.  I'll probably build 10 more monster trucks and just come take a look at TC Showrooms when I need more variety in my RC life :)

In all seriousness, I'd like to think (like many others here) that I will slow down a bit on the building and enjoy running what I have.  The last few weeks were a step backwards in purchasing another LMT and 2 more SMT10 Builder's Kits along with a Tamiya monster from a fellow member, so will have to finish those before I even think about buying anything else (but that probably won't happen).

Here are my foreseeable plans:

TXT-2 Racer Build - Working on this now, just got the truck torn down last night and parts ordered.  I've raced a TXT before, but never gave it much of a shot before giving up.  Hoping this will be different, have a pretty good plan (in my head at least).

LMT Gift Truck - My dad has recently started coming to races with me and him only having a 1987 Clod, stock TXT-2, and 2.2 tire brushed SMT10 is not going to work out.  Bought a lightly used LMT roller and will suprise him with a gift.  Mechanicals and details are done, body is painted, just waiting on decals.  Can't wait to give it to him.

SMT10 Bigfoot 8  - Going to build a loose replica of one of my favrorite trucks of all time, the Bigfoot 8 racer.  Haven't decided if it will be a Sport Mod or Pro Mod truck, will probably get started on this guy after the new year or maybe even Spring 22.  The SMT10 tube chassis is the perfect look for this truck.

Regulator Chassis Retro Racer - My stock chassis racer did well this year and won some races, but want to build a Regulator for some reason.  I honestly don't believe it will outpeform my stretched stock chassis truck and have beaten plenty of Regulators with mine, but have 5-6 sets of Clod axles lying around and need to do something with them...This truck will be painted as an 88 Chevy in USA-1 livery as a tribute to the missing link truck that was never completed by Jasmer back in the day.

ACRC Chassis ProMod - I run my SMT's & LMT in Pro Mod currently and they do very well, but think I'm going to do a proper all out Pro Mod truck.  Have not decided if it will be a shafty or Clod-based, but as soon as they have some chassis available I'll order one.

HG P415 Hummer H1 - Have always had an affinity for the H1 and have built a couple with custom chassis on the TA01 as well as a 1/6 scale Summit Hummer, but the HG is just so accurate I can't pass it up.  Will probably try to sell one or two of my TA01 Hummers first since I really won't have much use for them.

That's everything I will definitely build, I'm sure other things will come up throughout the year.  I really would like to try and enjoy my trucks more.  I get out for a couple hours every weekend on the trails with my dad and we run our vintage Tamiyas at the local ballfield from time to time, but I pass up run time all too much for bench time.  I enjoy both equally but spend way more time building, need to even that out a bit.

This is a good thread, I needed this. (I have a feeling that I'll edit 10 times to add stuff. Edit: I'm noticing that I'm not remembering the plans...)

I should just close my eyes and jump into the 3D world... (but wouldn't I create more projects? I'm already overflowing with them...)

Mad Bison counter gear relocation: There is room above the chassis for the counter gear. It doesn't have to hang low. But 3D parts would have to be designed for the holes for the gear shafts. I need to learn to design 3D and printing.

Dancing Rider Trike: Stickering, LED-ing and paint the girl driver.

2CV: Stickering.

Alfa Romeo Giulia: Stickers

Vintage Wild Willy: Tires purchased, need to be installed.

Mad Bison: New tires needed

MF-01X, Rally Bug: Stickers

Sand Scorcher shell needs to be painted (but I forgot what it was for).

Build a Wild One out of all the parts collected over the years.

Build a Fast Attack Vehicle out of all the parts collected over the years.

Vintage (58044) style Mitsubishi Pajero: Stickers, add a clear windshield and interior, maybe a driver too.

Lunchbox: front suspension upgrade, body shell painting, stickers.

Midnight Pumpkin shell needs to be painted and stickered.

TLT-1: Center differential upgrade (can't even remember where the parts are)

Bronco shell for the stretched TLT-1 needs to be painted

Blazing Star shell for Manta Ray chassis.

Blackfoot Lexan shell needs to be painted.

Blackfoot re-re shell, paint and sticker

DB-01 shell needs to be painted. (Did I even buy a shell?)

ORV: Front suspension upgrade (can't remember where the parts are)

Rebuild a beat up ORV chassis. (can't remember if I bought a frog shell for it)

Rebuild a beat up Boomerang chassis.

XV-01: Only the body is painted so far.

Konghead: Shell color hasn't been decided, so paint and stickers remain.

Dynahead: NIB yet (I don't leave things in the box, so NIB is bothering me)

M07: NIB.  Honda S800 shell needs to be painted for M07, in egg-yellow which needs air-brushing.  Air compressor hasn't been touched in 10 years, so that needs to be set up.  I plan to build a sound proofing box for the air compressor.

Sand Rover: scratch-build a driver figure.

First annual here! Last year at this time I was still taking inventory of my old RC bins, and only one or two cars were in working order.

This year, everything is already driveable (achievement unlocked), so now it's down to the typical maintenance: tuning, cleaning, replacing/modifying broken parts, and possible occasional hopups.

Then there's paint and bodywork on them all too, which I've been mostly putting off while I work on the mechanical side of things. Maybe this is the year my Frog will finally get a body shell? We'll see

There's also a bunch of 4/5 NiMH cells to solder up into packs for speed runs.

I'd like to try to get a baseline GPS reading for all the cars at some point, just so I know where they all stand.

I'm also hoping I'll have more time (and better weather) for more postal racing more often.

Another goal is to get rid of Every.Last.Hobbywing.1060 from any car I'm going to use for racing or speed bashing. That limp mode is the worst. Hornet is getting a new ESC tomorrow, so there will be only one left to replace.

Lastly the Nikko Big Bubba. Needs a lot more tinkering before I can even think about dropping electronics in, but I'm really curious if I can make it drive halfway decent with a completely homebrew suspension setup.

I'm at the current max limit for the number of vehicles in my fleet (25).  May somehow sneak a King Hauler in there soon (wife says ..but i say ) otherwise, my future plans are more of the maintenance/improvement variety for my fleet:

- Replace bronze bushings for bearings on all brushed motors with adjustable timing

- Find good soft carbon brushes for all brushed motors

- Polish damper shafts using a cordless drill with automotive wax, replace O-rings with higher quality and use proper grease

- Try to source foam sponge washers to put on ball ends

I've got a project thread that lists all my outstanding stuff, but it's auto-generated by my CarManager database, which I have let slide into a state of non-maintenance due to being stacked on other software projects this year.  I might find time to get it in working order early next year, depending on how some other projects go.

Otherwise, I don't really know what 2022 will bring yet.  2021 was a great year once it got started, I went to loads of places and did loads of different things, but it was expensive, I spent way too much on hotels when I have a perfectly good camper (I just can't sleep in it when it's full of boxes, which kind of spoils the point) and way too much on fuel.  Rising fuel costs since the introduction of E10 fuel (I have to run the camper on E5 which has gone through the roof now) means I might have to cut right back on my road trips, which is a shame since I pretty much live for the road.  I can't really afford to replace the camper with anything better, but my wife is hoping to start driving it early next year so maybe once she'd written it off we'll get an old diesel Transit to convert, which will be ugly and slow and break down every week, but at least it'll be cheaper to drive (and half my mileage will be on the back of an AA loader anyway so my fuel bill will be halved further).

But I'm having something of a mid-life crisis, feeling personally bad that I haven't really focussed on making new music for a few years now and haven't ever found a way of playing the music I've written in a live setting.  Like DeadMau5, I pretty much "hit play".  So a couple of weeks ago I spent a bit of savings on some new music equipment, early next year I'll have to find the money for some new software once my trial runs out, and to get the best of it I'll have to give up at least some of my racing and workshop time to actually make and play music.  Fingers crossed the inspiration comes back.

I've still got tonnes of runners and projects, plus stuff I'm sure I've forgotten I've got.  I probably should pull all my stuff out the workshop when the weather improves next spring, go through everything and see what I'm happy to let go.

I'm still toying with the idea of setting up a regular local bash, and/or a semi-organised monster truck racing series, but that gives me even less time to commit to music and the workshop, so perhaps it's best to let that go.

Finances are also a bit questionable for the new year, we need to rebudget for 2022, I hope I don't have to give up any more personal funds but we have to be fair to each other and come up with a plan that makes everybody happy.

I'm also not happy with my job any more - since they closed the local office I have to drive over an hour through heavy traffic just to see people I don't know and don't work with.  My actual team are based 2 hours away, but they no longer have an office either, so if we want to work together we all have to commute to a different office - that's over 2 hours for me and an hour for most of them.  So, we don't bother.  So, I'm stuck at home 5 days a week and I've come to hate it so much more than I ever though I would.  So, maybe come January I'll start looking around for something else.  That may or may not result in a change to my disposable income and time, but will probably be the mix-up I need to kick start a new chapter of my life.

I think 2022 could be a good one, but could be different for me, so I'm not making too many solid RC plans just yet.

I thought I would post a quick update since it's been a couple of months.

FF03: Literally done, just need to bolt on the mirrors, scoop and wing. It's the JAS Motorsport Civic. I would like to add some of the TRF dampers whenever those become available again. Still not finished.

FF01: This was my New Beetle. I've added the 53155 damper set and purchased the Castrol Civic body set. I have not figured out where the boundary should be for the white and green. So, it's awaiting paint, etc. I also added a set of HPI wheels and Tamiya tires. Still needs paint.

RC10: I have a mostly complete RC10 team car. It needs wheels/tires and a body. I did buy the new JConcepts Protector body for it. Wheels/tires acquired. I had to update the CVDs to 3/16th drive which is fine because I have those but I don't have any axle roll pins. So I need to find those.

Super Avante: I ordered it back in July as my birthday present. Might be the first thing I work on. COMPLETE!

Engines are now clean and functional. OS CVX .15 in the RS4-2 needs new gaskets/seals. I have those in my parts stash.

Stuff added to the list:

RC10B6.3D: Merry Christmas! This is still in the box brand new.

Academy SB Sport: I have some updates to add to this car plus I need to find a new wing as it got mildly crushed during the move.

That's it for now. Oh, I did organize most of my parts/gear/etc...even shock spacers. I mean everything is threaded now, but it used to be all shock spacers. I have them all separated by brand. :D
